View Full Version : The DAY I take my visor off.

Figures. I decided I didn't have to wear my Oakley half-visor anymore since the season is over. Lo and behold, I just got back from probabally the most physical pickup hockey game ever played.... the very day I decide to take off my visor. Well, I was chasing down a puck and got leveled by some guy that was like 6'4".... got a 3rd degree concussion.... next thing I know I was taking a slapshot to the face. I got 3 stiches. This one was worse than the laceration I got on my finger chasing down an icing in Colorado. I gave the guy a black eye later in the game.
Unfortunatley this locker room pic doesn't do justice. But all I had was my camera phone -

My Dad caught a puck in the face about a year ago...almost took out some teeth.
Did you see Ryan Smyth the other night? Jeebuz!

Why did you take off your visor? I'm not the safety patrol or anything, but I'm wondering why some decide not to wear it?

I get pissed off when the sweat and steam generates on it and it impairs your vision.

Oh you best believe I fought. I though I was in over my head... considering the guy was like 6'4" 220 and played in Toronto.... I think he let me win.... I congratulated him on a good hit afterward, though.
And yes Im hoping the chicks dig it. Hopefully it doesent taste like blood when we make out though.... lol

Everyone should wear a visor. Need a reason? Ask Steve Yzerman.

That's just scary though.

Yes, Berard's career was supposed to be over. Somehow he managed to get his vision back to 20/600, the minimum requirement to play in the NHL.
His injury was one of the scariest I've ever seen. The blade of Hossa's stick caught him square in the eyeball.

Mats Sundin has always been on again/off again with his visor. He put it back on for good after taking a puck to the eye in the season opener.

They really need to mandate visors. There was a time when it was considered un-manly for goaltenders to wear masks. There was a time when no one wore helmets. But those things all passed as time went on, so can visors.
Though I will say that Bobby Orr had a great line about helmets. Someone once made the remark that Orr wouldn't go out there without his protective cup on, yet he wouldn't wear a helmet. His response with a grin was, "I can always get someone else to do my thinking for me."

Yep, and Berard is still playing.
I'm sure Smurf will wear his visor when he skates on at DU, and when he's drafted by the AVS.
Stevie Y's eye was gross, but he wore a visor this year. I hate Stevie Y for all the right reasons. In 2002 he was playing on a knee that wasn't functional. I yelled and screamed for the AVS to put the body on him. He's friggin' Stevie Y, and they couldn't.
The guy is simply an ALL TIME great in any sport.
I love to hate the Great Stevie Y.

My most ringing memory of him came from my younger years. I think it was against the Blues in the playoffs. He wired a slapshot from the blueline to win the game in OT, in a breakaway situation. Sweet...

There are certain Wings I could never bring myself to hate. Yzerman, Lidstrom and (believe it or not) Holmstrom specifically.
Yzerman played for nearly two decades without a visor and wised up thanks to that horrific injury from the picture I posted earlier. If that's not enough to get youngsters to put them on, I don't know what ever will be.

I've always liked Holmstrom. The guy makes a living parking himself in front of the net and taking an absolute beating for the good of his team. He does all that and never whines or complains, just gets back up and sticks his ass right back in the opposing goalies' face.
He's one of the guys who's done all he can to dispel the myth that all Euros are soft.

I know, it's a wonder that he never got the ol' "cup check" from Roy that Ciccarelli did.
I'll take Holmstrom on my team any day.

I actually like a lot of the Redwings Players. Expecially Zetterberg and Yzerman.
Not a big fan of Matby or Shanahan though.

Rub tobacco(sp?) on your visor...it works for the scuba divers...it couldn't hurt the orangemane's own SEAL washout, and future Pioneer stud.

Really? Shanahan's a badass. He fights like a wildman and he can score...
Matlby's a bitch though...I generally hate other team's pests (not mine though;) ).

Have you seen me play?
Do you think I have potential to play for the Pioneers?
I played for the Foothills Flyers in Littleton and I was pretty good. I'm sakting with a minor team now, The Jacksonville Barracudas, I hear they are the second affiliate to the New York Rangers (Like the Gulls to the Av's).

Actually aside from Naslund...the Swede's are tough. Yeah...Naslund is the only puss in the bunch.

No. I have never seen you play. I'm sure you are skating with some team in Jacksonville. That doesn't mean sh!t. Smurf...you're always doing something. You're a lot of talk.
I don't care who you skate with...you're not "walking on" to DU's hockey team...just like you were not going through BUDS when you said you were. Sailors apply to BUDS...and are rejected. You're not fooling anyone man. You're just completely full of sh!t.
God's speed to you in the future man...but quit saying you're going to "walk on" to one of the top Hockey programs in the U.S...and spare us with your talk about how you "almost" made the teams.
You're just silly.
Hey...I heard that the Sports Chalet sells a stick with a pretty mean Modano curve...Check it out.
P.S. Wear your visor double lip.

I don't know why I bother. You're right, I didn't go to BUDs... I got Pnumonia a couple weeks into training and rejected medically. Talk to Mock, I know he was PM-ing me like crazy while I was going through all of this.
I know absolutly nothing about DU. It's just an idea and a dream.

Yeah man. My previous post was out of line. Unnecessarily mean spirited.
Good luck with your hockey, and if you try again...making the teams...maybe it will work out for you.
But seriously...just wear the visor.
