View Full Version : JJ's comments on Lelie.

This is what JJ said about Ash's situation in a local newspaper interview. Very interesting.

On former UH wide receiver Ashley Lelie, who did not participate in the Denver Broncos' mini-camp and is seeking a trade:

"I'm disappointed in Ashley. I tried to call him. ... I'm disappointed because he didn't return my calls.

"In the business now, the system has changed, and when you hold out, you can never regain that money. (At the end of this) year he was going to become a free agent. He really had a chance to realize what the system could do for him. ... Reading the paper, and talking to people who know him, he said he's going to sit out, which tells me he doesn't know the deal. If you sit out, they don't have to pay you, and they've still got you (under contract) for another year. The year doesn't go away."

On what Lelie should have done:

"If he wanted to get traded, there was a way to get traded, but it's not by holding out. The way to get traded is to go in and do everything that they want you to do. You go in and work out. You do everything all the way up to the first game, then say, 'I've fulfilled my part of it. I don't want to be here. Can you trade me?' He thought he would get traded before the draft. I was trying to tell him they're not going to trade him. And guess what? They didn't trade him. I didn't talk to anyone, but I knew how they were going to do it. They were upset he didn't come in during the workouts. So now it gets to be a personal thing. What did they do? They signed Javon Walker to $40 million. ... Had he gone in, they might not have traded for Walker. That $40 million might have been his next year. He'll be playing for less money (next year) than he's making now."

Yes Ludo he was Lelie's coach and mentor who he respects. This morning I copied Jone's remarks from the Honolulu Advertizer and sent 'em to Lelie's web site just in case he reads those emails and told him not to bother coming back to Hawaii if he holds out.

If he gets traded fine, but if not he's got to do the right thing for everyone else including himself and get into camp.

I really dont care at this point. There is a lot of young talent behind him waiting for their opportunity. Lelie has burned his bridge as far as im concerned and i hope he sits this year so he will still be under contract. Teach him a lesson of humility.

Told him not to come back to Hawaii? I thought he was your boy?

And as of now, it doesnt sound much like he 'respect' JJ much anymore?
Who is is agent now btw? They are telling him wrong info!

Hi Ludo,

I've been behind Ahs the football palyer all along and still am. But not Ash the moron if he persists in slittign his own throat and hurting us in the process.

I'm totally sympathetic to his tough situation here in Denver with this version of the Broncos of the past couple of years, but his best bet now is to bite the bullet and do the best he can for one more year and then go where ever he wants.

He can come back to Hawaii of course but if he expects the prior fan support he got he's in for a let down if he holds out.

Hi Hula,

Thank you for not getting into a 5 paragraph essay on Lelie.

I hope Ash comes back.

What Ash is hoping to happen only he knows. I'm very curious to hear who he talked with regarding his desire to hold out. Very bad advice if any. Too bad he didn't speak with June Jones. He would/could have set him straight. More and more it sounds like he's ruining his pro career by doing it the wrong way.

Who knew that Jermain Jackson was more than just a backup singer/dancer/whipping boy for Joseph Jackson...or are we talking about Joseph Jackson? Janet Jackson?

I didn't know that they were a football family.

JJ is dead. But If he were alive, I'm sure he would hold Ashley's feet to the fire... If you don't like the contract - don't sign it. If you do sign it, and take the money - be a man, honor your word and don't be a puss. Your next employer is watching.

We probably should have drafted Julius Jones, but that doesn't give him any right to tell Ashley what to do with his career.

Lelie is stupid. Even if he wanted out, and the team wouldn't trade him. . atleast play this year and get your money.

Seriously, if Jones can't talk some sense into this fool noone can. I have been thru this and even tried to look thru his eyes, and it just doesn't make sense. Forget the Broncos, it's like Hari Kari. He's falling on his own sword! He can't compete against a 36 year old and a vet that can't even cut yet off an ACL? WTF is he thinking. The fact is this was a golden opportunity to grab the spotlight. Put down the stupid pills.

The amazing thing is that we have a young stud in the wings that will be able to hit recievers in stride deep in a couple years.

There just isn't upside to this for him. Jones said exactly what I did...we might of not traded for Walker if Lelie wasn't pouting in the first place. Just because we inquired about T.O. isn't like we were committing adultery or something. If Lelie is scared of competition, he's in the wrong job field. Good Riddance. Hopefully Jones can talk some sense into him. It's baffling. Did Greasy Al hypnotize him or something?
