CB Middlebrooks returns to Broncos

May 18, 2006

DENVER (AP) -- Cornerback Willie Middlebrooks signed a one-year deal with the Denver Broncos on Thursday after a brief stint with the San Francisco 49ers.

The Broncos drafted Middlebrooks in the first round in 2001. He played four seasons in Denver before he was traded to the 49ers in 2005. He appeared in five games in San Francisco in three separate stints and was waived for the fourth and final time in December.

In February, Middlebrooks pleaded guilty to misdemeanor assault in the south Denver suburb of Littleton and received an 18-month deferred jail sentence and was ordered to complete nine months of domestic violence classes. He was accused of assaulting a female friend in her home after an argument.

In 56 regular-season games, Middlebrooks has 23 tackles, one sack, 12 pass breakups and one fumble recovery. He has 41 tackles on special teams in regular-season games and one defensive tackle in one postseason appearance.

A great role player huh?

If you consider a great role player somebody who is completely ineffective in pass rush (his biggest asset apparently) and their stats last year were 15 tackles and 0 sacks then sure...he is a great role player. Not to mention he was inactive for 8 games.

Just because he played for VT doesn't mean you have to suck him clean.

Willie was definitely one of the team's premier special teams guys. Happy to see him back. He's no starting corner, but it's nice to have a backup corner/safety who is a great gunner on special teams, knows the system and plays for the veteran's minimum without any pretensions of something better.

<TABLE cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=0 width="100%" border=0><TBODY><TR><TD colSpan=2>BRONCOS SIGN CB MIDDLEBROOKS AND P WILLIAMS

</TD></TR><TR><TD colSpan=2>ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — The Denver Broncos on Thursday signed cornerback Willie Middlebrooks to a one-year deal and signed former Adams State College (Alamosa, Colo.) punter Jeff Williams as a rookie free agent, Head Coach Mike Shanahan announced. As per club policy, financial terms of the deals were not disclosed.
Middlebrooks (6-foot-1, 200 pounds) is entering his sixth NFL season and fifth year with the Broncos, who selected him in the first round (24th overall) of the 2001 NFL Draft. Middlebrooks played his first four professional seasons with Denver before the club traded him to San Francisco on July 15 in exchange for defensive end John Engelberger.
In 56 career regular-season games (2 starts), Middlebrooks has totaled 23 tackles (22 solo), one sack (3 yds.), 12 pass breakups and one fumble recovery. He also has recorded 41 tackles on special teams in regular-season play and made one defensive tackle in his lone postseason appearance.
Middlebrooks played five games with the 49ers in 2005 in three stints with the club during the regular season after he was waived by San Francisco at the end of the preseason. He finished the year with three tackles, one pass breakup and two special-teams stops.
From 2002-04, Middlebrooks totaled 39 tackles on special teams with the Broncos. He started the first two games of his career in 2004, playing in 12 contests that season en route to recording personal bests in tackles (17) and pass breakups (10) while adding one sack (3 yds.).
Middlebrooks was a three-year starter and first-team All-Big Ten Conference selection in 2000 at the University of Minnesota, where he played 30 career games (26 starts). A first-team Class 6A all-state selection as a senior at Homestead High School in Homestead, Fla., Willie Frank Middlebrooks was born Feb. 12, 1979, in Miami.
Williams (6-foot-4, 215 pounds) set an NCAA Division II record for career punting average with a 44.9-yard average on 240 punts at Adams State College in Alamosa, Colo. He received a total of 11 first-team All-America honors from various outlets in his final two years at Adams State and led NCAA Division II in punting average during each of those seasons. A four-time first-team All-Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference choice, Williams recorded 80 career punts of 50 or more yards and 22 career punts of 60 or more yards. Williams, who also competed in the high jump event on ASC’s track and field team, lettered in football, tennis, track and basketball at Skyline High School in Longmont, Colo. He was born March 26, 1983.

Always good to have a few gunners on special teams. I used to fault Shanny for not developing that in the past, and for a few seasons our special teams were a painful weakness. I think Shanny is more comfortable now keeping a few guys around bascially for ST without much hope for on field contribution.

I have Middlebrooks ahead of Shoate, Rogers, Browner and battling Paymah. Browner shows potential even if Middlebrooks is better he sticks. Paymah has to play or pack. Middlebrooks is the better special teamer and at this point my question about depth is answered. Good pickup.

Engleberger is in a field of (8) DE. Vaughn, Gause, Ekuban, Engelberger, Dumervil, Brown, and Jackson. Dumervil is 5'11. Jackson is 6'8. Everyone else is around 6'4. It's pretty interesting to see the Broncos aren't trying to bring in something to suppliment their 6 really small DT. Looks like they are going to put the whole Offensive line on Warren's back.

Warren got there before Pryce a lot. I'm wondering what they really are going to do with Warren.

Forget about Walker or Cutler this is biggest offseason move for our team and possibly any team in the NFL. Maybe we can trade him and Lelie to SF for a 6th or we can trade him and Lelie to the Skins for a 2nd and Brandon Llyod Hilarious!

But in all seriousness when you think about its not a bad signing he does know the system and provides depth and god forbid Williams and Foxworth have a sophomore slump.

Denver's superbowl corners...

21 - Darrien Gordon great return man when he got his hands on the ball. Better still when he had to beat two or three guys after and INT. Gambler, not a great cover guy.

39 - Ray Crockett...great press or mystique or something. Every time he got beat he reached for his hammy. Couldn't help even the chiefs defense.

I don't think Denver's success had a lot to do with either of those guys. I think it was the fab. five on offense that made them winners. They were at best mediocre on defense. When you get a couple of stops and the opposition can't stop you = victory.

Could Walls or Middlebrooks have done as well as Crockett?? Probably. Even I could get beat routinely and grab my hammy.

i wonder that as well, there was a very noticable difference when Slowik came on board, the DB's seems to actually want to be physical & play hard after Gibbs got canned

if Willie is healthy he might be able finally break through, obviously he won't be a top 3 CB but he could serve a Sam Brandon type role & add depth, especially on ST

05-18-2006, 08:11 PM
This is can't lose. If he doesn't make the roster and we have a rash of injuries, he can be taken off the street again familiar with whatever tweaks have happened...He knows the system. He made the rounds so I doubt if we cut him he would get picked up. As others have said, he seemed to be playing better in 04. Willie should be coming into his prime if he can stay off the injury list. He will be usefull in keeping young WR's worst case, and he might just surprise.

I just looked up Browner, and he's Lenny Walls all over again .... An undrafted free agent CB who stands 6'4" ... Eeeeeeek!

willie has the talent, maybe this time around he sticks.......

1 thing is for sure, the best CB's will be on the team.

But here is the kicker:

He will play safety, can move his hips, and likes to hit people!!

DENVER — Cornerback Willie Middlebrooks (http://fantasyfootball.usatoday.com/content/player.asp?sport=NFL&id=1948) is getting a second chance at winning over football fans who soured on him for his transgressions, both on and off the field.
The Broncos' former first-round draft pick who never lived up to his billing in Denver signed a one-year deal with his old team Thursday after a brief stint with the San Francisco 49ers.
The Broncos drafted Middlebrooks in 2001. He played four seasons in Denver before he was traded to the 49ers in 2005. He appeared in five games in San Francisco in three separate stints and was waived for the fourth and final time in December.
In February, Middlebrooks pleaded guilty to misdemeanor assault of a female friend in the Denver suburb of Littleton. He received an 18-month deferred jail sentence and was ordered to complete nine months of domestic-violence classes.
"The second time around, I hate to say it's personal, but it is personal for me, not to any coaches or anybody. But it's just something personal that I've got to prove. That's how I feel," Middlebrooks said after participating in the team's passing camp Thursday.
What is he out to prove his second time through?
"Just that I'm a solid football player and belong in this league. And just wipe every doubt that coaches or teams, even fans, had about me," Middlebrooks said. "Just get that erased out of their minds."
In 56 regular-season games, Middlebrooks has 23 tackles, one sack, 12 pass breakups and one fumble recovery. He has 41 tackles on special teams in regular-season games and one defensive tackle in one postseason appearance.
Middlebrooks left after the Broncos drafted three cornerbacks last year: Darrent Williams (http://fantasyfootball.usatoday.com/content/player.asp?sport=NFL&id=3198), Karl Paymah (http://fantasyfootball.usatoday.com/content/player.asp?sport=NFL&id=3288) and Domonique Foxworth (http://fantasyfootball.usatoday.com/content/player.asp?sport=NFL&id=3303). With so much talent at that position, Middlebrooks said he's willing to shift to safety. Either way, he hopes to make his mark again on special teams.
His comeback, he said, will be smoother because he's already familiar with the team and the town.
"After the trade, I actually put my house on the market," Middlebrooks said. "Thank God it didn't sell. I walked right back in and got in my own bed."
Middlebrooks said his court case definitely hurt his image around the league.
"A lot of teams I talked to, they kind of frowned at it," he said. "I think it affected me mentally, just playing and going through court. That stuff is behind me."
Maybe not. If Middlebrooks makes the team, he could still face punishment from the commissioner.
"I'll cross that bridge when I get there," Middlebrooks said. "I can't look and say what if this happens and keep staring down stuff that's not certain right now."

It's a good safe signing. He is really good special teamer and let's face it Denver could have used him last year in the AFC Championship game. Of course that was last year. He probably won't make the team unless somehow he can beat out Cox. I always thought Middlebrooks would make a better safety.

I don't know if this guy counts in any of the camp battles but I'm sure looking forward to the reports.

What a bust this guy was. He's even featured on one of fireshanahan.com's draft retrospectives! 8')

I still remember when I had a signature bet over how many interceptions he would make. I forget who it was, but some moron here was a total homer for Middlebrooks. That bet was easy money.

You wish I'd hump your leg, tank ass. Sorry, even if I were gay, I know I could do better than you.

Always nice to be reminded how easy it is to get under your skin though.

That reminds me of the thread he started over there awhile ago entitled "I like cleanliness, showtunes and Barry Manilow, what am I?"

Edit:
here is the thread, its pretty funny. http://www.chiefsplanet.com/BB/showthread.php?t=115582&page=1&pp=15&highlight=showtunes

I did get the title wrong as Bob unsuccessfully tried to qualify the possible answers.

I found it amusing that Bob posted all of the following in addition to the above in the thread:

Walks in the park are cool.

I've had a man crush on every Chiefs QB since Montana.

I might add I watched Legally Blonde 2: Red, White and Blonde last night. I and enjoyed
EVERY MINUTE OF IT.

(In response to a post questioning whether Bob really liked Barry Manilow songs) Fake? I'm dead serious about the Barry Manilow. BANDSTAAAAAAAAAND!

Somebody is going to have to put up a website about that guy. The more I learn the more I just shake my head.

I wonder if somebody can get him to swing around a "light saber" or something. Maybe make some money on this deal.
