ROY in the AL is Justin Verlander
15 for 15 in saves
era, a miniscule 0.40
19 strike outs in 22.1 innings
not to mention doing it in one of the toughest places, pressure and media wise.
nice try though

Yes, the pressure of April and May must be crushing ::) .
Maybe that's the reason awards aren't given out in May!

Yeah IMO hes right behind pedro. Pedro should be 7-0 if it wasnt for wagner and a game where he had no run support

I realize that you are a Bosox homer, and I will admit that I am a Tigers homer. But Verlander is on pace for 22 wins. I realize that a quarter of the way through the season doesn't mean much; but if Verlander gets 20 wins in the AL as a rookie, he would win the ROY by a landslide (depending on if Kazmir still qualifies as a rookie). Nice try though

Ok hes on pace for 22 wins, papelbon is on pace for 60 saves(15 through 1/4 of the season). Lets say papelbon breaks the rookie record for saves(37 held by Kazuhiro Sasaki)
Rookies have won 20 games a lot more than rookies saving that many games.

AL
MVP: Hafner/Thome
Cy: Kazmir/Kenny Rogers
Roy: Verlander/Papelbon
NL
MVP: Pujols (This might be unanimous-they should just give it to him now)
Cy: Pedro/Webb/Oswalt
ROy: Hanley Ramirez

I agree that winning 20 games is more common than getting 60 saves, but how many rookies have won 20 and not been ROY? If Papelbon gets 60 saves and Verlander gets 20+wins, then it will definetely be a 2 horse race. Kazmir doesn't quality anymore, correct?

Agreed...In one of my money leauges I have Webb, Kazmir and Verlander in my starting roto...I've gotten lucky on those guys coming through like they have. My only disappointment has been Felix Hernandez.

Speaking of Kazmir....It is now official that the Kazmir for Zambrano is the dumbest trade in the history of sports. At the time it was made I thought it was the dumbest trade I had ever seen but after the start to this season it is now official.

The Giants made a worse trade when they sent Joe Nathan and Francisco Liriano to Minnesota for A.J. Pierzynski. Liriano is basically Santana Jr. With all the dynamite young pitchers in the majors right now, he may well have the nastiest stuff.

I've been praying they would put him in the rotation. They only have three SP with ERAs over 7.00 right now.

What made the Kazmir trade so stupid is you didn't just give up what many thought was the top young arm in the game in exchange for immediate contribution but he was already able to contribute more at that time in a playoff run than Zambrano. Zambrano was a proven 4.00+ ERA guy with no upside and Kazmir was ready to be thrown into a big league rotation at the time of the trade. A lot of bad trades get made where teams give up a lot more in future value in exchange for immediate contribution to try and make a post season run but this was a deal where he was already able to contribute at a higher level at the time of the deal. I can't imagine how good my Mets would be right now if Kazmir was in that rotation along with Pedro and Glavine.

Unbelievable how long they waited to make that move considering they had the worst starting rotation in baseball.

That'd make it Thome, Kazmir and Papelbon in the AL, and Pujols, Oswalt and Hanley Ramirez in the NL......that's got to be the most popular way you can think of.....I think the AL those three are clearly way ahead of everyone.....

There is a reason why Steve Phillips is on ESPN and not calling the shots for a MLB team. At the time of that trade every Met fan I knew including myself were besides themselves. There is still a lot of talk around here that Al Leiter gave word to the Mets front office that Kazmir would never cut it in the big leagues.

The Twins also acquired hard throwing right hander Boof Bonser. Bonser surrendered only 1 ER and struck out 8 in his 6 inning major league debut on Sunday. At the time of the trade, Bonser was considered a better prospect than Liriano

Being a Mets fan has made my memory crap over the last 20 years. It was Jim Duquette that made the Kazmir - Zambrano trade. I remember Duquette more for passing up on Vlad Guerrerro when he was available.

I'm glad to get this clarified cause for some reason I had it in my head that it was Minya that made that deal in his first year on the job. My opinion of him just moved up a bunch if it was Duquette's dumb ass that made the move. The real crapper about that is the Mets were approached early in the season on a handful of deals and the deal breaker every time on some decent trades was Kazmir. The Mets said he was untouchable and then a few months later the damn near gave him away.

"Omar Minaya is currently the general manager of the New York Mets, a position he took in September 2004."
That is probably no coincidence that he was hired in September 04 when the Kazmir/Zambrano deal went down in July 04.

Jim Duquette pulled the trigger on the Zambrano-Kazmir trade because he knew he was a lame duck general manager if the Mets didn't make the playoffs in 2004.
Mets should have just canned his ass. An underacheving team should not delay the inevitable if management is imcompetent. The 2004 season was already a lost cause at the time.

==HOMER ALERT==
Any discussion of the Cy Young or who is the best pitcher in the AL without mentioning Johan Santana proves the lack of knowledge of the American League here.
The guy has stuggled slightly with spot pitches, but he has the best stuff of any pitcher in baseball and 75 strike outs already-AND HE'S JUST SETTLING DOWN. There is no pitcher in baseball who has the hitters walking back to the dugout shaking their heads more often than Santana and he's only 24 years old. Santana is the best in baseball.

When you have half the W's and a full point + higher ERA than some other guys it tends to take you out of the disussion. When the full season plays out I would expect him to be right there in the mix but he right now he needs Kaz to have the wheels to fall off (which is certainly possible) or he needs to really heat up to get into the mix for this year.

No doubt, the Twins need to get their collective act together and help him out. It has to be frustrating watching the defense crumble behind you when balls that a good 3rd baseman or shortstop would field go right by your guys-and they don't even get errors. Not making excuses for Santana because he hasn't been quite as sharp as last season yet, but he hasn't lost any of his skills, he needs to just settle down and the Twins need to sharpen their defense and help the guy out.
