Matt Hughes is just so dominate and so much younger... also he is ruthless, he won't let up or take it easy on Royce.
When Royce was dominate not many people understood the intricacies of B-Ju-Jitsu which isn't the case anymore.

Seriously, I think Matt will win but he's going to have to lay and pray the whole time to avoid being subbed by Royce

While it may not be 2 of the best fighters around I am also looking forward to the Shmarock/Ortiz rematch.....2 guys who want to beat on eachother, and not just for the money. I just hope it last longer than the last 1.

Hughes beat Carlos Newton who is an excellent BJJer twice.
Bj Penn back then was on another level and he would destroy Penn.
Unless Royce really punishes Hughes, Hughes will power out of most of Royce's sub.

The record you posted for gracie is inaccurate.. He is 13-2-3
As somone mentioned above Royce was able to dominate during the early years of MMA where hardly anyone trained more then one art and hardly knew about BJJ and how to defend agianst it.. But this is a new age where everyone cross-trains if they want to be successfull...
MMA as a sport has grown leaps in bounds since the early days when Royce dominated in it and it had no weight classes. I just dont see how he can beat an all around champ like Hughes. Even though I hate Hughes since he is a ass clown and very disrespectfull to his fans (well the ones without boobs).. I just dont see him losing this fight.. Expecially if you have seen any of Royce Gracies recent fights in Japan.

I think Gracie will have his hands full, but saying that Hughes will power out of his subs is laughable. If Gracie locks one in NOBODY is powering out of it! The one thing that nobody has mentioned about Gracie, and this goes for all Gracies... they are as tough as they come. They will go until the end. I've seen Gracie's almost have their arms ripped off and not tap out. Refs will stop their fights before they give up and Royce is the king of that name.
As for UFC coming a long way... for sure. All MMA has come a long way, but Pride Fighting is still my favorite. I like some of the personalities in the UFC. Forrest and Rich Franklin are two of my favorites. I loathe the H.Beach Bum. I'll give him credit though, he is a phenomenal warrior on the mat and brings it every match. I like Tim Silvia as well. Anybody that can have their arm snapped and want to continue fighting is a bad ass in my book. When Franky snapped his twig I had to look away. That had to hurt and Silvia was sitting their pumping that same arm, saying "I'm Good, lets fight!" Besides all that it's fun to watch the guys that can really floor you with one punch. UFC pisses me off when the match up two Graplers on main events. Matt Hughes is well rounded so hopefully it will be an entertaining fight, but it has the potential to be 3 rounds of boring lying on the ground. Watch Pride Fighting a couple times and you'll be very impressed with the differences. 10 minute first round. 5 minute 2nd and 3rd. The refs will stand those boys up in a heartbeat if they're just lying on one and other. Simply put, Chuck Liddell was owned in Pride Fighting. BJ Penn was/is just another fighter in Pride Fighting. Big difference in the two, but Pride is world wide while UFC is domestic.

Dickhead bump... nice description, could have gone without the visual that's stuck in my head now though.
Watch Pride, it's quite a bit better. While "bumping their units" if they're not punching or punishing they get stood up and ordered to fight. With a 10 minute round those boys get tired and actually fight for survival, which leads to more knockouts. I wouldn't recommend it if all they did was lay on each other for 20 minutes per match. They fight!

Slap, you have a clear bias for boxing and against MMA. That's fine. But you constantly refer to MMA fighters as "schoolyard headlockers" and ******s, ignoring the obvious hard work it takes to master both submission and stand-up fighting (not to mention the cajones it takes to get in the ring without 16 oz. pillows strapped to your fist).
So do you have some boyhood issues that need resolving or what?

To clarify, I never called any of those guys gay. I said putting headlocks on people is gay. Putting a headlock on someone and then grabbing a fistful of your gi, which basically describes Hoyce's entire career, is Ultimate Gayness.
Not like guys who get all excited about UFC are ripe for satire, though.

I've just been getting interested in MMA about the last year and I think it has already leaped boxing for me. Thanks for helping to bring a good sport down King.

I agree, same the other way.
I have been attending UFC fights for the past 3 years in Vegas and just last month in Anahiem and let me tell you it is electricity filled in the arena. MMA fighters are far better athletes and fighters than one dementional boxers. You have to think about a couple things in this bout. Gracie is fighting 15 lbs heavier than Hughes. In common opponents Gracie submitted a younger and much larger Ken Shamrock in less than a minute (UFC1) I think it was. Gracie has fought much bigger fighters than himself or anyone that Matt hughes has fought. I talked to Matt last month for a minute and yes he is in great shape, But the old comments are BS when it comes to this type of fighting....see Randy Coture (sp) Both fighters are submission specialists, but I just remember Gracie during his run in the UFC fighting guys in the mid 200's and kicking everyone of their butts. He even submitted a much larger and stronger Kimo. I do not know how Royce will lose this fight unless Matt gets a clean shot on Gracie's chin then gets him on the ground and submits him before the cobwebs clear out.
I say Gracie by submission middle of round 2. Hopefully my best buds son will not go with him and I am next in line to join him.
I forgot my take on Slap's headlock comments.... They are not headlocks they are using, It is called a bare naked choke, which the person in the submission hold can get no air and will either tap out or will be put to sleep.... Not gay anyway you look at it.

I'd love to see the legend of Gracie win it, but he's just over the hill. Hughes is at the top of his game and is gonna bulldoze Gracie. He'll either ground 'n pound Gracie or submit him. Too strong, too fast, and has been fighting more recently.

In the Old UFC there were no weight classes of course. I do think that Royce can win this one, but Hughes is also not the best fighter out there right now. I don't know that I've seen anyone in Pride or UFC who is as good as Andre Orlovsky.
As for Royce's toughness, go back and watch his early fight against Kimo, where Kimo breaks Royce's arm but Gracie still pulls out a victory.

One thing to consider, when Gracie was dominating the sport it was still growing and very few of the fighters could afford to train like they do now. Almost all of them had other jobs. The sport has evolved since then and the fighters are alot more well rounded. I think Matt has everything to lose in this fight and little to gain. Gracie could easily catch Matt in a submission but if Matt can keep it standing I think Matt knocks him out. Either way this is a publicity stunt in my eyes more than it is anything else.
I think it was Oskie who who posted earlier about BJ Penn and Chuck in Pride. BJ is one of the best fighters in any MMA venue. Chuck got his ass kicked by Rampage but I think it would be a different story if they fought again. I think if Penn gets another shot at Hughes he beats him. Pride pays bigger purses so logic would dictate they would have a little better talent. But having said that, if Pride is pushing The New York Douche Bag Phil Barone as something special that hurts their credibility in my book, he was run out of the UFC with his tail between his legs.

I know the PPV for UFC used to be $34.95 and now UFC 60 is $44.95. I think both organizations have there gems and both have some knuckleheads. Yeah, I think it was that last takedown that sealed the deal for Ortiz.

i think tito won if you look at the points breakdown
10 - 8 tito ... he owned forrest in the first round, standing and on the ground
10 - 9 forrest ... started to take the fight to tito and avoided the takedown
10 - 10 tie ..... forrest started really strong but like you said tito got a good takedown and got some pounding in to even the round so....
29 - 28 tito.... i guess, but tito was just about done and forrest was pressing the action 1 more round and tito would have taken it
IMO dana white is the new don king he wanted forrest to win more because he has alot invested in him (ult fighter 2 show) and a 4 fight contract.
you know dana wants to see forrest vs. chuck but now forrest took a step back in contention, so.... now forrest will need to fight a least 1 more good fight then if tito wins vs. shamrock (who he should beat easily) it will be a rematch for the #1 contender spot
ohh and their is no way that fight was 30-27 forrest ...wayyyy to lopsided

mirko crocop, wanderlei silva "axe muderer", sakuraba, and chuck iceman are prolly the best fighters in MMA right now.

You are correct sir but did you watch the fight? Penn owned St. Pierre in the first round. I've never seen anyone yet that has come close to dominating st. pierre until that fight. He had no answer in that first round. The rest of the fight was kind of ho hum. St. Pierre was very lucky to come away with that decision.
actually i did watch it and it wasnt quite what i expected. I was hoping BJ dominated st. pierre. could of gone either way imo.

I think he is back now for a couple fights. He left because of Dana.....dont really know the whole story. I've seen him fight in pride I think and in K-1 before this fight. He fought one of the gracie's and beat his ass pretty bad. I think when focused he is one of the best fighters in the world if not the best.

Boxing isn't what it used to be, but it isn't dying. The heavy weights suck, but all the other division are doing well. The mega fights still bring in a boat load of money. And there are some pretty good fights coming up. Sucks that none of them are from the heavy weight division.

http://www.mmanews.com/article/149202276.php
It looks like they double your purse if you win, and some major fighters even get a % of the gate. Also I wouldn't be surprised if there are extra bonuses for not letting fights go to decision.
a bit of info on what type of money some of theses fighters make
from an interview with matt hughes:
JF: What are you guys making for this fight?
MH: Royce is making $1.3 million. I'm getting nowhere close to that.
Just thought i bump this back to page one for fight night!! I look for gracie to win. I am a bit bummed to find out it's a three round non title fight though!
seems like a fight this big they would put the belt up, it may have something to do with Gracies K1 contract. The UFC contract is only for this one fight and it had to be worked out with K1

Edit: Recap - fight was around 3 minutes, did a little boxing, went to the ground and Matt tried an arm bar, but gracie would not tap out, and it looked painful! Gracie rolled onto his stomach and Matt was pounding the living daylights outa him! Ref called the fight, Gracie was unable to defend himself and Matt coulda killed him if he wanted.

If you saw the look on Gracie's face during the arm bar you KNEW he wouldn't tap... He was way to proud to tap after all the build up. He was ready to have his arm broken before he would quit.
The Diego fight was also very entertaining. Diego didn't touch the mat the last half of the 3rd round, and it was still a great fight. I thought Alessio was going to get an arm bar working on the side of his head to win the fight for a while.

The guy with the beast logo is Bob Sapp.Bob Sapp is known as "The Beast." Contrary to popular belief, Bob Sapp is not related to Oakland Raiders defensive tackle Warren Sapp. Sapp began his athletic career in college football as a standout offensive lineman for the University of Washington, where he won the Morris Award. Expected by some to get high notice from pro scouts in the 1997 NFL draft, he slipped to the third round before being chosen by the Chicago Bears at 69th overall. Although Sapp was under pro contract for the next four seasons (with four different teams, each of which cut him within that season), he appeared in only one regular season game before failing a mandatory NFL steroids test and washing out of the league.
No the number one guy is a russian guy. Cro Cop is probably the third in the sport behind the russian and a brazilian guy.
The Brazilian(He beat Crocop by submission. The clip where Cro cops gets subbed is blurred by special effects so you'll have to look close) is number 2

No problem Big Nog(the Brazilian) and Crocop have beaten Bob Sapp although Bob was literally destroying Nog until he got tired from beating him up. Then Nog just submitted him. Nog was viewed as unbeatable after beating up a guy who had 100+ pounds on him until Fedor(the Russian) came along and gave him a beating twice.
To be honest though, the competitions gets better as the weight class goes down since the smaller athletes tend to look for a sport with weight classes.
By the way, that punch Crocop gave to Sapp broke Sapp's orbital bone and that's why Sapp looked like he wanted to cry.

Like who? He's been the champion in his weight class for some time. I don't know how Ricardo Arona beat him but he evenged that loss in his last fight. Quinton Jackson won't fight him again after getting destroyed in Pride 28 and Sacuraba can't beat him. I would like to see a rematch with Cro-Cop as they fought to a draw but Mirco out weighs him by 15-20 pounds. Silva has almost perfected his art (chute boxe) IMO. I never really thought of him as a rope grabber.

I've seen practically every Silva fights in Pride.
Silva is probably the head figure of rope grabbing. You even see it in that HL of that you posted against Dan Henderson. He even headbutted Guy Mezger during his fight.
Saku, Dan and Kondo are welterweights(by pride standards) at best. He faught smaller japanese fighters who didn't even deserve to be in the ring with him.
He faught Hunt and Crocop when they were absolute noobs in MMA. And he got a draw and a loss from that.
By the way, Silva is pretty big. During his fight with Crocop he was 217 while Crocop was 220. He cuts a good amount of weight to get 205.
He lost to Arona where he was on his back most of the time avoiding to get pounded first time and barely won a split decision the second time around.
He's been the Champ for about 4-5 years now. He's lucky that Shogun is his teammate.
Fighters that will give him a run for his money: Overeem, Igor, Lil Nog, SHogun, Arona, Randlemen. Hell any good wrestler will do. Silva always had trouble against good wrestlers.

Seems to me they are trying to push him up for a big fight against St. Pierre/Hughes/Penn or someone elite. He lost that fight in my eyes and apparently everyone elses at the Staple Center from the sound of there boos.

I decided to contribute a bit to this thread so here's a different highlight video of the best hw in the world today, Fedor Emelianenko. Enjoy.

Thanks for that (edit: but your second link doesn't work unless you cut and paste the text.) Kid Yamamoto is awesome . I wish UFC had a good LW division like Pride and K1.

No doubt, UFC 60 went a long way toward establishing some good LW fighters, and with BJ Penn coming down to 155 it should be sick. I wonder how they're going to figure who gets the vacated belt...a Bushido/Grand Prix-style tournament would be awesome (but they'll probably just pick two dudes and name them top contenders).

Penn has no real intention of coming back to LW. He said while ago that he doesn't think he can make the weight anymore since he bulked up so much. He wants to get the WW belt then go for the MW belt.

yup. the only thing diego did was be the aggressor the entire fight, but my argument is that nothing he did even came close to hurting alessio, even in a minor way. he never even came close to taking alessio down. i'da given alessio points simply for avoiding the takedowns. and granted, a lot of alessio's hits were jabs or glancing blows, but at least he opened a cut on diego.
no way in HELL that diego won all three rounds like that judge says. you gotta think tho, diego is UFC's new golden boy with the undefeated record and got crowned the ultimate fighter... they're prepping him for a title fight and there was no way in hell the judges were gonna give this alessio guy the decision, a first loss for diego, no matter how much he earned it. see this kinda crap in boxing all the time.

They are prepping him for a beatdown in my eyes. He's got an unbelievable ground game but his stand up game sucks. That will get him trashed if he fights some of the top welterweights.

Did anyone else think that Diego should have lost that fight? I thought it was close but I did'nt think Diego did enough to win.
Actually I thought Diego won outright, It seemed to me that Alessio’s gameplan was not to go to the ground. But he wasn’t doing anything. Do you give him points for just standing up? Most of his punches were deflected by Diego.
Diego was the more active fighter, at least he was trying to make it fight and not a dancing contest like Alessio was trying to make it.
I think the fight between Spencher Fisher and Matt Wilman was the best fight of the night, that flying knee kick was awesome.

nice animated .gifs, man. that first one of melving guillard knocking out rick davis - imagine what had happened if he had connected on the second shot, which missed simply because the first one dropped davis? totally woulda hurt. that guillard kid, how much did they say he was? 155 lbs? that's gotta be the most muscle i've seen on a 155 pounder. how much did he have to drop to make weight? this guy could be a beast in years to come.

Not sure, but he is pretty shredded. Wouldn't say he's big. But I'm sure he cuts a decent amount of weight since he used to be a WW on the TUF show.

It was the case like that with Gomi vs Azeredo. He lands one that probably knocked out Az and Gomi another shot while Az is going down.

Every judge awards points differently. I think Alessio's jab was wicked, it cut diego good. He didnt throw his hands like I expected and i think if he did diego would have lost outright. I just dont think you can reward a fighter that is and ineffective agressor. Diego came at him the whole fight but failed at every takedown. His standup sucked. The end of the fight he looked good but that was way to late in my eyes. I like diego I was just very dissapointed, he looked very one dimensional.

This stuff has too much of a pro wrestling edge for me.
I will try to check out this fight, but the ads look like Vince Mcmahon has a hand in these, leagues or federations, or what ever they are called.
dont be angry cause your sport is dying.......... you know this is nothing like wwf
