Denver, Colorado (April 8, 2006) Some might say they've seen it coming for weeks. Others blame Colorado Avalanche General Manager Pierre Lacroix, but the fact of the matter is that Joe Sakic's back has finally broken after carrying the load for the Colorado Avalanche for the last several weeks. "I felt the pain coming on for a while, but I continued to carry the team because no one else would do it," Sakic said in true Captain fashion, "Right now, I'm just doing what I can untill someone else picks up some slack." Some say the coming of Goalie Jose Theodore might ease the tension, but for now it is still unclear how much longer Sakic will have to keep the Avalanche on his back

Maybe that's how Tanguay got hurt. Maybe his knee finally gave out from him carrying the load for a good portion of the season.
Sakic has been great, but he didn't really take over until Tanguay landed on the injured list.

Oh, did the NHL settle their strike??
I didn't notice...

This thread is a bunch of crap. Joe wouldn't tell anybody if his back was broken.

This type of ailment has been contagious in and around the Pepsi Center... Word on the street is that Carmelo Anthony has been suffering from something quite similar.

If it was the playoffs he'd just play through it.

I lost interest in the Avalanche and the NHL when they declined to play last season. I wasn't even aware that Peter Forsberg was on another team, how did that happen?

True. No one knew about his separated shoulder in the 2001 playoffs. He played over half of the postseason with it, said nothing about it and the coaching staff would only acknowledge that he had an "upper body injury."

Huh, too bad for you. You're missing out.
He signed with another team who offered him more money.

Still bitter? ;D
Don't worry, you're not alone. I was hanging out with a buddy of mine last night and the mere mention of Forsberg's name inspired a "**** him" response. I should tell him that he has to wear one of my Forsberg jersies to the game tomorrow night or I'm taking someone else. :wiggle:

Yep. Still bitter.
That would be just mean to make him wear that. All 3 of mine haven't been touched once in my closet. They just sit there. The only way I'd ever put any of them back on is if he somehow came back or retired an Av.

I still wear mine happily. In fact, I'll be wearing one at the game tomorrow.
I think I'll wait to get a new one until there are Wolski or Stastny Avs jerseys to be had.
My wife wants a Theodore jersey......with him in it.

Come on....because of him and the effects of the trade that got him, the Avs won two Stanley Cups.
He's injury prone, but a true gamer...and I think the Avs miss having him, but we're still doing great...thoughnot on the Red Wings level it seems...

Let's face it. He signed with a team who offered him any money. It wasn't outrageous. Not even Bertuzzi range....

Wouldn't mind seeing Stastny give Liles a rolex or something so he could wear his old man's number in the NHL...that would be sweet!

Now that I look back at it, I would have been angry at Forsberg if he accept the Av's offer over the Flyers money. No fan base is worth that.
I mean, even Sakic almost signed with the Rangers before the Av's topped their offer.
Its hard for any of us to imagine the kind of money these guys make, but if another team offers you $4 million more than another - like 3 times as much, would YOU take it?
I dont think these players make too much money. I used before I understood the business aspect of it. Think about it, these guys are celebrities... businessmen in the entertainment industry. Everybody knows who these guys are.... do you even know who the CEO of Exxon is? Exactly.

I thought the offer made to Peter was a token. They'd decided on Blake and Sakic. That was it.

That Lyles sure is a itty bitty thing. Takes off the gear and skates and there isn't much to him. I'm surprised he makes it as a defenseman.
I was never bitter about Forsberg or Foote leaving. The Avs were between a rock and a hard place, they were going to lose good players. Teams like Detroit and Philadelphia were able to rid themselves of less productive overpaid veterans, the Avs didn't have that same luxury. They were going to lose productive players no matter what.
What if Forsberg and Foote had been under contract and Sakic and Blake were the free agents? It was a lose-lose situation.
Even if the Avs had bought out Blake's contract, they still would have had to trade or buy out other players in order to keep Forsberg and Foote. You can't afford to tie up 30-40 % of your salary in three players. Which is why adding Theodore's salary the next two years ticks me off. Sure the cap is expected to go up anywhere from $42 to $46 million, but what if it goes down in 07-08?
In the new NHL, it's all about cheap young players. That's why Lacroix can't afford to give up guys like Wolski, Stoa and Stastny. That's also why giving up guys like Ballard and Gilbert will look foolish later on (especially when you consider the lack of quality defensive prospects in the system).

Come on Jori, you know that the deal that sent Ballard to Phoenix brought back the pick that turned into Stastny. :wiggle:
I'm fully aware of the lack of defense prospects in the Avs system, but getting Stastny out of that deal makes it very tolerable. Maybe it's just the :homer: in me talking, but getting Stastny & Vaananen in that deal wasn't bad at all for the Avs (Gratton was exactly what everyone knew he'd be).
I love Stastny as much as anybody, but the Avs did have four second round picks, any of those other picks could have been used to draft Paul. It just happened to be that pick from Phoenix.
Defense is the weakest part of the team and the organization and to give up two solid defensive prospects makes you shake your head. Watching Gilbert just score the go ahead goal for Wisconsin makes me sick. We gave this guy away for Tommy friggin Salo. What a waste!

Terribly true. Gratton is inch for inch, and pound for pound...the biggest waste of NHL tradeline rumour since the elusive Eric Weinrich. They both suck major league Jake Peavy balls. (Edit: If memory serves...Gratton DID win a lot of face offs for the "Diques")
As far as Forsberg...the Avs gave him a completely bullsh!t offer. It was a slap in the face. He get hurts a lot, but every game he plays he brings more than pretty much any player in the league. It's substantial. Pierre made his choice. He picked Rob Blake.

.
After the initial dissapointment, I felt the same way. The week before when the RMNs ran the full page picture of Sakic and Blake I told a friend of mine the decision had been made. So it was with reluctant resignation I stomached the leaving of Foote and Forsberg. The "New" NHL was demanding some major bodies be moved around or look like the fools they are, so no way the Avs weren't making their contributions.
Peter is as Peter does. While one of the most creative and exciting players in the game I have nagging doubts that he could "break his back" the way Joe does in carrying the team. He usually has too many other things broken.

Sakic did sign with the Rangers. They thought the poison pill in the contract would be the utterly outlandish (for its time) signing bonus. The Avs swallowed hard and matched and then some of the dumber Avs fans actually got down on the guy when he didn't lead Colorado to the next three Cups in a row.

Thanks Harrison!
"But the Avalanche's owners, Ascent Entertainment, lucked out because the movie Air Force One, starring Harrison Ford, was a big hit and the company had some cash flow. They matched the Rangers' offer and Sakic stayed put. Score one for Han Solo."

Yes, it was a 3 year deal worth a total of $21 million. $15 million of it was a signing bonus and the base salaries were $2 million per season. A pretty hefty contract for it's time.
You want dumb? There were some Avs fans at the time who actually called Sakic disloyal for signing the offer sheet. I wish that wasn't true, but it is.
