Bush denies eavesdropping on U.S. phones
But president sidesteps issue of compiling millions of call records

Updated: 1:03 p.m. ET May 16, 2006
WASHINGTON - President Bush insisted Tuesday that the United States does not listen in on domestic telephone conversations among ordinary Americans. But he declined to specifically discuss the government’s alleged compiling of phone records, or whether it would amount to an invasion of privacy.

“We do not listen to domestic phone calls without court approval,” Bush said in an East Room news conference with Australian Prime Minister John Howard.

“What I’ve told the American people is we’ll protect them against an al-Qaida attack. And we’ll do that within the law,” Bush said.

The president’s new press secretary, Tony Snow, later insisted that Bush’s comments did not amount to a confirmation of published reports that the NSA’s surveillance was broader than initially acknowledged and that it included secretly collecting millions of phone-call records.

Bush said, “This government will continue to guard the privacy of the American people. But if al-Qaida is calling into the United States, we want to know, and we want to know why.”

However, he did not respond directly when asked whether it was a violation of privacy for the National Security Agency to seek phone records from telephone companies.

A Senate confirmation hearing is scheduled for Thursday on Bush’s nomination of Air Force Gen. Michael Hayden to head the Central Intelligence Agency. As the NSA director from 1999-2005, Hayden oversaw the government’s warrantless surveillance program.

Questions about that program, and new revelations about the NSA’s phone data bank, may be obstacles to Hayden’s confirmation.

Bush did appear to acknowledge the NSA sweep of phone records indirectly, saying that the program referred to by a reporter in a question “is one that has been fully briefed to members of the United States Congress in both political parties.”

“They’re very aware of what is taking place. The American people expect their government to protect them within the laws of this country and I’m going to continue to do just that,” he said.

There is already proof that he has done just that.

Peace activists, environmentalists and Quakers were among those targeted in the NSA's spying, according to the Times, which held release of its series for one year, under pressure from the White House, and reconfirmed facts.

So are you trying to claim that the ACLU's facts aren't straight in this instance, i.e., that peace activists, environmentalists and Quakers were not among those targeted in the NSA's spying?

You might want to do a Google search before you make that your final answer.

the ACLU infringes on the rights of the every day american NOT to have to put up with the special interests groups mantra every single day. True, possibly, slanted in their presentation of the facts, almost twisted? Absolutely, at every turn. ....they are a detriment and a black eye to the every day american and aide terrorists most of the time. They need to be tried and sentenced just like the damn terrorists. Actually what I found was the above monitoring of anti-war groups by the DOD. Did they tap?

And as for the quakers, this appears to be the nut.

It is the smoking gun to show warrantless taps on peace activists? no. But its getting closer

Exactly.

You'd be hard pressed to find any American - no matter what his political leanings - who doesn't want the president to protect us from the bad guys.

The issue is that Bush already has all the power he needs to spy on the bad guys (read: FISA court) without breaking the law, urinating on the Constitution, and declaring himself the sort of king from whom we declared our independence 200+ years ago.

Well, that may be true L.A., but it takes a certain amount of skill to utilize the tools that the government has already been given. And if anything else is clear, it is that Bush and most of the people he has appointed to key positions are, and always have been, incompetent.

Bush went through his whole life as a rich boy having rules bent for his personal convenience, and there is no reason to think that he would now see the Constitution as anything other than another pesky rule that can be set aside for him and his friends whenever it's not convenient.
