U.S. Military Releases Video Showing Zarqawi Unable to Work Gun

Firefighters Target Iraq Gas Complex Blaze
BAGHDAD, Iraq — The U.S. military command Thursday released previously unseen images of a video purportedly posted by Al Qaeda in Iraq's leader, showing him decked out in American tennis shoes and unable to operate his machine gun.
• Click here to watch the Zarqawi video.
Authorities also said 31 "foreign fighters" had been killed since April and 161 Al Qaeda in Iraq leaders were killed or captured since January, seriously undercutting the group's logistical abilities.
CountryWatch: Iraq
The video, discovered in a series of raids in April on purported Al Qaeda in Iraq safe houses in the Youssifiyah area, 12 miles southwest of Baghdad, gave a view of Abu Musab al-Zarqawi that the Jordanian-born militant chose not to show the world, said Maj. Gen. Rick Lynch, spokesman for the U.S. command.
Al-Zarqawi is "very proud of the fact that he can operate this machine gun, and he proclaims that, and all of his close associates are very proud of what Zarqawi does," Lynch said in a briefing in which he played a snippet from the video posted by militants on April 25.

But as the previously unseen video was shown, Lynch mocked al-Zarqawi, suggesting his weapon jammed and he was unable to fix it.
"It's supposed to be automatic fire, he's shooting single shots. Something is wrong with his machine gun, he looks down, can't figure out, calls his friend to come unblock the stoppage and get the weapon firing again," Lynch said.
"This piece you all see as he walks away, he's wearing his black uniform and his New Balance tennis shoes as he moves to this white pickup. And, his close associates around him ... do things like grab the hot barrel of the machine gun and burn themselves," the military spokesman added.
In the version that appeared on the Internet, al-Zarqawi swore allegiance to Usama bin Laden and said any government formed in Iraq would merely be a "stooge." He also mocked the U.S. military in Iraq for what he described as suicides, drug use and mutinies, and warned of worse attacks to come.
Lynch, who described the earlier video as "an act of desperation," declined to specify exactly where or when the unedited material was found.
But he said it was discovered during a number of raids on insurgent safe houses in the Youssifiyah area beginning April 8, and which also stretched slightly north of Baghdad. Those raids led to the deaths of 31 suspected foreign fighters — a group which accounts for 90 percent of the suicide bombers used by Al Qaeda in Iraq.
Lynch said that U.S. operations against al-Zarqawi had dramatically cut the number of suicide attacks in the country from an average of 75 per month to fewer than 25 per month now.
"We believe that he is getting facilitation for foreign fighters and funds out of Syria" and that his focus of operations is currently in the Baghdad area, Lynch said.
"He is focusing his efforts inside of Baghdad. Baghdad is his center of gravity," Lynch said.
That belief was supported by a series of planning documents also seized in the raids in the Youssifiyah area raids, which was used as a staging area for the suicide attacks, he said.
The documents spelled out al-Zarqawi's strategy in Iraq — focusing on the Baghdad area and targeting the Shiite majority while reducing the number of attacks in Sunni Arab areas.
"He is clearly trying to drive a wedge between the sectarian population here inside of Iraq, and he is focused on the Shiite community," said Lynch, referring to one document. "He says that the Shia population in Baghdad is his primary target."

Sounds like a pathetic propoganda piece personally. If he and his aides are so incompetent why haven't they found him?
What I find more interesting is this:
http://www.cnn.com/2006/WORLD/meast/04/30/iraq.ap/index.html
BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) -- President Jalal Talabani met with representatives of seven armed groups and is optimistic they may agree to lay down their weapons, his office said. It was the first time a senior Iraqi official has acknowledged talks with insurgents.
However, Talabani did not identify the groups or specify when and where the meeting took place. The spokesman of one major insurgent group, the Islamic Army in Iraq, said Sunday his organization had not taken part in such a meeting.
Last year, Talabani offered to talk with insurgents, but it was unclear if any took up the offer. U.S. officials have acknowledged meeting Iraqis who had ties to Sunni Arab insurgents but not with representatives of those groups.
American diplomats have also cautioned that any such dialogue could take a long time to end the fighting because of divisions within insurgent ranks, which include Islamic extremists such as al Qaeda in Iraq who show no sign of wanting to end their jihad, or holy war, against the Americans and their Iraqi partners.
It was also unclear whether the seven groups represented a substantial portion of the insurgency. Talabani also did not say whether the insurgents presented their own demands.
"I believe that a deal can be reached with the seven armed groups that visited me," Talabani was quoted as saying. The statement said Talabani made the remarks Saturday during a meeting with fellow Kurds in the Kurdish self-ruled region of northern Iraq.
U.S. Ambassador Zalmay Khalilzad has been anxious to establish a dialogue with insurgents except for Islamic extremists such as al Qaeda in Iraq and Saddam Hussein loyalists. U.S. officials believe a third faction -- mostly nationalistic Sunni Arabs -- might be willing to cut a deal if they feel Iraq's new national unity government serves their interests.
According to the statement, Talabani said al Qaeda in Iraq, led by Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, had declared a "genocide against the Iraqi people."
"But there are groups other than the Saddamists and Zarqawists who joined armed operations to fight the occupation. And we are trying to establish a dialogue with them so they will join the political process," he said.
Talabani's security adviser, Lt. Gen. Wafiq al-Samaraei, told Al-Arabiya television that the dialogue was aimed at driving a wedge between religious zealots and other insurgents.

Of course it a propaganda piece, this conflict as much about shaping the message as it is about armed conflict. Even if it wasn't true, I would have invented a piece that show Al-Qaeda as buffoons and thugs. What America has failed to find a why win/to shape the propaganda war as well as Al-Qaeda. We can sell billions of cigarettes to people but we can not make the jackals look bad.

Spider - it much like dealing with the take down of the NY Mafia, it take time to slowly pull the network apart and turn someone that give access to the decision makers. Like the Mafia it is closed community and US is an outsider. The IC because of many reasons doesn't have the inside sources it needs to take the guys down. It slow process, and can not happen in single TV season like most Americans believe.

Different type of conflict that why guerrilla warfare is such a pain in the butt. No big win, just very small local victories. These guys are hard to tell apart from local population, and high tech solutions only get us so far, you really need to be an old fashion neighborhood cop that knows everyone to be success. The British took about 10 years in Malaysia to end a similar type conflict in the 50s.

Study of Bush's psyche touches a nerve
Julian Borger in Washington
Wednesday August 13, 2003
The Guardian
A study funded by the US government has concluded that conservatism can be explained psychologically as a set of neuroses rooted in "fear and aggression, dogmatism and the intolerance of ambiguity".
As if that was not enough to get Republican blood boiling, the report's four authors linked Hitler, Mussolini, Ronald Reagan and the rightwing talkshow host, Rush Limbaugh, arguing they all suffered from the same affliction.
All of them "preached a return to an idealised past and condoned inequality".
Article continues
Republicans are demanding to know why the psychologists behind the report, Political Conservatism as Motivated Social Cognition, received $1.2m in public funds for their research from the National Science Foundation and the National Institutes of Health.
The authors also peer into the psyche of President George Bush, who turns out to be a textbook case. The telltale signs are his preference for moral certainty and frequently expressed dislike of nuance.
"This intolerance of ambiguity can lead people to cling to the familiar, to arrive at premature conclusions, and to impose simplistic cliches and stereotypes," the authors argue in the Psychological Bulletin.
One of the psychologists behind the study, Jack Glaser, said the aversion to shades of grey and the need for "closure" could explain the fact that the Bush administration ignored intelligence that contradicted its beliefs about Iraq's weapons of mass destruction.
The authors, presumably aware of the outrage they were likely to trigger, added a disclaimer that their study "does not mean that conservatism is pathological or that conservative beliefs are necessarily false".
Another author, Arie Kruglanski, of the University of Maryland, said he had received hate mail since the article was published, but he insisted that the study "is not critical of conservatives at all". "The variables we talk about are general human dimensions," he said. "These are the same dimensions that contribute to loyalty and commitment to the group. Liberals might be less intolerant of ambiguity, but they may be less decisive, less committed, less loyal."
But what drives the psychologists? George Will, a Washington Post columnist who has long suffered from ingrained conservatism, noted, tartly: "The professors have ideas; the rest of us have emanations of our psychological needs and neuroses."

For one thing, humans (straights too) don't like hicks who rationalize murder.
Besides, you interact with gays - you just don't know it, even though they know your type quite well.

I ain't the one bragging about endangering myself, my child, and others with my rig...
There's a fine definition of "idiotic" right there.

For one thing, homosexuals don't like hicks who rationalize the murder of a gay man. It's kinda like you (analogously) claiming that African-American victims of the KKK were in some ways responsible for their own deaths, and th wondering why you have no black friends... hey you are the expert on the homosexuals lin of thinking , not that there is anything wrong with that of course ....
Besides, you interact with gays - you just don't know it, even though they know your type quite well. yeah but bantering words with you on a MB is pretty safe , not realy interacting .......
I ain't the one bragging about endangering myself, my child, and others with my rig... Well it is important to have hobby .....
There's a fine definition of "idiotic" right there.Oh thats ok W*GS , I dont hold you being an Idiot against you ........ Kinda miffed about that loan you wont lend me but hey .......
At least we now know that driving a rig is so easy that an 11-year-old can do it, and do it well...
