to help them grow faster (not that aspens really need any help) place a small tree fertilizer stick in the bottom of each hole. Aspens do grow fast and die out quick. Aspens are mother natures way of replenishing a burned off forest.

Thanks much. They came in a little burlap bag ball thingy. Should I just stick it in the ground or unwrap the burlap???

leave it on it will rot off in about a week being buried like it will be. Oh yeah, if you use a Jacobs fertilizer stick about 1/4 of one for each tree will be plenty. Unless, they are over 5 ft. tall then about 1/2 a stick per tree.
Have the boss plant them hotrod!! :wiggle: ;D

Make sure that bag is common burlap. It could be comprised of a plastic burlap. Its important for the roots to contact the soil and some of those bags with plastic won't biodegrade quickly enough. Just try not to damage the rootball. Cut loose the tie around the trunk and place the tree in the hole. Loosen the burlap and make a couple slices down the side of the material. Then you should be able to slide all or most of the bag out of the hole.
Don't let the roots dry out. A newly planted tree in warm weather should be watered every day with several gallons of water. Take a hose and set it at the base and let it run on low for an hour.
The other thing I recommend you do is make sure you have good drainage. After you dig the hole for the tree, fill it all the way to the top with water. It should drain completely in less than an hour. If it doesn't, I recommend you dig the hole deeper and put some sand at the bottom before replacing some of the original soil. Test the drainage again and see if its any better. Bad drainage can lead to root rot.
Good luck. You're picking a great time of year to plant so you should do just fine.

One tip ... for any tree. If you have really hard soil, you'll be tempted to skimp on the diameter of the hole. Don't. It's very important for the roots to penetrate outward, especially at an early stage.

Thanks everyone. I planted 8 little bitty spruce trees last year (about 8" tall) I only have 2 left and they look like **** Ha!
These are 6'-8' Aspens. Yes OD the ground where Im planting is very VERY hard. Dry & rocky Im thinking about adding some store bought top soil instead of just the natural dirt but others have told me not to do that??? Also someone gave me a bottle of "root stimulater" I guess I throw abit of that in there. Thinking about puting a drip line all around them and letting it soak about 2 hours every evening then adding extra every couple of days???
Again Thanks for the advice everyone.

Dig you hole about 1 1/2 times the diameter of the ball. Make sure the hole isn't deeper than the top of the ball. Ater the hole is dug, place the tree in the hole. Run the hose in the hole while backfilling. Run it at a trickle, though. After youve bacfilled to about one or two inches from the top of the ball. Take a razor knife and cut arount the top of the ball. Then backfill just about in inch over the top of the newly exposed ball.
I said exposed ball!!

Hey, a serious question for everyone. I've got a Meyers lemon tree planted in my backyard and its only 3 years old. The problem is, it is a slow grower and gets very bogged down when it produces its fruit. Is there a way to brace this puppy up without hurting its root system (keeping in mind that it is merely 3 feet high).
Also, do fruit trees require any additional vitamins or nutrients?

Um, have you ever actually been to Denver, dude?
You could probably count the number of hotties on one hand and still have fingers left over.
The closest thing to a 'hottie' I've seen in Denver is a college chick or two in Boulder.
(I know, I know - those California girls have probably spoiled me for life.)

Dont get carried away my friend. In order to keep balance in the universe to off set the planting of trees Im also building a huge ass deck on the back of the house this summer. They will have to cut down 10x the number of trees somewhere to build her ;D

permadeck never heard of it but will certainly take a look. Trex is very expensive but not completely out of control compared to say redwood conheart. If my estimate is any good redwood would only save me about 800 bucks in materials. Im going to hire someone to frame the deck then I'll lay the decking and put up railings myself to offset some of the costs.

I know nothing about construction except what people tell me. A client last year told me he went to Alpine Lumber and bought something that did not get as hot in the summer as Trex and was less likely to warp in the heat from the sun or fade. I don't know the name, but he said it went together with clips rather than screws, because it was so hard to drill into.

Since there is nothing going on here today UPDATE
5 of 6 trees are looking happy the other one is drying up a bit. I'll be more then happy if I only lose the one.
Radishs are growing like wildfire and the carrots are coming along ok but the cucumbers better pick up the pace or they wont make it.
Sunflowers are 2' tall and tons of other flowers are growing but not blooming yet.
Last years surviving spruces are alive but just barely.

I told you to go with the fake palm trees. They would never die and you don't need to water them. Worst that could happen is that you would have to stand them back up if they got blown over in a wind storm. ;D
