Krieger: Terrapin tempts Broncos
Rocky Mountain News

Musings for a Monday morning on possibilities, both real and imagined . . .
• The Broncos are not doing much to disguise their fondness for draft prospect Vernon Davis, a 6-foot-3, 250-pound tight end expected to be among the first six picks of the NFL draft.

• A variety of sources in a variety of places say if the Broncos trade up, it will be to get Davis. The Broncos understand they would have to trade up to at least the fifth pick because the 49ers are widely expected to take Davis at No. 6 if he gets that far.

• The former Maryland Terrapin is a remarkable athlete and pass catcher, one of those rare 250-pounders to break 4.4 in the 40 at the combine (by one stopwatch, anyway). If the Broncos make a move for him, it will be an attempt to replicate the playmaking of Shannon Sharpe.

• Cecil Lammey of Football Guys.com says Davis' closest NFL comparison is Alge Crumpler, who had 65 catches for 877 yards last year, leading the Falcons in both categories.

• If the Broncos stay where they are, at Nos. 15 and 22, the popular consensus at No. 15 seems to be wide receiver Chad Jackson of Florida.

• ESPN's Mel Kiper Jr. has Jackson rated just ahead of Ohio State's Santonio Holmes as the best wideout in the draft; Lammey has Holmes just ahead of Jackson.

• The main rap against Jackson has nothing to do with Jackson. The history of highly touted Gators wideouts in the NFL is underwhelming.

• It includes Taylor Jacobs (No. 44 to Washington in 2003); Jabar Gaffney (No. 33 to Houston in '02); Reche Caldwell (No. 48 to San Diego in '02); Travis Taylor (No. 10 to Baltimore in '00); Jacquez Green (No. 34 to Tampa Bay in 1998); Ike Hilliard (No. 7 to the Giants in '97); and Reidel Anthony (No. 16 to Tampa Bay in '97).

• If few of these names ring a bell, you have put your finger on the problem.

• In fact, the Broncos are familiar with the Florida Flop Phenomenon. Nineteen years ago, they drafted Ricky Nattiel at No. 27. He had 121 catches.

• In his career.

• The other popular scenario at wide receiver is a trade for the Packers' disgruntled Javon Walker. Walker has the advantage of being from Florida State, not Florida.

• Jackson's closest NFL comparison, according to Lammey?

• Why, Walker, of course.

• Two weeks out, Kiper has the Broncos staying where they are and taking Jackson at No. 15 and running back DeAngelo Williams of Memphis at No. 22.

Parrots say what they are taught to say: it is repetitive, unoriginal and adds little to the development of vison, panache, elan, verve, or any deep thought. Sort of like a Chef fan.....

So using an asinine e-mail to write two columns didn't work, I guess it's time to copy Jim Armstrong's column style. But what would you expect from the worst columnist in town?

You suck. You've always suck. When you are all dead and someone read the things you write today they will wonder why all of the people of this era were so frigging stupid.

Dear Denver Broncos and Pat Bowlen, (cc the stupid writers guild)
Please. For the love of God. Hire the Orange Mane's capable and available staff writers. We'll work for peanuts. All we ask is consideration for seats in the draft room, an Orangemane stadium booth, gas for our bus and consideration for trips flying to away games. We promise not to act like act like Raiders fans or Chief fans. Since Chargers don't have any fans we can't include them because we actually do exist.

Why the grunt, Mock? The talk of VD reminding you of your youth when that flirting honey wouldn't put out? :~ohyah!:

What I want to know is what Shanahan would do if he had a pick and VD and VYoung were both available. What would you do, Shanny......what would you do? ???

That means we don't take Walker at 15. I don't think the Broncos have EVER taken a consensus pick in the Shanahan era.

I like Vernon a lot, but I'm not sure they we're going to move up for him. We have a lot of other needs, and that leaves us with a late-second rounder to address another position. I don't see us doing it.

#22(800 pts, maybe more with the "deep draft")
+lelie(#18 = 900 points plus 3 years of experience = another 3-400)
that puts us giving out well say 2100 points for #6(1600)+#37(560) so we throw in a fourth and that leaves us with
#6 - vernon davis
#15-Chad Jackson/trade down lol more trading
#37-best DE available(lawson,hali,kiwi)
#61-best DT available(Wroten,Wright,Watson, or mccargo)
leaving us with two 4s, a 5 and a 6.
not likely because that is a lot of trading but i think that would be a nice scenario

Uh, Lelie isn't worth anything like that value wise. At best, he'd let us move up 3-5 slots. AT BEST.

This is nothing more than Kreiger's lame variation of Bob Kravitz's old "Thoughts, Myths and Half-Truths" column.

The difference being that Kravitz's column was actually witty and informative.

i figured my logic on his point value was off but i think we bronco fans undervalue him, if one were san francisco and had went from jerry rice and TO to brandon lloyd and arnez battle and now antonio bryant to arnez battle, one would be pretty excited to get ashley lelie. but this is the york family so i have no Fin clue, they could think lelie is the next TO, the next jerry rice, or just another arnez battle.

Antonio bryant & arnez battle aren't terrible. I would say A. Bryant is just as good as lelie. It would be a steal to get a 2nd for Lelie. Players, in general, do not increase in value after being in the league.

Dear Denver Broncos organization,
Why has there been no article written about Floyd Little on your spanky new website....ever? Did you want us to take on this assignment? I bet old Floyd would love to come down to our bus, drink a beer and tell us the God's honest truth about a lot of things Broncos fans don't know about. What do you say? How about we get the ball rolling for you. I bet we could get Sammy Winder down there too. Don't worry. We'll be happy to send pictures.

EDIT: The Mane isn't a local or national media. It's International baby!

Yet Deltha moved us up 7 as benched player that was switched from Defense to Offense b/c he couldn't get right. Mean while, a player that has led the league in yards per catch, has a 1000 yard season under his belt, and would immediately become "Team B's" best WR is only worth 3 or 4 spots. Pffft, leave the trade talks for the grown ups!

Ash plus the 15 (NOT 22) would move us up to about #6. Again, this is b/c of San Fran's needs coupled with Ash being a good player.

Deltha did not move us up 7 spots, we had to throw in a 4th in addition to get the deal done.

Yet 90% of them get paid more money on their 2nd contracts... how is it that they don't increase in value??? Oh, b/c a team that trades for a guy like Culpepper has to come up with 7mil per season. Now I understand.

It's funny how people always point to guys like Edge James and Shaun Alexander and say they weren't tradeable or they were only worth a 2nd round pick. People don't understand that if they were coming over for 1 mil per season EVERY team in the NFL would have been offering up 1st and 2nd round picks for their services. In this case, Ash is playing out his last year and will probably be paid around 1.5 mil on the season. Best believe that San Fran will try to sign him long term by offering around 7 mil up front and 20 over 5. IMO, he's worth a lot more than that. Too bad we never learned to or how to use him!
