Just curious.. I know Duke has #84 and Walker will prob wind up with it but since TD retired has anyone taken #30?? Is it just out of respect to TD?? Any chnace of the Broncos retiring it??
I know Sharpe wasnt exactly a management favorite sometimes, but his number was given away too quickly
Think the same think will happen for Rod Smith?? I dont see a rokie WR taking #80 right away either
Just curious on the #30 thing.. I havent paid close enough attention to see if anyone ever wore #30 since

I don't think so, but Bowlen has stated that he's reluctant to retire numbers Only so many unless you start using Roman numerals.

Its hard to retire numbers in football because you have so many players. I think you have to be one of the all time greats to deserve to have your number retired. The players still get honored with the Ring of Honor though.

Santonio Beard wore it in Training Camp/Pre-Season either last year, or the year before, but no one that has made the active roster has worn it.
As for retiring it, Bowlen has said that the player must be of "Elway status" to have the number retired. TD was unreal, but not "Elway status" to Bowlen.
Who is Elway status?
TD was awesome but certainly not Elway.

Also, they can sort of not issue 30 a lot easier than a 80's series number. All 80's numbers are needed but with the 20's, 30's, and 40's available to RBs and DBs not every number is needed.
It's the same with the 50's, the Bears still issue Butkus' number 51 out of necessity. Opps, I was wrong, it was retired, sorry...

Next number to be retired...#6...BooYaa!! Don't laugh, it could happen in a galaxy far far away. I can't wait to see this kid in preseason to see if he's the real deal and doesn't line up under guard.

Was Frank Tripucka Elway status? His number 18 is retired, he played only 4 seasons. There was some hubub about it last year...

That was way before Bowlen, it was not his decision to retire that number. It was not his decision to retire #44 either. Moving forward Bowlen has said that it will take a player to reach Elway's stature to warrant consideration for thier number to be retired.
Plus they decided not to reissue the Jersey # 18. Here are the details:

Denver will keep No. 18 jersey retired (9/10/05)
By FRANK SCHWAB THE GAZETTE
ENGLEWOOD - The Denver Broncos have decided they will not reissue jersey No. 18, which was retired for quarterback Frank Tripucka.
In the offseason, the Broncos issued No. 18 to receiver Grant Mattos, who was released before training camp. The move was a surprise because No. 18 had been recognized for years by the Broncos as being retired.
Tripucka played with Denver from 1960-63, the team's first four seasons.
Broncos vice president of public relations Jim Saccomano said in June the team was searching old files, including newspaper clips, because it couldn't find proof that Tripucka's number was retired.
But Saccomano said that shortly after owner Pat Bowlen got back from vacation in Hawaii this summer, Bowlen decided Tripucka's No. 18 would not be issued again. The Broncos informed the Tripucka family the issue is resolved.
"They said absolutely, positively the issue is taken care of - the number is retired and always will be retired," said Tracy Tripucka, one of Frank's sons. "My dad is just thrilled."

tripuckas number clearly shouldnt have been retired, but at the time it was a move by a young team to try and start some history.
#44 is a COMPLETELY different case, and floyd little WAS "elway status".
floyd little is HANDS DOWN the greatest running back this team has ever had (terrell, as great as he was, would have gotten destroyed behind that late 60's, early 70's line).
floyd little was "mr. bronco" before elway was in middle school.
floyd little put this team on the radar.
he was the first #1 draft pick to actually sign with the broncos (earlier #1 picks opted for the nfl instead).
he was the 1st bronco back to lead the league in rushing and be considered one of the elite players in the league.
the other team knew floyd was getting the ball. the coaches knew floyd was getting the ball. the fans knew floyd was getting the ball.
hell, the water boy and the newborn kid sitting with dad knew floyd was getting the ball....
.....and he STILL managed to gain yards.
he could run around people, and he could run over people.
his number ABSOLUTELY deserves to be retired, and its a complete sham that he's not in the hall of fame.
he is the second best bronco player ever to take the field, and like gale sayers, his career was cut short. God only knows what he couldve done on a better team with a longer career.
NO bronco fan should ever forget where we came from, and no bronco fan should forget how much floyd little meant to this team and this city.

Well the last QB phenom that we had, I forget his name, lined up under guard! I think that would be a positive omen if anything!

Jake, I didn't mean to imply that #44 should not be retired, I was simply saying that Bowlen was not the "decider" on retiring that number.
Your post rules.
What are the chances Rod's #80 gets retired? Years and years of production on the field (and service off the field) for the organization.

He would get my vote. In Rod We Trust.
I don't see it happening though. Especially since Sharpe, arguably the greatest Tight End ever, didn't have his number retired...
