Reading an ESPN.com article on Jimmy Smith, I noticed the career reception leaders in the NFL. I know Rod has had a hell of a career, but I didn't realize how close he was to some of the big boys.
Jerry Rice 1,549
Cris Carter 1,101
Tim Brown 1,094
Andre Reed 951
Art Monk 940
Marvin Harrison* 927
Jimmy Smith 862
Irving Fryar 851
Larry Centers 826
Keenan McCardell* 825
There is the top ten with * denoting active players. Rod currently has 797 receptions. He'll certainly finish in the top ten by the time his career comes to an end.
How the hell do you keep this guy out of the hall of fame?

Also, for what it's worth, here is the list of leaders in recieving yards....
1. Jerry Rice 22,895
2. Tim Brown 14,934
3. James Lofton 14,004
4. Cris Carter 13,899
5. Henry Ellard 13,777
6. Andre Reed 13,198
7. Steve Largent 13,089
8. Irving Fryar 12,785
9. Art Monk 12,721
10. x-Marvin Harrison 12,331
11. x-Jimmy Smith 12,287
12. x-Isaac Bruce 12,278
13. Charlie Joiner 12,146
14. Michael Irvin 11,904
15. Don Maynard 11,834
16. x-Rod Smith 10,877
17. Gary Clark 10,856
18. Stanley Morgan 10,716
19. x-Keenan McCardell 10,680
20. x-Terrell Owens 10,535
21. Harold Jackson 10,372
22. Lance Alworth 10,266
23. Andre Rison 10,205
24. x-Randy Moss 10,147
25. Shannon Sharpe 10,060
He has a pretty good shot at ending up in the top ten before it's all said and done.
Looking at both of these lists really makes me wonder how Art Monk keeps getting the shaft on the HoF as well.

Art Monk getting the shaft is a good indicator that Rod Smith has very little shot. The Hall doesn't like Broncos to begin with, if a guy is anywhere near borderline, he isn't getting in.

Best UDFA ever also HAS to be considered, altho, im sure he wont he get in.

He should be a first ballot HOFer for what he does OFF the field.
He is the ultimate team captain and leader at a time when his position has turned into the worst group of whiners imaginable.

Damn..
Makes you realize how really unbreakable Jerry Rice's records are.. Even a guy as great as Marvin Harrison would need like 7-8 more sesons to make a run at it and that wont happen
I think we will see a RB in our lifetime beat Emmit Smith's records but I think it is safe to say Jerry Rice's are untouchable
If Favre retires before breaking Elway's win record, you guys think that will remain an unbreakable record??

No, with the Peytons and Tom Bradys of the league, 1 of those 2 guys will eventually break it, especially since they both have great teams around them as well.

This is exactly what I thought. If Monk can't get in as an east-coast media team favorite, the ignored Bronco won't make it for sure.

Marvin Harrison is quietly going to be number 2 on almost all of those records when he retires. He continues to be one of the top 5 WR's in the league who everyone forgets about year in and year out.

Smith is a HOF player no matter what the idiots who vote say. He might crack the top 10 for a while but Moss and Harrison will finish higher, meaning Rod probably has to play three more years to finish in the top 10, which is pretty doubtful but you never know... Next to Rice, the most amazing name on this list is Maynard, who played in an era during the 1960's before teams were passing the ball all over the place like they are now. He was the Jerry Rice of his era.
Sharpe belongs to...only TE on the list at 25.

Rod has better season numbers than Monk. Reed has impressive numbers, and 4 super bowl trips is nothing to quip at. Those are the two guys I look at as similar to Rod Smith on that list that havent yet made it, but Rod also has 2 rings. SB33 he was outstanding as well. Since John retired Rod has not skipped a beat, shown himself as the unquestioned leader of the Broncos offense, and is all class off the field since he split with his wife.
HOF...no doubt about it. I am not worried at all.

Rod truely is a remarkable story...just serves as a constant reminder how many potentially great players are ignored from Div II, but it remains astounding to me how far out of reach Jerry Rice put his stats.
How in Gods' name does one man gain 20-thou + yards receiving??
Yeah, I know, play twenty years...but at an average of 1000 yards plus every season...to the age of 40+???
It's inhuman

That's why I picked him in the rushmore thread...no one did it as well as Rice did it for as long as Rice did it.

You could say that like Vladimar Guerrero was his first 4 years but with fantasy football/baseball gets name recognition to even the average fan. Harrison ahs been widely known for at least 5 years now. Rod Smith started getting more love from the national media last year. Football HOF is so much different than the Baseball HOF. A lot tougher. Just ask Gradishar or Tombstone Jackson.

High powered offensses, with 2 HoF QB's.
But that doesn't take anything from the fact he played as long as he did, as well as he did, with no major slipups.
