1st- and 2nd-graders accused of sexual assault

12 allegedly attacked 2nd-grade girl during recess at St. Louis school

Updated: 9:39 p.m. ET May 9, 2006
ST. LOUIS - Twelve boys in the first and second grade at a St. Louis elementary school are accused of sexually assaulting a second-grade girl during recess, authorities said Tuesday.

One teacher who was supposed to be supervising the recess has been fired, and another suspended with pay, school superintendent Creg Williams said. Ten of the boys, ages 6 to 8, were suspended for the rest of the school year, and the other two received five-day, in-school suspensions.

No names were released.

The girl, who is 8, was unharmed physically but will not return for the rest of the school year. "We don't know what type of emotional scars it will have on the young lady," Williams said.

The incident happened Friday at Columbia Accelerated Community Educational Center, a school with 400 students in pre-kindergarten through sixth grade on the city's north side.

During the recess shortly after lunch, a student saw several boys huddled around the girl who was on the ground, and alerted a teacher.

Police turned the investigation over to juvenile authorities. A court official said the boys could face misdemeanor counts of sexual misconduct and assault.

lack of parenting

Thank you thank you thank you. I just knew the first response was gonna be TV or video games. It all starts and ends at home. Well and church but that would turn this thread in the wrong direction Im sure.

lack of parenting

definitely the primary reason but, in and of itself, too simplistic. we don't parent in a vacuum.

I disagree example would the the boy who turned the group in to the teacher. I'd bet you $100 without ever meeting this young man or his parents that they have worked hard to raise their child with some sort of morals unlike the heathens that were attacking this girl.

i can agree with that, partially. but one solitary good deed doesn't mean he's beyond reproach. a blanket statement that he's got morals can't be determined. all that can be determined is that he has a better moral base than the derelict kids. no matter how much parents drill something into their kids, the culture still has some effect on their moral make up, IMO.

Teaching right and wrong should be done when they are young those kids didn't get that luxury obviously.

I certainly can agree with that society does play a role. I do think we under estimate the power of talking with our kids thou. They listen and hear more then we think they do. A strong home will better prepare them for the world. IMO simple things like playing catch/eating at the dinner table/weekend outings are a huge reason for the moral decline in our children.

I should have said the lack there of.

While we're being pendantic, you really can't even say THAT much. After all, maybe his reasons for turning the kids in weren't based in morality, but rather because he was trying to get back at them for something else. Maybe he's murdered he goes home every night and murders a neighbors dog. Maybe he's killed his baby brother..

:)

I would tend to agree with Hotrod on this, tho. The most likely explanation is that he has a firm moral base.

When I was in the 6th grade...we literally played grab-ass during recess...but the girls were just as bad. What did these kids think they were going to do? They didn't get that idea from their parents...somebody though... close to one of those kids is leaving the porn out.

KEEP KIDS AWAY FROM PORN. They're not old enough to understand it.
