Also, you can watch some of his Sunday Conversation on ESPN's Motion on the NFL section of the site. Enjoy.
As far as the contract, it'll be five-years extended onto this one. So it's essentially him playing out his final deal in GB, then getting the new extension. Interesting stuff. Hopefully it's finalized soon.

The contract is interesting. He gets a 1 million dollor bonus this season. Say he sucks and cant come back from the injury can we cut him before the 10 mil. next season ?

This is GREAT !!! I didn't realize that he would be playing out the final year of his contract under us.....
So we'll give him $1M.....plus whatever his 5th year rookie contract had for base salary....which is probably around 500k......a 1.5M cap hit? That' great, cause if he is NOT recovered from the injury.....we cut him loose after this year, and he'll never see a penny of the $40M extended contract.....
I DEFINITELY feel much more comfortable about this now......

I must be missing somthing but why did Javon agree to this contract. Seems like its pretty one sided in favor of the Broncos. We get an up close and personal look at Javon for a mil plus his rookie base and then can decied if we want him for the long term.

Well, he DID get another MILLION for his one year trial plus an extension if all goes well. Considering he is coming off major knee surgery that is not a bad bonus to get.
Not 1,000 dollars
not 10,000 dollars
not 100,000 dollars
but 1,000,000 dollars!
Thats like a lawyer who just had his tongue removed and reinserted getting a bonus from the law firm for his previous work. Everybody is taking a chance here.

Actually, his cap figure might even be less.....it depends on how it was structured.
But if the $1M we're giving him upfront is not just for his final year of the original contract....and we can push that over this year and the next 5 years as well.....then basically this $1M could be divided by 6 years in total (again, MAYBE)......
Therefore his cap figure could be well under $1m this year (say, $500K base salary, plus the $1M divided by 6)......again, not sure how it's structured.....

I must be missing somthing but why did Javon agree to this contract.
Well, contrary to many people's complaints that we "gave" him too much money.....Shanahan is clearly NOT stupid.....this is the "safety" clause that he built in......
Obviously, Javon MUST prove that he is FULLY recovered from his injury.....this is great for us.....cause he has to have a big-time season for us to cash in on the big payday....
We can look for Javon to have a HUGE year.....cause he clearly has something to prove, not only in terms of ego....but clearly for his wallet.

If I'm understanding the cap correctly, if he can't comeback from the injury, and the Broncos let him go, there is no cap hit. If that's the case, then the only risk is that draft pick that the Broncos gave up for him.

If this is the case, then I take back every negative thing I said about the trade (mostly worried about giving guaranteed Money to a gimp)
Never thought he would sign a wait and get paid contract...I'm impressed.

I think a lot of people's concern was that he was going to be getting a big chunk of the bonus this year.....but it's not....just the $1m in chump change.....and that is nothing if he pans out (has truly recovered from the injury).....
Then next offseason we can decide if he's worth the $40M extension.....

Yea that does make Lelie look pretty dumb. Sounds like the compition should be open to anyone this season. In fact if Lelie (who I like) had some balls he would come in and compete and take Javon's money away from him. He could look for the 40 million dollar deal next year.
That really does take away lelie's argument about a guy making that much money being givin a starting job, when this year they will be making close to the same amount.

and if you figure worst case scenerio, the Broncos could be looking for 3 more WR this time next year if Rod retires, Walker doesn't recover from his knee injury and Lelie has been traded.

Pretty smart structuring on the part of Sundquist and Shanahan. Walker wanted his money and you can't particularly blame him, in today's professional sports climate most athletes asociate their pay checks less with paying bills and making ends meet and more with respect from their organization.
As messed up as it seems, I don't think the movie Jerry McGuire was totally off when Cuba Gooding Jr.'s character talked about "kwan" being respect, and that money is respect. We've given Walker the chance to earn respect for himself as a football player by coming back from his ACL and putting up the numbers he was capable of in 2004. I look forward to seeing a highly motivated Walker in orange and blue next year. :)

Walker will make close to $25 million in salary and bonuses over the first three years of the deal (2007-09), making him one of the highest-paid receivers in the game.
What makes any of you think we can cut him if he sucks this year, and not pay him the $10 mill he is due in 06?
I guarantee that money will be guaranteed...

Walker has plenty of reasons to be content, considering he now has the ability to provide financially for his loved ones, friends and generations of Walkers to come. The Broncos and agent Kennard McGuire are finalizing a five-year extension (set to kick in next year) worth about $40 million that includes a $15 million, two-tiered option bonus, $10 million due in 2007 and the other $5 million due in '08. Walker will play out the final year of his rookie contract plus receive a $1 million roster bonus from the Broncos.

Thats why. Two option bonuses. They're called options for a reason.

Again, who really thinks that this contract will not be guaranteed. Don't be so simple minded people. What am I not comprehending? No where in the article does it say we can cut him if he sucks, and face only the risk of him giving an extra 1 million.

And where are you reading that it's all guaranteed? To me, it looks like Walker will be due the first option bonus on the XX of 2007. Perhaps there are some requirements of that option, that have to do with #of snaps, % of playing time, etc. But the key word here is option and it appears that only when the option is exercised does it become guaranteed monies.
Just curious....is 2pac refering to Bush Senior in your sig?

That's what I am wondering, these option bonuses are confusing. If you decide to keep the guy you pay the option bonus in some cases, David Carr for example. I am looking at Chad Johnson's deal, a much better WR, and we paid more for Javon Walker, but it looks like Javon's money is way heavy in these option bonuses, which makes them all the more important.

Pretty much, yeah. We gave him a 5 year extension and a $1M bonus to this season, but in order to see the $25M through 2007-2009 he's going to have to stay on the roster.
Now with a lot of players deals like this suggest an obvious renegotiation. Thats what we did with Courtney Brown last year, giving him an '06 roster bonus of some obscene number, think it was $8M. He renegotatied before the deadline though so he didn't need to be cut. Walker is a different level player though, and he might not be so receptive to a renegotation after only one season. Still it seems all too likely that no matter how Walker plays on the field this year we'll look to restructure his contract in some way come the deadline for that $10M bonus, if nothing else just to prorate the cap hits throughout the life of his deal.

Exactly.
The Broncos have a safety net in case Walker can't come all the way back from his knee injury and Walker has all the incentive in the world to put up a monster season. There's really not much downside to it for the Broncos.

Yep.....and Javon is probably smart enough to realize that any GM worth his salt, would've done this type of deal....coming of an ACL injury, no one was going to guarantee him HUGE money for this upcoming season.....
And as such, since he was basically going to get the same type of deal regardless of where he played this year....he figured he might as well be on a winning team.....
.....that's why the Chiefs were never a consideration for him......;)

I like that he has to play out his rookie contract, at least for show, and it gives us a bit of an out if he totally flops or get a career ending injury this year, but it also gives him the luxury of not having to birng it all this year if he isnt fully up to it yet.
Also looking at the quote below is it any wonder why Lelie feels certain he is glued to the #3 spot no matter what?"
Walker had brunch with Shanahan on Friday the 28th and the coach went so far as to bring Walker to his home to meet his wife. It excited Walker to hear Shanahan's plans for how he'd use him opposite Rod Smith.
"Deep down I knew that [Denver] would be a perfect fit for me," Walker says. "That's what I've always wanted, to go into a game knowing that the ball club is trying to figure out a way to get the ball to Javon Walker."
Rightly or wrongly that is the message being conveyed to Lelie inspite of what ever political statements of ther being a fair and open competition coming out of Dove Valley to try to force Lelie to comply.
Shanny obvioiusly never made such statements of encouragement to Lelie this offseason and so he feels like nothing more than an insurance policy for Shanny this season which is about right.
What Lelie needs to realize is he doesn't really have any options at this point if Shanny turns hard core on this thing as he might and refuses to work out a trade. Its only in Shanny's best interest to make Lelie stay and he may well be willing to blow whatever value we have locked up in Lelie if Ash sticks by his guns and holds out which could ruin Lelies career in the process.
Its not a great situation for either side.
A. If Lelie leaves either by trade for a future draft pick or hold out we are a weaker team this year than if both he and Walker were here .. maybe a LOT weaker if Walker isnt up to snuff ...
B. If Lelie stays its good for the team, but likely crappy for him so Shanny is going to press for option B until perhaps it seems cetain Lelie will indeed walk and then maybe at the last minute work out a swap with some one to recover at least something from him.

Actually, he doesn't have that luxury. If he doesn't bring it all this year, he can be released and that extension disappears before his very eyes. He has to prove that he's worth the money before he sees any of it. Trust me, we'll see everything Walker has to offer this year. If he's all the way back from his injury (and judging by his willingness to give the Broncos a one year trial run, he will be) he's going to be a beast on the field.

I really like that he has to play out his rookie contract. Shanny and company have had this policy that you have to play out your rookie deal before you get paid. Look at Al Wilson for example. He was very productive but had play out his deal. Shanny and company didn't set a new precident with this deal. This will actully help in future negotations with players.

His contract this year is his rookie deal still, probably seeing about what Lelie is, $1.4M. So we're bumping it to $2.4ish mill.
What happens in Javon's future is largely determined on this year's performance. The better he does the more leverage he has, and he also has the "don't budge and go FA" route. What I personally expect is a solid season from Walker, followed by the FO restructuring his two $15M options into signing bonuses, spread over the life of the contract. How much he's asked to "give back" will depend on how he plays this year. If he's a pro bowler he'll probably get the entire pile or damn close to it.
Smart move by the FO to tier the bonus money and protect themselves, though I'm left somewhat concerned that Walker might rush himself back from the ACL, trying to prove himself. I guess with Lelie being a tea bagger we don't have to worry quite as much about that though. ;P
