According to Ben Maller (http://www.benmaller.com/archives/2006/may/05.html#099021)...
The Broncos and wide receiver Javon Walker have reached agreement on the parameters of a new five-year, $42 million contract that includes close to $15 million worth of guaranteed money in options and bonuses, and just over $24 million in the contract's first three years. All that is left for the Broncos and Walker's representative, Kennard McGuire, to iron out is some of the language. It is, at this point, a formality. The deal is expected to be finalized in the next 24-72 hours, and Walker will sign it once he arrives at the Broncos training facility on May 8. The deal also includes standard contract language that protects the Broncos in the unlikely event that Walker cannot return from the season-ending knee injury he suffered last year.
Next week, Houston's general manager Charley Casserly is expected to meet with Texans owner Bob McNair. Many expect Casserly to leave Houston and become the top candidate for the job that Art Shell vacated in the NFL. If Casserly opts to leave, then the Texans leading candidate would become Broncos assistant general manager Rick Smith. The Texans also are expected to consider Packers director of pro personnel Reggie McKenzie and Panthers director of college scouting Tony Softli -- two deserving candidates. But Texans coach Gary Kubiak watched Smith work in Denver, knows what he's capable of, and Smith would be at the top of Kubiak's wish list.
Although Ashley Lelie has one year left on his Broncos contract, he has forfeited a $100,000 workout bonus by not participating in the team's offseason conditioning program and would lose another $1.3 million in salary and bonuses if he follows through on his threat to sit out the season. "I don't know enough about it to say whether I'm confident or not confident that he'll be back," owner Pat Bowlen said. "He's not holding out, yet, but if he does, like everybody else around here, I think he would be making a mistake."
