Anyone know all the details of Jake Plummer's contact? I know he signed a 7 year $40 million deal in '03, that it was restructured before last season, and that if he's released after the 06 season the Broncos would take no cap hit. What if he is released after the 07 or 08 season? I ask because there is little doubt this will be a key factor in how long Jake sticks around to groom Cutler, in addition to how fast Cutler progresses.

What about the 1 year extension he signed just before the Draft to help alliviate some of the Cap Crunch? One would think that with that extension he would receive some sort of guarantee either by way of money or by way of membership to the organization?
More over, what are everyone's thoughts about BVP at this point? Is he the next Kubiak? Will he hold the long term back-up position?

BVP may or may not make the team. IMO, it all lands on Cutler. IF he shows up and is really impressive, BVP is gone, if he struggles to grasp the NFL right away, i think BVP will continue to hold the #2 spot.
Plummer should be the starter for 2 more years, but it all depends on cutler. If he is better than jake he will start

Ludo. I usually agree with about 73.4% of what you say. However, I beg to differ on your projected time lines for Cutler's elevation to the Denver version of sainthood (Starting Quarterback) and for BVPs demise as a Bronco.
It is going to take some amount of time for Cutler to learn the O as well as get an idea of how the NFL Ds operate. He needs solid grounding in the O before he gets tossed out there and told to go play catch with Walker, Smith, et al. Thus, he can look impressive as heck but Plummer is the key to a possible super bowl run, and I don't think the coaches want to lose that opportunity. Further, BVP is likely to be a bit more versed, in a manner reminescent of the Keysone Kops, in the plays and the speed of the game, etc., and would be a logical backup in the near term. Even if Cutler looks good in pads, pants and helmet, I don't think he is going to be really ready for at least half the season or - more probably - more. No need to change horses in the middle of the river, and all of that sort of thing.
Next year, 2007, will be the year of Cutler Cult's official beginings. I expect the Broncos to carry three QBs this year. Thus, BVP stays one more year and Cutler gets to learn how to play football.

73.4%, how'd you come up with that? :~ohyah!:
I by no means am elevating his to sainthood. I am on the side that wants him to ride the pine, BUT just as Jake said, if he can somehow come in and compete and be better than JAke (not likely) then he will start.
But IMO, its best for JAke to be our guy for at least 2 more years. But it all depends on Cutlers progression because he obviously has some skills.
I hope BVP stays too tho, even if its on ST if need be. ^5

So do you know if the Broncos can keep release him without taking a cap hit from 2007 and beyond? Then it would make it a lot easier to deal with salary cap wise to keep Jake until they are sure Cutler will be ready.

We should do everything in our power to extend his contract. If Cutler is better, we can always release/trade Jake at some point. But, there are an awful lot of first round QB picks holding clipboards around the league. He might be the next Carson Palmer, but he also might be the next Tim Couch.
Jake has shown he can move the offense and be very productive in our system. He likes it in Denver.... extend his deal, make it more cap friendly and keep him around as insurance. Everyone wins.

He's under contract for four more seasons. You think we need him longer than that? Unless Cutler is a bust, I don't see it...

Proration of the remaining years of his signing bonus would hit the cap if he was released. $7m SB, so I'd say a minimum of $4m would hit the cap if he's traded cos there's no way in hell they'd release him.

Is it four? I thought it was two, maybe that's when we have an option?
If it's four, that's perfect... though we might need to re-structure it a bit, judging by the looks of the numbers I'm seeing.
As long as he's a starting option for the next two seasons, I'll feel like we're safe. I just don't want to mess things up because everyone's got a woodie for a draft pick. We've got a highly productive offense that stands to get even better with added weapons. No sense in screwing that up.

After they paid the $6 million signing bonus last year they can now cutr him at anytime with no cap hit.

No they can't. Jake's still got about $10M in money that he's been paid that has not hit the cap yet. That money has to hit at some point.

If he is still the starter for another 2-3 years and then hands over the reins to cutler, does anyone think he would stay on as the backup for less? Does he like it in Denver that much? Jake would be the best backup in the league.

The chances of Jake's contract getting extended, I would imagine, is pretty close to zero. We can't carry a 5-6 million dollar back-up quarterback. I'll be suprised to see Jake on the team past 2007 at these levels. He may be willing to renegotiate them lower... Or he might want to go chase dollars with a team that will let him start... Who knows?

There seems to still be some disagreement about whether or not the Broncos can cut Jake without a cap hit. I remember listening to am 950 the fan on draft day and they were making a big point that the Broncos could cut jake after the '06 season and not take a cap hit.
Ideally, I'd like to see him back in '07 with Cutler being given a chance to win the starting job in preseason. But salary cap issues may be a bigger concern for the Broncos, especially if Cutler is grasping the offense and looks ready.

Not to mention his dad was Jake Cutler. I'm pretty sure I read Jake gets a bonus after next year, and yes, I am pretty sure he got signing bonus pushed back. At any rate, he's not an expensive QB.
I also think he could still find a starting gig after a couple years or at least compete for one. This was more of an offer we couldn't refuse than an indictment of Jake IMO. He was the best option at the time. Cutler is the best option at this time.

Depends on how people interpret the phrase "no cap hit". If people interpret that to mean that Jake will cost no money against the cap, they're 100% wrong. If they interpret it to mean that Denver will break even between what Jake would cost in '07 vs. the dead money that would be there if he's cut, that is probably true. Jake would account for approx. $7+M in '07 though even if he's cut.
That's "no cap hit" if they cut Jake, but $7M is a pretty big chunk of change for a guy not on the roster. IIRC, Griese was close but still didn't have a number that high.

This is why I wondered if there wasn't some reason we could extend him, maybe with some cash incentive up front that would spread out the cap hit a little in case we want to release him down the road.

There's no way they'd do that Popps because he'd be looking a similar or better deal than the one he has currently as he's still the starting QB for one of the top franchises' in football. There's no way Mike selected Jay at 11 for Jake to still be the starter in 2009.

I'm a bit confused on the BVP comments. I don't think there are other teams out there drooling over BVP. I think it's a long shot that he is a strong starting QB in this league.
However, I do think he has a chance of being a very competent back-up. His style is change of pace, he is competitive as hell. He also is a CO boy and staying here must be attractive to him on some level. Think a mobile Kubiak.
I'm not sure why people think he is gone unless it's because he will demand going elsewhere to have a chance at #1.
