Steve Burton, of CBS4 Boston, reports New England Patriots QB Doug Flutie plans to inform Patriots' head coach Bill Belichick Monday, May 1, he is retiring from the NFL. Unless Belichick talks him out of it, Flutie is headed to the broadcast booth.

Ashley Fox, of the Philadelphia Inquirer, reports Philadelphia Eagles head coach Andy Reid discussed the team's new defensive line. Reid said, "We have attempted to solidify (the defensive line) and give ourselves the opportunity to get a little more pass rush than what we had last year. We can mix players in there that can rotate. . . . As long as they all stay healthy and work as hard as they need to work, it's a win-win situation." The team added DL Darren Howard during free agency and drafted DL Brodrick Bunkley in the first-round of the NFL Draft.

Ed Bouchette and Gerry Dulac, of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, reports the Pittsburgh Steelers broke off trade talks for Atlanta Falcons RB T.J. Duckett. The Steelers offered a 2006 fifth-round draft pick, but the Falcons wanted a third-round pick in the 2007 NFL Draft.

Larry O'Rourke, of the Morning Call, reports Philadelphia Eagles OT Winston Justice was asked if he could handle waiting at least one season to play if OT Tra Thomas and OT Jon Runyan were healthy during the 2006 season. Justice responded, "I don't think it'll take a year to get me on the field, even if they're healthy. I'm confident in my ability. I believe I'll contribute to the team." Head coach Andy Reid added, "He's going to come in and compete. He's got a couple of good players ahead of him. They're not going to lay down. But it'll create competition."

Cotsonika, of the Detroit Free Press, reports Detroit Lions president Matt Millen said the team had LB Ernie Sims, the team's first-round pick taken No. 9 overall, rated as the fourth- or fifth-best prospect in the whole draft. Millen added the team had him rated higher than DB Michael Huff, who was taken by the Oakland Raiders No. 7 overall.

Denver Broncos head coach Mike Shanahan discussed the flexibility in roles WR Brandon Marshall can play with the team. Shanahan said, "Brandon Marshall is 6-foot-4 and a half, almost 6-foot-5, 230 pounds. We think he has the flexibility to play on the outside and inside. He could be an H-back tight end, wide receiver." Shanahan added, "We think he's a good athlete, and he has played defensive back one year and he led the team in tackles when one of his safeties went down. We feel like he has a lot of value."

Shanahan added, "He's a punt returner and kickoff returner, so it's always a plus. But we brought him in here not strictly for special teams. We brought him in to compete with our wide receivers because we thought with his speed and some of the plays he made that there was a lot of value there at that pick."

Denver Broncos rookie TE Tony Scheffler feels his blocking is suitable for the next level, but he said he needs to work on it. "It's something that I like to do, I love to do," said Scheffler. "I love to get my nose in there, and it's not going to be an issue here. Like you said, a lot of the people (said) that was a knock on me, and that's something I will come in and hope to put to rest and be a consistent blocker on the next level." Scheffler said he has some experience as a long snapper as well, but said he will contribute wherever needed - tight end, long snapping or even special teams.

Denver Broncos WR Brandon Marshall talked about playing with WR Rod Smith and learning from wide receivers coach Steve Watson and head coach Mike Shanahan during his teleconference. Marshall said, "I was just talking to my advisor and my high school coach. Just to be able to play behind (Broncos WR) Rod Smith and just learn from him, I mean that is always a blessing. It will be a much easier transition for me because I have a veteran, a guy who hasn't missed one workout in the offseason throughout his years in Denver. So to be there seeing his work ethic and learn from him and (Wide Receivers) Coach (Steve) Watson and (Head) Coach (Mike) Shanahan and the great organization of the Denver Broncos is a blessing. It can't be better. Everything happens for a reason."

Denver Broncos rookie QB Jay Cutler discussed his strengths and weaknesses at a press conference Sunday, April 30. "I think my strengths are I can move in the pocket, I've got a strong arm and have played against some very good defenses. I think playing in the SEC for four years is going to help me in the NFL. I've overcome a lot of adversity playing at Vanderbilt. We took some tough losses and had to bounce back week after week. Everyone wants to talk about me throwing off my back and how poor my footwork is. I think that has to be addressed, but I think that getting into this system and this offensive line and having the protection and the pocket there, that stuff is all going to come naturally."
