The Cutler Scenario
by minibronco

“With the eleventh pick in the draft traded from the St. Louis Rams, the Denver Broncos select Jay Cutler, quarterback from Vanderbilt.”

Oh my goodness. Just another terrible pick, courtesy of Head Coach Mike Shanahan and company. I left my hotel room in dismay, cursed the elevator, and pulled on a door that said “PUSH.”

Why would the Denver Broncos administration, comfortably sitting in a spot to draft a quality wide receiver in Chad Jackson or Santonio Holmes, look to trade up four spots and snatch a quarterback instead? I mean, come on. We have a Pro-Bowl caliber quarterback in the peak of his career, and here we go flushing another first-round pick that could have been special down the toilet. And plus, most of us honestly had never heard Jay Cutler’s name before the NFL Combine.

Why, Shanny? Why?

Thirty hours later, I sit before my computer, excited about this pick, excited about this man, excited about the year that is to come.

First, his credentials.

Jay Cutler was named the SEC Player of the Year last year, averaging 279 passing yards per game over the last season. Vanderbilt didn’t win a lot, but it was mainly because of the Commodore’s poor pass protection and weak front line. He is a very good football player, and an even better leader in the locker room. Many old-time quarterbacks love this kid because of his poise, leadership, and style of play. His meteoric rise began during the postseason and just about exploded during the Senior Bowl practices and NFL Combine, where he offered to work out in front of the professional scouts. He is definitely physically talented to become a starting quarterback in the league, if not mentally as well. He has the ability to make plays with both his arm and legs. When he strides into throws, he can get rid of ball quickly and throws with good accuracy and zip. He is a smart young man who learns well and consistently has shown patience to come off the primary receiver to find the second and third receiver. He does a very good job of keeping his head up and eyes down the field when flushed from the pocket, which helps him to find a man to throw to when on the move.

Now, why Denver drafted him.

Many people say that the Broncos drafted Jay Cutler to give Jake Plummer a wake-up call—a call that the franchise has been trying to get through for the past couple of years. However, this might not be the case. Shanahan knows that the quarterback is the most important position in football, and a strong one is vital for competition in the playoffs. The selection of Jay Cutler, arguably the best of the top three quarterbacks in the draft, just plainly ensures a bright future for the organization—ten more years of playoffs.

The Denver Broncos already have Rod Smith, Ashley Lelie, and Darius Watts. We have learned in the past with different quarterbacks that it is more important to have a solid arm to deliver the passes than having the hands that catch them. With the addition of Javon Walker, an established threat (contract problems with GB but nonetheless effective), in the draft, the Broncos could afford to select the heir apparent to Plummer in the first round.

Mel Kiper Jr. loves it. Everyone loves it. I love it.

Generally agree, but Javon is coming into his 5th year (I think 27 yrs old). There is no reason to think he is on the decline - to the contrary, he is entering his most productive years.

Ahh, misstated sentence that was. That should be contract problems. I'm going to make the change right now.

I don't think there is a "message" at all to Plummer, unless it is a reminder that there is an end to all things. I think Plummer will be the man for two more years, and then I think he will give way to Cutler. Overall, good article.

All you have to do is watch the film of the Vandy - Tenn. It will convince the most hardened skeptic that this kid is THE REAL DEAL!

The way he carries himself on the field , his poise and moxie and his incredible arm and ability to lay it right between the numbers anywhere on the field.

But to realize he played against the best college defenses week in and week out with that lousy Vandy team with no offensive line and still was competitive speaks volumes to his maturity and ability to handle adversity that will be so critical as a Denver Bronco QB in the kind of microscope we all put him under.

I think he is one kid that could step in and pull a Rothelisburger with our excellent team behind him mid way through this year if necessary should somthing happen to Jake (God forbid).

I really do like Jake even though I point out his lack of fundamental accuracy which is a well known limitation. He has many admirable skills and is a great guy and excellent teammate.

But ther is jsut no denying what a truly gifted francshie typoe QB can do for a team and while Shanahan deserves soem kid of MEdal for pulling a 14-4 season out of last years team with teh kind of conservation play calling we used in the second half of games,

Having a QB that can go out and we expect him to dominate rather than hope he doesn't throw too many INTs or give away the game will bring a whole different feeling to each season.

Jake is due a pile of money next year which he will never see unless we win the Super Bowl, fair or not that is the tough life of an NFL QB in a town like Denver where second best isn't good enough for long.

I hope he can win that SB this year and then perahsp trun the reins over to the new kid and ride of into the sunset a winner. Jake may even want to play for a new team for a couple years before hanging up his cleats or be contnet to call it a day at 33.

Either way we at least have a viable opton for the future and it looks very promising indeed.

Nicely put. The ideal turnout would be Cutler = Roethlisberger, but we can't just dump Jake.

Whatever floats your boat. ;)

More than two years, unless an injury occurs (knock on wood) or a mental breakdown happens. I see Cutler starting in 2010.

I personally see Plummer as a very class act, so I think that he'll be willing to restructure or take a pay cut in order to stay on a winning team that wants him. I'm sure he does want to start and he would. I'm also sure he doesn't want to go back to a team like he had in Arizona.

That's right. Plummer is a class act (ref. Lelie situation). Cutler is very lucky to have a player like Jake to learn under.

Jake has given his all. He has never said he was perfect, and I will cuss out anyone that trashes him except Taco...Ha!...the trump card has it's priveleges....

It doesn't take alot to whine as a WR. I didn't know Lelie and Walker were working out at the same site.
