Best-case 3-round draft scenario:
#1 – Broncos trade this year’s #15, next year’s #1 & #2, and Ashley Lelie for Green Bay’s #5 pick and Javon Walker. With the #5 pick, Broncos select Vernon Davis. Sucks to lose next year’s picks, but immediate firepower gained in two areas of need.
#2a – LenDale White slips all the way #37, Broncos take all of three seconds to get their card up to the podium. (substitute this name with Laurence Maroney, and I’m just as happy.)
#2b – Matthias Kiwanuka slides, slides, slides all the way down to the #61 slot. Broncos get their edge rusher…. (Tamba Hali would do nicely here as well)
#3 – Jason Allen also slides due to teams being freaked out about his degenerative hip condition.
Worst-case 3-round draft scenario
#1 – Jay Cutler is the highest remaining player on Mike Shanahan’s draft board – Shanahan remains true to his board, oblivious to the fact that we were only one game away from an NFL championship last year. Ghosts of Tommy Maddox…
#2a – With LenDale White, Tamba Hali, Matthias Kiwanuka AND Laurence Maroney still on the board, the Broncos select…. Darnell Bing, strong safety. Never mind the fact that Lynch can still play strong safety for another few years, we need a free safety….
#2b – Leonard Pope, Anthony Fasano, and Joe Klopfenstein are still on the board at this point, so Shanahan decided to wait until the next pick before getting a tight end. Instead, he selects the best edge rusher left on the board, which is Mark Anderson from Alabama.
#3 – Of course, Pope, Fasano, and Klopfenstein all go off the board immediately before this pick, so Shanahan changes tack and goes for his other area of need, wide receiver. The best one left is Derek Hagan, so Shanahan takes… Jason Avant.
Best case: Davis (TE), Walker (WR), White (RB), Kiwanuka (DE), Allen (FS)
Worst case: Cutler (QB), Bing (SS), Anderson (DE), Avant (WR)
Maybe I’m a pessimistic person by nature, but I get the feeling that our draft is going to resemble the latter more than the former.
