View Full Version : David Terrell likely to be #3 WR...per ESPN.
Maybe this has already been posted, but ESPN's "Whispers Around the NFL" for today is saying that if Lelie is traded (which they say is likely) David Terrell will be the #3 WR on the depth chart.
It said Terrell has a good understanding of our "complex" offense after studying a year on the bench last season.

Nothing's given, but I wouldn't doubt it. We have a lot of youngsters back there and potential. I was hoping Marshall could earn it. :)

I thought I heard he would be given a shot at TE too if he bulked up a bit

Terell and Walker are the future. Would be nice if Marshall filled out at Hback and could go wide or inside.

Opening training camp as #3 really doesn't mean anything for the regular season, or even preseason for that matter. He will have to earn it. I think Watts will overcome his mental mistakes and push for that #3 as well.

Why not? He's got the same size as Lelie, almost as fast, was taken higher in the draft and instead of running his mouth about his status on the team he's reportedly doing everything asked in terms of working on his game. He's also playing with two good hands.
1. Rod
1a. Walker
3. Terrell
4. Marshall
5. Hixon/Watts/Devoe/etc...
Gone: Ashley Lelie

Marshall is 6'5 - 230 right now. He wouldn't need to bulk up that much, but I'd much rather see him play WR than H-Back or TE. He'd create serious mismatches against cornerbacks, that's for damn sure. I just hope we don't carry 5 tight ends this year.
Leach has been a good player for us, but with the addition of guys like Kuper and Scheffler who can long-snap, I don't think we need to keep a spot for him. Nate Jackson, I don't see why we need him either. We carried 6 WR's and 5 TE's active roster, so we can expect 10-11 this year as well. I think we have an overflow of receivers, and incase Walker isn't healthy, we keep more WR than TE.
TE: Scheffler, Duke and Alexander
Tweener: Marshall
WR: Smith, Walker, Terrell, Watts, Hixon, Devoe, Adams. (Assuming Lelie isn't with us.)

Terrell would be a great TE, hybrid-type if he can block well enough.
Still holding out hope for Watts. Physically, he's as gifted as any of them.

I agree that it would be great if marshal were to remain at WR. What a 3rd down pass-catching mothua he would be! Goal line pushes would have a whole new meaning.
One thing that is evident is that Shanahan said he wanted to upgrade the speed of the O. Maybe he did......
Walker will be an integral part of all game plans, and I would imagine the Broncos would take it easy with him until the first or second game.

Would be a little surprising considering Terrell hasnt done anything yet for the Broncos. I would put Adams or Lelie in before Terrell.

I don't see why either. He doesn't need to bulk up either, Duke is smaller than him or the same size. Marshall in the slot against a nickel corner (depending on the defense's scheme) is domination. Can you imagine Darrent trying to cover him? I didn't think so. Hilarious!

Because Shanny said it.
I dont agree with it either tho, id love to have a BIG WR for once.
He said Marshall could be a slot guy/ H-Back for us.

It's funny that every year we talk about this great WR battle in training camp, and how one or two of them will develop into something great, and every year those young WRs pretty much suck. When was the last time one of these project WRs turned out to be anything good? I'd say '96, when Rod Smith and Ed McCaffrey turned out to be gems. But sense then the only WR who has had any type of impact is Lelie, who was a first round pick.
We could make a nice sized list of WRs who were HOF training camp player, who then amounted to nothing. Looks like Watts is going to end up on that list.

Not exactly like the days of the 3 amigos - I once saw all three at a CU football game from a distance of about 10', not one of them looked over 5'10". Those guys were up in student section not exactly watching the football game.

True!
Wonder if this is Heimerdinger putting his stamp on the position? Almost everyone of the receivers (with the exception of Ash and Watts) can also contribute on ST. The TE position should also be drastically altered this season. Jackson & Leach better start looking for work elsewhere.

Heimerdinger helped oversee the development of both Smith and MacAffrey so I'm sure he's got some significant input on these new guys as well.
He was also Shanahans roomate in college and worked on the Florida staff with him as well.
Editting Papi's list to show what jumps out at me. To the right is pounds per inch for each WR. Sorted by how the position battle currently sorts out (Rod #1, Adams/Watts at the bottom, on the hot seat).
Smith, Rod WR 6' 0" 200 2.78
Walker, Javon WR 6' 3" 215 2.87
Terrell, David WR 6' 3" 212 2.83
Lelie, Ashley WR 6' 3" 200 2.67
Devoe, Todd WR 6' 2" 198 2.67
Watts, Darius WR 6' 2" 190 2.57
Adams, Charlie WR 6' 2" 190 2.57
rookies held seperate as they're too new to have a place in the pecking order established.
Brandon Marshall 6' 4" 230 3.03
Domenik Hixon WR 6' 2" 192 2.59
If you ask me it looks like Shanahan is aiming to increase the level of physical play at the WR position, not just sending out scrawny burners like we have the last few years. I got no problems with that, Eddie Mac wasn't exactly a speed demon, but weighed in at 6'5", 215 pounds and played like he was 230.
As for the rookies, I think Hixon will see a role on special teams as a KR/PR as well as on coverage, probably taking either Devoe or Adams roster spot from last year. Marshall has a lot of ambiguity as far as where he'll play, but that probably won't be decided until a. Greek gets some up close and personal work in with him and b. Heimerdinger, Shanny, etc. get a better idea on his technical skills at WR, like route running, blocking, etc.. Depending on if Greek thinks he can add speed without loosing too much weight or vice versa, as well as what the coaching staff deems his current skill level to be at, he'll either stay at WR or move to TE. I personally hope we lean him up a little more, maybe shave off as much as 10 pounds to improve his speed and agility, and leave him at WR where he'd be a beast.

With the fabulous Chicago QBs (Hilarious! ) throwing to him, he put up:
128 catches, 1,602 yards for a 12.5 avg, 9 TDs.
Food for thought . . .
Muhsin Muhammad in 2004 with Carolina had 93 catches for 1,405 yards and 16 TDs.
With the Bears in 2005?
64 for 750 yards and 4 TD. I guess he's a bust too?
I think the QB and the system might have a little bit to do with production.

One thing about Heimerdinger. It seems like wherever he is, some, often unknown receiver develops and becomes pretty good. Mccareins, D. Bennett, Derrick Mason(really broke out the year Heimerdinger was hired). And obviously Smith and McCaffrey in Denver.

As much as we want Brandon Marshall to be bigger - he only weighted in at the combine and his workout as 210. The 230 number is from his college, and like everything in college football slightly bigger and larger then he really is. He still is a big guy
