View Full Version : 'Nothing gringo on May 1'
http://www.cnn.com/2006/WORLD/americas/04/14/mexico.boycott.ap/index.html
MEXICO CITY, Mexico (AP) -- "The Great American Boycott" is spreading south of the border, as activists call for Mexicans to boycott U.S. businesses on May 1.
The protest is timed to coincide with a May 1 boycott of work and shopping in the United States that also has been dubbed "A Day Without Immigrants." The boycott, which grew out of huge pro-migrant marches across the United States, is designed to pressure Congress to legalize millions of undocumented people.
Mexican unions, political and community groups, newspaper columnists and even some Mexican government offices have joined the call in recent days.
"Remember, nothing gringo on May 1," advises one of the many e-mails being circulated among Internet users in Mexico.
"On May 1, people shouldn't buy anything from the interminable list of American businesses in Mexico," reads another. "That means no Dunkin' Donuts, no McDonald's, Burger King, Starbucks, Sears, Krispy Kreme or Wal-Mart."
For some it's a way to express anti-U.S. sentiment, while others see it as part of a cross-border, Mexican-power lobby.
In some cases, advocates incorrectly identified firms as American -- Sears stores in Mexico, for example, have been owned by Mexican billionaire Carlos Slim since 1997.
And ironically, the protest targets the U.S. business community, which is one of the strongest supporters of legalization or guest-worker programs.
"At the end of the day, boycotting would only hurt corporations that are backing what people want done in the immigration bill," said Larry Rubin, CEO of the American Chamber of Commerce in Mexico. Rubin is encouraging people to write to their legislators instead of boycotting.
Roberto Vigil of the California-based immigrants rights group Hermandad Mexicana said his group has asked some of Mexico's largest labor unions to back the protest. Elias Bermudez, president of the Phoenix-based Immigrants Without Borders, is actively promoting the boycott in interviews with Mexican radio and television stations.
Mexican groups are responding. Pablo Gonzalez, spokesman for one of Mexico's largest labor unions, the Federation of Revolutionary Workers and Farmers, said his organization will support a boycott against "at least four of the most important U.S. firms, among them Wal-Mart," Mexico's largest retailer.
Two other major labor groups -- the telephone workers' and auto workers' unions -- also are expected to join, Vigil said.
Even parts of the Mexican government have signed onto the protest.
"We are not going to be buying any products from the United States on May 1," said Lolita Parkinson, national coordinator for the National Board of State Offices on Attention for Migrants, which represents state government-run migrant aid offices.
For some, the boycott is fueled not just by debate on the immigration bill, but by long-standing resentment over the perceived mistreatment of Mexicans in the United States.
"We want to show the power we have as Mexicans," said Carlos Chavez y Pacho, vice president of the chamber of commerce in Piedras Negras, across from Eagle Pass, Texas. Chavez y Pacho is also urging Mexicans not to shop in U.S. border cities on May 1, in part to protest what he calls arrogant behavior by U.S. customs officials and border officers.
Rafael Ruiz Harrell, who writes a column in the Mexico City newspaper Metro, predicted the boycott could give rise to a broader, pan-Latino movement.
"If we could get all of Latin America, for one day, to leave the U.S. firms without customers, we would be sending the kind of clear message they seem incapable of understanding," he wrote.

I was willing to support the idea of working w/ undocumented workers to find a workable solution. One major rub is how do we reconcile allowing those who bypassed the legal immigration system while serving some justice to those who are going through the interminable process of dealing with US immigration bureaucracy? I don't know, but I was willing to work on it. But they went and fvcked up my commute so my position is to ship'em out. La Migra B!tches!
Step 1. We absolutely need to establish a national language and insist that all immigrants develop a working knowledge of the American language.
Step 2. Assimilation. You're coming here, you adapt to our culture not vice versa. I go to Mexico, I adapt. I learn Spanish. I go to Italy, I adapt, I learn Italian. You want your culture, fine. But don't expect to change American life to fit what was normative in your birth country. Remember dipsh!t...you left your home country for a reason. You came to America for a reason and it wasn't because it was just like the place you left. Dumbasses.

Maybe they think that if they don't buy ammerican products for one day, it will cripple our economy. So what, if they don't buy their gas on the 1st, they'll be in line at the gas station on the 2nd. What a bunch of arrogant a$$holes.
What really irks me more than anything else is their belief that we OWE them legal status after breaking our laws to get into the US.
and that's what i have to say 'bout that!
So, in a span of one month, Hispanics will have taken off 3 days: April 10, May 1, and May 5.
"Don't worry honey (Americans) we'll respect you in the morning." ;) Nothing like being raped by a bunch of illegal immigrants. It's high time we Americans start rising up against this disrespectful abuse of our laws and Constitution.

I've always maintained the following position in regards to protesters in DC
You're not going to get more support for your position from those who already agree with you, you're not going to change the minds of those who disagree with you, you're pissing off everyone in the middle who are going to be the ones to cast the deciding votes for or against your position. Leave me alone and write an op-ed piece. When I'm driving home, my sole focus, ambition, and desire is to get home after a long day of work, crack a cold beer and catch the game with dinner. Fvcking that up is the sure fire way to convince me your opposition is where my support belongs.
Generally, I support the idea that people willing and able to bust their asses to make a better life for themselves and their children should be encouraged. But those aforementioned folks are being co-opted by the professional protest forces whose pay is directly correlated to how much their mug ends up on tv. Those professional protest forces are alienating people just like me by demonstrating an arrogance and general disregard for our country's laws, customs, history, and culture. Demonstrate a measure of humility and plead your case in terms of desire to make a better life and willingness to work for it and the PR campaign will find more supporters but they've determined that making this a wedge issue is the way to go...they're dead wrong. At the end of the day illegals don't have the right to vote and they aren't American citizens afforded the same rights and priveleges associated with being such and therefore politicians have no fear of alienating that particular voting bloc.

Exactly.
I understand that as the U.S. we're one of the most desireable places to come start a new life.
That being said, why SHOULDN'T we have some sort of a stipulation that forces residents of our country to have a working knowledge and understanding of the language? It's only going to help those immigrants obtain better jobs, become more respected in the country's eyes, and integrate into functioning members of our society.
Time to make a national language and force people to adhere. Freedom is a privilege, not a right

Well, it's shades of the sixties , all over again. In my humble opinion, the president has let us down on the immigration issue, in a major way I might add. That said , the bottom line is:
-the mexicans presently residing in this country (legally) , I have no problem with them. The mexicans (or anyone else for that matter) who are in this country illegally, are just that, ILLEGAL. They have absolutely NO business being in this country
-Second, WHY do the illegals want to be "pardoned" now and forego the normal immigration requirements when:
*Phillipino decent immigrants, some waited over 20 years to finally become cititzens. Korean and Chinese immigrants wait on average any where from 8 on up to about 15 years. ETC...ETC...ETC...... WHY are the Mexican illegals SPECIAL and do they deserve Special treatment. NO>NO>NO.
Remedy: Shore up the border....NOW>NOW.NOW>and NOW again.
-Round them up and boot them once the border is shored up.
I am thoroughly pissed off with both sides of the aisle at all levels of our government. This is occuring for various reasons, however, the bottom line is the reason dejour, VOTES>VOTES>VOTES. Dispicable to say the least, and I am embarassed "W" has allowed this to happen. He has let us down on the issue of immigration, AND , if I were able, I'd vote him out of the white house instantly based on his spineless rhetoric with respect to the issue of illegal immigration. My question to the president: WHICH law can I go out and break and be issued a pardon by you and your cohorts? It's a sad day boys, I've served the standing Commander in Chiefs for the last 28 years, and I've never been more embarassed in my life at how spineless he is on this issue. Really setting a bad example to say the least. I want HIM to go tell the Phillipino immigrant who has waited TWENTY-THREE YEARS to become a citizen of the good old US of A that this is fair. If he were to ask me to do try to explain it? I'd spit on his shoe in a second....dman

That's good to know.
I was talking more along the lines of the illegals that are here already (although that seems pointless as they would be incarcerated if they stepped forward).
As far as the Legal residents, I think there is a serious problem with the naturalization process.
I work for western union, and all day long I'm calling customers across the country. In places like southern california, new jersey, south florida, and brooklyn, I am on the phone with people that have SERIOUS issues when it comes to speaking and or comprehending the english language. Obviously the majority of my customers speak passable english, but I'm talking about the other group right now. We're talking store owners, clerks, bookeepers, cashiers, managers.....I'll introduce myself and proceed to try and carry a conversation with them. They don't understand a word that I'm saying. Spanish speaking, puerto rican, russian, middle eastern, german speaking...half of my day is spent with a translator from our Tech support group explaining how to work with western union equipment.
I'm not angry about any of this, but I see a trend that definitely raises the alert flags. Citizens (i'm guessing, you probably need to be a citizen to own a business) that can't speak or understand the english language..... I guess it does bother me more than I thought. I'm all for helping people to learn the language, but the same people I've been talking to for the past year haven't made any progress.
Maybe the process through which immigrant's abilities are judged should become more of a challenge, because it seems like an awful lot of people out there aren't getting it.

In hindsight I can where my posts may have misrepresented my intentions. This issue certainly does generate a passion among all of us. Personally, I think the greatest inner turmoil is for immigrants (particularly Latino immigrants) who came to this country by legal means. Their wait and "playing by the rules" is being ultimately disrespected. At least that's how my Hispanic family members feel.
I realize that not everyone is waving Mexican flags. I feel that if more American flags were waved and if those organizing the protests would promote an agenda of maintaining culture while embracing the American culture (language and loyalty to the U.S.) there would be more sympathy. I do not feel that deportation is practical. Unfortunately, if more "boycotts" are planned it is only going to alienate the very support the movement is intending to garner. It could backfire in a major way.
You're cool, ant ... props to you and again I apologize profusely for offending you in any way.

It's all good bro. Look I can't speak for all those young kids waving the maxican flags. I can tell you when I was young, I was all about having the mexican flag in my car and all. I was born and raised in cheyenne, wy USA. Only been to tijuana and nogales with my parents to shop. But having a mexican flag was the cool thing to do. Didn't mean I pledged my allegance to mexico. Maybe some of this is what is happening here. I don't know. I admit them having mexican flags really didn't make sense. I thought it was dumb.
It's all good bro. Look I can't speak for all those young kids waving the maxican flags. I can tell you when I was young, I was all about having the mexican flag in my car and all. And it very well could be because those kids don't know any different. It's the "fly the Mexico flag above an upside down America flag" that incites everyone ... that is done intentionally and those students know better. I'd like to see more of the march organizers speak out against such atrocities.

Yeah, it pissed me off also. I do believe some of the immigrants couldn't care less about our country. They should be round up and sent back with the ones collecting welfare. The others are hard working people who wanted a better life for their children. Now their kids are legal and we want to seperate them or send them all back. If they are working and paying taxes I personally don't have a problem with that. That's my opinion.

I am glad some across the country are now seeing what we in Cali and Arizona go through with illegals. 10 to a 1 bedroom apartment... NO PROBLEM! F up the neighborhood with so much crap and people and not to mention (oh i just will) push carts stolen from markets. I just hope on the first they then dont use anything that gringos give them like school, buses, roads, emergency rooms (if any left in LA) for little Jose's sniffles, police service, food stamps, etc. Have a great day protesting. Hope a pink slip is ready for you on the 2nd.

I was shocked the other day to find out that we had no national language. WHY THE HELL NOT?!?!?!
We require people trying to become citizens to learn english but that isn't our national language? HELLO!!!
As I seem to remember there was a move in the 90s to make English the official language of the US, and I believe that Bob Dole was behind the drive. It was decried by the liberals as "racist" and was defeated.
I say we one-up the Canadians. We will have 3 official languages. No one will like it, but then no one can complain that they are being unfairly treated. They should be English, Eubonics/urban slang, and Espanol. All official government documentation will have to be published in all 3 languages...

I am with you Dman. However, dont look for any change any time soon. With Hispanic population in this country booming like rabbits, they have (I believe) already replaced blacks as the largest minority and look to be 1/3 of our population by 2050. And, while the democrats have made racial pandering into an artform, the Reps dont wanna loose both the blacks and the hispanics. Look for both parties to handing out promises to the hispanic population look kind old ladies hand out candy on Halloween. And you, the American tax payer will pay the bill for this fiesta.

have you seen a ballot in elections? You name the language, they get it for you. Amazing you can become a citizen but not be able to read in english to vote.

I think, when I retire from the military (2 yrs away), I will take out my aggression at the border. Sort of "merc" myself at 1 or 2 month stints. I know there will still be plenty of "business" that needs to be settled down there. Haven't visited texas or arizona in a while. California? No way. They made their bed, I'm thinking we need to "liberate" them from the union permanently. Sad state of affairs in that state........dman
