Today a buddy of mine and I got into a discussion of favorite historic Broncos that weren't household names.
Here's the quick list I came up with....
Glyn Milburn -- Don't know why, but always liked the guy
Mark Jackson -- ok, not obscure, but my fav of the 3 Amigos
Mike Young -- Great catch for a TD in the 89 AFC Champ Game
Derek Loville -- Guy cracked me up because even though he never played, he seemed like he talked the most trash.
Wyman Henderson -- Looked like a dork with the goggles, but always seemed to snag a bunch of interceptions on Super Techmo Bowl.

brisco was the first black QB in the AFL
american football league, no black had ever taken a snap at QB in the NFL or the AFL before marlin !
he later became a receiver for the dolphins, but the broncos were the FIRST team to give a black man a chance to play QB !

Wow, so many pop into mind, Gene Lang, Alton Montgomery, Le-Lo Lang, Reggie Rivers, Ron Holmes, Ricky Hunley, Bobby Micho, Derek Russell, Aurther Marshall, Kinchen Bros., Charles Dimry, Ken Lanier. I know most of those guys are from the 80's but that was when I was growing up and saw them play.

Michael Young, the WR with a promising career except for one thing... he was claustrophobic as hell and could not stand being inside an airplane. IIRC, he found a good niche in the front office.

Bobby Anderson. Local boy with huge talent (option qb) that just didn't fit the NFL. Class act.

Sam Graddy WR - Feet like Bob Hayes and hands like Roberto Duran.
Nate Wayne LB - Free agent LB who was released because he kept outplaying John Mobley and Ian Gold and making Shanahan's high draft picks look bad.
Keith Kartz C - Very solid center on some weak lines. His career ended on a Vail ski slope. Now sells real estate in Denver.
Mike Perez QB - Brought to training camp by Dan R66v6s repeatedly, even though he never had a Chinaman's chance of making the final cut. I guess Dan liked the way he ran a passing drill.
Mike McDonald LB - Another guy who never made the final roster, or, if he did, only suited up for a handful of games. Undrafted free agent pickup who played at Idaho or Montana in the mid 80s. The RMN and DPO bought into the hype when we brought him in for workouts. The guy had triangle numbers from hell and R66v6s was predicting he would go to Pro Bowls. Unfortunately all his physical gifts didn't translate when he was wearing pads. McDonald had about 1/10th the football ability of a guy like Darren Comeaux. 20 years later, whenever some previously unheard of street free agent shows up, I harken back to that photo of McDonald on the front of the DPO sports page.
Ken Woodard LB - Backup LB from the early 80s. Very dependable sub. Was actually pressed into service at cornerback against the Rams after a hellish injury cluster befell the secondary. He was predictably eaten alive, (by Deiter Brock no less), but major points for trying.
Arthur Marshall WR - We were so goddamn talent barren, this kid actually started a few games for us in 92/93 before R66v6s took him along to New York. Small and skinny with a shinbone so crooked he didn't look like he could walk normally, let alone run. Threw a blatant clip during a MNF 4th quarter comeback against the Raiders and the refs swallowed their whistles, which kept Arthur off my **** list for life.

Steve Sewell sticks out in my mind. Wasnt a big guy, but gave 110 % each time he got the ball, and just kind of threw his body around to get extra yards & took some hard shots to try and keep moving. Didn't he also throw the passes back across the field to Elway for scores ?

The man who made me a Broncos fan for life -- Gerald Wilhite!
I'm 13 years old, don't know a thing about football, but need to bone up on the rules so I can try out for the JV team and impress the girls. I turn on the Sunday afternoon NBC game (Bob Trumpy and Don Criqui, I believe) just in time to see him score a touchdown and do a backflip in full pads. "I'm a broncos fan," I said right then and there. 20 years later, and here we are....
Don't know if Wilhite is an 'obscure' player or not, seeing as he was 1st round draft choice at one point, but nobody but us Broncs fans remember him anymore....

CINCINNATI (AP) - Mark Herrmann, Denver's rookie quarterback, and Dave Preston combined on a 9-yard pass play with nine seconds left that produced the exhibition victory. Preston took the ball on the 1-yard line, fell, recovered and scrambled into the end zone for the winning points.

Two guys from the Reeves era conjure up a mixed bag of memories:
QB Scott Stankavich: Dan Reeves was determined to make a back-up QB out of this guy, but Scott finally surmised that Reeves was trying to kill him.
Most memorable for: 1984...Chicago Bears in Chicago as that '46' defense was coming together. Elway got hammered the first two snaps. Reeves pulls Elway inside of five minutes...Denver has minus offensive yardage...inserts Stankavich who almost gets beaten to death...Denver loses 21-0.
Stankavich waived after Chicago game...signed for another sacrificial stint that season, then waived again...Reeves calls him back for Training Camp; Scott-to-Dan; "no thanks"
Glen Hyde
most memorable for: Versatility. The guy had no talent...check that...he took pride in the fact that he could put away 10 pitchers of beer (at a bar called Washingtons) after every practice in Fort Collins (Training Camp site before Greeley).
Played LG/RG, C, LT, RT & Special teams despite barely topping 6-2 & 235 lbs.
What he lacked in talent, he more than compensated for in wit & guile.
Gave up more sacks than any Denver Bronco lineman...ever, but boy, what a team guy.

Randy Hilliard, without a doubt. The guy stuck around the NFL without any discernable football skills for nine years. He played four years in Denver, his final game was the most important in franchise history. He wasn't big, he wasn't fast. He couldn't cover a baby with a blanket. He recorded three of his five career interceptions as a Bronco. He never scored a touchdown or even recovered a fumble.
He nearly died on the field in the final moments Super Bowl XXXII when Steve Atwater went T-27 and decided to terminate all life forms in the immediate vicinity. Most of us remember that play, but my favorite Randy Hilliard moment came earlier in that game when he beat the piss out of Roid Ranger Travis Jervey at mid field on a punt return. Along with Eddie Mac's demolition of Brian Williams on that crackback and Atwater's ongoing hunter/killer mission, the Broncos showed the Packers that they were they to kick ass that Sunday and kick ass they did.
Here's to you, Randy Hilliard. You made good, Scrubby. Flash that Ring with pride.

Not only did this guy excel in the pre-season, but he really stepped it up in the regular season. Can you fn believe that he made the Pro Bowl in 1996?
No joke.
His best pro bowl play came vs Jax when he didn't feel the need to run off the field, and was our 12th defender. Unfortunately that is against the rules, and then he cost us the 3 peat.
On a lighter note I'm adding Mike Horan if noone else did, coffin corner specialist!!

Dom very good comeback. Some of the original list on this thread isnt very obscure. I had "Mark Jackson catch" for the tie in cleveland on my outgoing message. Like Jeremiah Castille, he isnt obscure to hard core denver fans. Maybe to the newbies this is obscure but Armstrong the kicker and Steve "thank god my ass is small enough to just have a football bounce off of it" Watson. How about some of the "son" names in the late 80s like OrSON Mobley , Mark JackSON, WatSON etc.

Barry Rose: Came to camp for about 4-5 strait years in the beginning 90's. Was a 5 foot 8 white WR from Buffalo U (I think) that looked like Travis McGriff.
He led the Broncos and probably the whole NFL in Preseason catches every year w/o once EVER dropping a ball that was within 4 yards of catchable just to earn his eventual annual reward of ...... being one of the final cutdown victims.
Randy Robbins: I thought #48 was a pretty good safety when called upon, but he was just buried behind #27 and #49 for the bulk of his "good years". Also, remember when the Broncos signed DARRYL HALL a S from the CFL who was supposed to be their version of Ronnie Lott? So we had Canada's Ronnie Lott along with Europes "Ronnie Lott" years later (George Coghill). I liked Coghill and i guess he's an honest to goodness football star over in Europe to this day.
Blake Ezor: I just remember that he ran for 100 vs the Saints one year when everyone else was hurt. Dominant White Running Back.
Derrek Russel: Was really on the ascent here (IMO) but spurned us for the big bucks and the Run 'n' Shoot system in Houston w/ Cody Carlson .......
