View Full Version : Who are the Draft Gurus Wrong About

Just for fun, who do you think the "draft Experts" have rated wrong?
I'll start it off with one:
1. Derrick Hagan - In know he dropped some balls at the combine but he is the all time leader in pass receptions in the PAC 10. Seems to me a few good ones have come out of that league in the past. He has over 1000 yards each of the last three seasons with three different QBs. He runs great routes and despite what a couple of gurus (who obviously haven't ween him play much) he is a good to very good blocker. Certainly not a top ten pick, but shouldn't be kicked clear down the boards due to a couple of drops at the combine.

Mathias Kiwanuka. He was injured for most of this year and it's flat out asinine that what happened at the Senior Bowl, and all this jargon is making him drop that low. I think he'll be one of the better ends to come out of this draft. I don't see how it's possible for a guy to go from top ten talent, to late-second round based on one week.

3. Wroten - Guy has some character issues, but he will make a very good DT in the NFL!!

im a diehard lsu fan and watched wroten throughout the year, this year was really his breakout year. i never saw any character issues on the field(or off) like taunting, etc. the possession thing was disgusting to watch but he showed deep remorse(i think it was sincere but my vision is a little blurred obviously) and sed he would learn from it and its obviously hurting his previously first round stock so hopefully hes learned from it.
4. i dont know why lawson isnt higher really. i mean he is such a raw talent who has just begun to prove himself.

he needs to add to his frame but i think lawson has better value at 22, of course if he gets past say 48 we should prob make a move to get to him depending on who has doen what in front of us. id prefer him over wimbley tho, wed just have to be patient

Eric Winston Tackle out of Miami- was voted the best offence line player in the ACC this year (not Ferguson), has mobility (former TE, 40-Time: 4.94) and size (6-6 Weight: 310) yet is now a second round pick, should be a top 10 pick.

Gotta look at needs as well tho. If someone needed OL more, id bet they would take him.

good point ludo. i think that brad smith is getting an incredibly raw deal. im not sure where he is currently rated but he ran a 4.46 and led in most of the combine events. he reminds me a lot of vince young in being a tall(6 4 i think) running threat but he has a better throwing motion. his only problem was his supporting cast i thot. i also think brett basanez was a good QB but i think he is a little too short(?).

Rod Wright, The guy was the best DT coming out, he decided to stay and had a down preformance year. He will be available with our 2nd round pick imo, although he should be in the first round. We need this guy.

ya i like rod wright too. i didnt follow him too much this year but i know he had a big part in stopping reggie bush this year. i think ed hinkel out of iowa would be a decent pick in the 6th or 7th. he was hurt this year but is a good player. him and clinton soloman made for a very good receiving duo.

Mike Hass will have a much more impressive NFL career than either Holmes or Moss.
VY will not be a starter in the NFL five years from now unless he goes the Randle El route.

Both Detroit and Arizona need offense line help, but will go with sexy pick instead. I wouldn't be surprise if the Texans take him in the top of the second. Kubiak will remember another former TE that worked out for him at LT.

I would have to agree. He had a mark on him for the drug charges but since those are gone now I think he will go higher.

Tamba Hali is a great example of a guy who's getting downgraded over his measurables. He should be the second rated DE on the board by a clear margin.

I still see him the #2 DE on the board. Just alittle small.

Vernon Davis. Scout's have him rated as the #1 TE prospect when in reality he's the #2 overall prospect on the board. (perhaps tied with Mario).

I still think this is a great opportunity for denver to draft an elite tackle or guard(hey maybe even mangold!) that can play in denver's system and take this line from good to domination.

we should address immediate needs immediately. i say that whoever the picks are we need WR,DE,DT,&TE in no particular order.we can always find guys on day two(raiola, setterstrom, etc.)our weaknesses are at the four positions about, i think if our three of our first four picks adress those positions then we will be ok. TE would be ok with somebody late like david thomas, tim day, or jeff king

I don't believe it was just one game. I remember him getting neutralized by Daryn Colledge when they played Boise.

I think Kiwi suffered the whole season from that cheap shot that Virginia put on him. That really hindered him. He was an absolute stud in 04, he had 11.5 sacks and 25 TFL.
Kiwi is going to be a very good player in the league. I would love to have him at 22 after taking White at 15.

Are you saying that Bush isn't the #1 overall player in this draft?
Vernon Davis would be higher if he had anything resembling NFL level route running skills. Terms like "mechanical" and "stiff" are not what agile, fast, TEs want used to describe their routes.

No. I said that Davis is the #2 overall player in a tie with Mario. I think Bush is the obvious #1.
I'll deal with his "stiff" routes. You still can't cover him with a LB, and most TEs need to work on their routes coming out. If you want to see stiff routes, I would watch Pope. Marcedes is the only TE who's routes are pretty solid coming out, but he's nowhere near the class of Davis.
youcandoit1687
04-16-2006, 11:34 AM
his routes will come easily if he has that type of speed.i play TE and if u come at a LB running a 4.38 hes gonna start backpedaling no matter what, its that simple.thats definitely not an issue with davis, theyll just have him work on his stopping, cutting, and acceleration in camps.no biggy

O.K., saying that he was perhaps on par with Mario, after definitively saying saying that he was #2, made me think you thought Williams was the best and he was second. Thanks for the clarification.
As for his routes, I'd agree, its not a huge concern, some decent coaching and he'll be fine, but its still work he needs to do, which makes me personally rank him below a few other guys who need less technical work. Bush and Williams obviously, but also Ferguson, AJ Hawk, and Leinart. I think Davis is on par with Vince Young, an amazing physical talent who promises to really be something special, but will need a little coaching before being that dominant player.
He's definately something special at the TE position though. I'd be all for the Broncos trading up after him if we can give the 15th overall and our 2nd, I just wouldn't spend both firsts on him, so that means we'd need him to slide down to around 10 or 11, which probably won't happen.
youcandoit1687
04-16-2006, 12:09 PM
10 or 11 could happen at which point i believe we must pounce but i dont like spending the two 1s on him/anybody unless somebody is giving a 1 or something for that but not a pick in the 4-7 region, id say if he gets past buffalo, we start calling, detroit and arizona are both rebuilding teams so they could use the extra picks. they also dont have glaring TE needs. arizona should be set on offense(unless they go QB) becuase of edge fitz boldin. detroit has three WRs and 8 ****ty QBs, they dont deserve another offensive weapon. im not sure why there isnt more talk of buffalo going TE, they suck in general on pass offense(im not a lee evans fan) and their run O would be greatly helped by VD.so isay we trade with arizona or maybe st. louis if theyre interested but they might want VD too.

Ends under 6'3" generally have trouble in the NFL, so there is good reason to be concerned about Hali's measurables as he is only 6'2". The only exceptions are usually guys like Freeney who have freakish speed, and Hali's speed would be considered marginal for an end even if he were 6'5". His production and effort can't be overlooked, but I can see why teams would be hesitant to take him before the 2nd round.

He still had 9.5 sacks even with the injury, so it's not like his production fell off the charts. I agree, people over thinking it with Kiwi.

I disagree. He has always been a raw talent, but the thing that is pushing him down is his work ethic and disappearing act versus quality competition. He went to High School here in INDY with fellow BC OL Trueblood. The Cathedral coaches were not too impressed with his work ethic and desire to play football. He is the one DE that screams BUST to me.

I can't believe how much grief Lendale white has taken over his injured Hamstring. He's still by far the 2nd best back in the draft, by far. Not only that he's a prototype NFL back... (as opposed to being made for the college game)
