Miraculous Scrubs News--Stat! Plus, What You Want to Know About Brian and Pepper Dennis

by Kristin Veitch | Apr. 7, 2006

It's that show with heart, wit, same-sex lovin' and some of the dreamiest doctors around. No, not that hot medical show, the even hotterest one: NBC's Scrubs. (Whose leading man, by the way, did profess his love for Grey's Anatomy this season: "It's like they've been watching our lives and just put it on TV!")

If you are aware that Zach Braff looks cute in another man's arms, that "jiggly ball" is a fake game the janitor made up to taunt J.D. and that Turk does the best pop 'n' lock "Poison" dance on the planet, you have been watching this kickass show this season. If not, you should be kicking yourself, because by all accounts (mine, TV Guide's, Entertainment Weekly's, Zach Braff's mother's), Scrubs is currently enjoying its best season ever.

That is why I'm over the moon to share with you the insanely good news executive producer Bill Lawrence shared with me earlier this week: He felt "100 percent certain Scrubs will be back next season."

Not only has the show been strong in the ratings, turns out there's a plan B should NBC not pick up the show: moving Sacred Heart Hospital's docs to the same spot on the dial as Seattle Grace's.

"The big caveat is where it comes back," Lawrence explained. "You know, we're going to keep all the writing staff and do all that stuff because we've been pretty much told if it's not on NBC, it's going to be on ABC next year, which is interesting. We're owned by Touchstone, and the person who developed the show in the first place--when he was the head of Touchstone Studios--is now the president of ABC, Steve McPherson."

Clearly, this sure-thing status is the miracle of miracles to us fans who have adored this show since day one--and fretted over its fate. So, exactly how did Scrubs suddenly catapult to sure-thing status? Cite all the factors you want, but I say it's because (as J.D. would say) it's so "G-darn" good!

No other show on television will make you laugh out loud more than Scrubs these days, thanks to the genius writing, a drop-dead funny cast and a secret weapon who should not be overlooked: Donald Faison, who--you may have noticed--is so on top of his game this season, he's stealing more scenes than those sidekicks on Will & Grace.

I called D.F. to share the love, and he credited a surprising source for the show's uptick this season. "I think the fact that we didn't come on in the beginning made everybody step up their game," Faison said. "We all couldn't watch each week to gauge how we were doing, so we just got wackier and wackier and started having a little too much fun. Also, I mean, when people have a hit show, they might tend to sit back, relax and maybe not worry about what they put on the air, because they know people will tune in. But we have had to fight for our audience, and I think that makes us a little bit hungrier than other shows on television."

I dare say Donald might be a televisionary, because this theory might finally explain how shows that are megahits right out of the gate (I won't name names, but there are obvious examples) can lose a bit of oomph in the second season. But other series with slower starts in the ratings (Arrested Development, The Office, Grey's Anatomy, Veronica Mars and, yes, Scrubs) continue to get better and better with each passing season.

Still, don't you fret, Lawrence is hardly resting in his new 100 percent confidence. "Some of our best stuff is still to come," he teased. "At the end of April, we have a really cool storyline that we took from a real medical story, in which Dr. Cox's character kind of bottoms out. He makes his first giant mistake as a doctor, and it's a very cool three-episode arc."

As for Elliot's hot romance with her boy-toy intern (Travis Schuldt), "We're definitely gonna keep that going," Lawrence said. "I like the guy. He's a recurring character, but we just like him and like their relationship. They have a big crossroads episode--the second-to-last one--about which direction they're going go from here. Travis is funny, and he makes her funny 'cause he's kinda earnest and handsome and normal without being too much of an idiot."

Speaking of the devilishly handsome devil, I gotta tell you, Travis Schuldt just might be future husband material, because he's one of the nicest (read: sexiest) and most personable (read: way too smart for a pretty boy) actors you will ever meet. He said he hopes to be back next season because "it's not really work; I just get to play for eight hours and make out with Sarah Chalke." And--hello!--don't forget about his spooning scene with Zach Braff. "Yeah, I jumped into bed and kissed J.D. when I was drunk. And then he was puttin' oil on me a couple of weeks ago, so Zach and I got to know each other real quick. I now know what Zach Braff smells like."

Meanwhile, Faison said he's leaving the questions about next season to Lawrence, but he certainly hopes to be back. Why? "Well, one, for the money. Two, for the show."

Dr. Cox: So, now... why'd you finally agree to marry Gandhi?
Carla: Well, he's amazing in bed... and he has an awesome CD collection.
Dr. Cox: Seriously, what got you to the point where you weren't scared any more?
Carla: Please! I'm still terrified! I mean, good luck finding a pen cap at the nurses' station. Know why?
Dr. Cox: Why?
Carla: Ate 'em all.
Dr. Cox: Sounds like good roughage to me.

Fantastic news, brown bear!
