Homeland official charged in online sex sting
AP Story
MIAMI - A leading spokesman for the Homeland Security Department was put on unpaid leave Wednesday after being charged with preying on a child through online sexual conversations with an undercover detective who was posing as a 14-year-old girl.
Homeland Security officials said Brian J. Doyle, the fourth-ranking spokesman at the department, was put on “non-pay status” following the charges late Tuesday. Doyle, 55, was expected to appear in court Wednesday afternoon in suburban Maryland, where he lives.
“The department is cooperating fully with the ongoing investigation into the allegations against Brian Doyle,” said Homeland Security press secretary Russ Knocke. “We take these allegations very seriously.”
Knocke said Doyle’s security clearance, employee badge and facility access permissions have been suspended. The department’s inspector general also is investigating the charges, which accused Doyle of revealing his name and his employer and offering the numbers of his Homeland Security-issued office and cell phones during online conversations.
Doyle joined the federal government as a civil service employee shortly after the Sept. 11, 2001, terror attacks, working at the Federal Aviation Administration and the Transportation Security Administration. He joined the Homeland Security’s press operation last summer.
A former colleague said Doyle is divorced.
The charges, by the Polk County, Fla., Sheriff’s Department, accuse Doyle of finding the teenager’s profile online and allege that he began having sexually explicit conversations with her on the Internet on March 14.
Allegedly sent pornography
Authorities said he sent her pornographic movie clips, as well as non-sexual photos of himself, officials said. One of the photos, released by the sheriff’s office, shows Doyle in what appears to be DHS headquarters. He is wearing a Homeland Security pin on his lapel and a lanyard that says “TSA.”
On several occasions, Doyle instructed her to perform a sexual act while thinking of him and described explicit activities he wanted to have with her, investigators said.
Authorities arrested Doyle on Tuesday at his Silver Spring, Md., home as he was online with the “girl.” The undercover detective had called Doyle at work and said she got a Web camera, as he had asked her to do, and wanted to test it out, said Carrie Rodgers, Polk County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman.
“He said he would get on the computer when he got home from work so we knew he would be on,” Rodgers said. “When (police) went to his door, he was on the computer in the middle of a conversation with the girl.”
He was booked into the Montgomery County Detention Center. Doyle also faces a charge of transmission of harmful material to a minor.
“He said last night that he was going to waive extradition. If he does that, we may have him back by the end of the week,” Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd said Wednesday. “He could get to court today and some lawyer may say ’no, you don’t want to do that.’ The bottom line is we don’t know when he’s coming back.”
There was no immediate response to messages left on Doyle’s government-issued cell phone and his e-mail, and he could not be reached by phone at the jail for comment.

As sad as this is, there are bad apples everywhere. Even excellent screeening procedures will miss those who are adept at hiding this kind of behavior. This kind of deviancy requires a good amount of critical deception skills and this guy is no different.
I hope he gets prosecuted to the full extent of the law though.

Yeah, I had forgotten that. The site they featured on that show was http://www.perverted-justice.com/. It is basically volunteers that pose as children in chat rooms, then post the chat logs of their sexually-explicit chats with adults. They then try and find as much personal information (address, phone number, place of employment, etc.) of the offending adults as possible, and they post that, too. And for good measure, they contact employers, whenever possible.
It's pretty harsh, but not as harsh as trying to have sex with a minor. Stupid people.

Whats disturbing to me is now only these two guys were government officials, but the law is not strict enough on these sexual predators.
I have a big problem w/ that and also, its voluntary (I believe) for those that have been arrested before to register in a state.
I remember watching CNN and one zip code, which stretched across a big area around Jacksonville, had 75,000 listed sexual offenders.
That is alarming.
I dont get how these guys, the ones that actually committ these acts, get less jail time on average than a drug dealer.

They do. There was an article in the Chicago Trib about an IL service that can tell you about all the registered Child Molesters in a 1 or 2(I can't remember) mile radius or your address & you can get emailed when one moves into that radius. The wife looked it up & signed up for the email & found we had over 15 KNOWN registered child molesters in our radius. I almost preferred to not know. We are in a single family home next to a lot of town homes but no Apartment high rises where there would be a huge concentration of people.

Well, its a crime that's self perpetuating, as the abused often become abusers.
I also believe the advent of the internet caused the numbers to explode, too. Now these freaks are able to see that there are others out there like them and I think it makes it easier for them to justify their behavior. In one regard, that's good, because they're more likely to get caught in sting operations when they slither out into the sunlight.

It's not about the employee, it's about the power that the republican executive branch is allowing the employees to have. Bush wants to make it OK for the government to pry into people's lives without having a subpoena.
The danger arises when the government agencies can't be trusted. I'm not saying Bush is condoning sexual illegalities on his watch. What I am saying is that when you sidestep the constitution you are opening up many problems. One of them is not being able to trust individual government employees.
I am uncomfortable with any legislation that strips us of our civil liberties all in the name of safety and protection; be it the Patriot act, or any other law that allows the gov't to pry into our personal lives. There are too many way to abuse that power. One of those way is employing sexual predators who may have the ability to tap people's phones and read their email.
The law and the constitution protect us. Do I want that protection? Yes. And I even want that protection if Democrats run the White hous and legislative branches.

Are you serious? Can you find me the press release Brian Doyle was named as a "Bush appointee?" He is described as a "Homeland Security press aid." If I go apply for a job in, say, The Department of Agriculture - I want to work in the administration for the Forest Service, let's say - do I interview with the White House for that job? Do I get to speak with the president himself? Or am I hired by someone in the Forest Service, who was hired by someone in the Forest Service, and so on...
Tell me - when a president administration changes, do we just shut down the government so the new president can hire brand new employees at every level? I called the IRS back in 1998, and the person I talked to on the IRS 1-800 number gave me the wrong answer - typical for a Clinton appointee. ::)
Do you realize how trite you have become here? You waste your time posting all your drivel, because no one with half a brain cares about what you say. You are beyond predictable. You have a pat answer for any scenario, and it always - always! - comes from the same direction. You aren't honest about what you believe on any given issue. You are a lobbyist - like a paid shill. Gannongate threatens to expose a huge GOP pedophile and male prostitution ring

February 18, 2005—Now that is has been discovered that "Jeff Gannon" (real name James D. Guckert), a "reporter" for Talon News Service, a front operation run by the conservative Republican-oriented GOPUSA.com, was using an alias as a cleared White House reporter, details are emerging that threaten to immerse the Bush administration in a major scandal.
"Gannongate," which is only now being mentioned by the mainstream news media, threatens to expose a potentially damaging GOP pedophile and male prostitution ring dating back to the 1980s and the administration of George H. W. Bush. James D. Guckert, using the name Jeff Gannon and possibly other aliases, was also running gay porn sites, one with a U.S. Marine Corps theme that solicited males for prostitution.
White House Press Secretary Scott McClellan said he did not realize Gannon was using an alias until recently. However, rumors in the gay community are circulating about McClellan frequenting gay bars in Austin, Texas.
Gannon bypassed established Secret Service security controls, including a background check requiring a social security number, to obtain a White House press pass that identified him by an alias, an action seen by many seasoned Washington journalists as only being possible if he had favorable treatment from White House staff, especially McClellan and his predecessor, Ari Fleischer. One White House reporter expressed revulsion over the fact that it was Fleischer who took away press credentials from the late long-time White House correspondent Sarah McClendon and handed them to Gannon.
GOPUSA.com is run by a right-wing Texan and Bush friend named Bobby Eberle. In 2003, GOPUSA.com launched a vicious anti-Semitic attack against international financier George Soros, a leading philanthropist for progressive causes and a major contributor to the Democratic Party.
In 2003, Gannon was reportedly given access by White House staff to a classified State Department Bureau of Intelligence and Research memorandum regarding a CIA meeting involving the dispatch of former U.S. Ambassador Joseph Wilson to Niger to investigate claims, which turned out to be false, that Iraq had attempted to procure yellowcake uranium from the West African country. The Wilson case ultimately led to a leak to the media by unnamed White House staff of Wilson's wife's name and identity as a covert CIA agent.
It was also revealed that Jeffgannon.com had been registered by the same Delaware-based company that had registered other Republican-oriented web sites, along with those catering to pornographic military gay themes and male escort services.
TalonNews.com and GOPUSA.com are both registered to Endeavor Media Group LLC, operating from Post Office Box 891354 in Houston, Texas. The phone number provided is 999-999-9999. The registrant for a series of web sites, including Jeffgannon.com, Theconservativeguy.com, Exposejessejackson.com, Militaryescorts.com, militaryescortsm4m.com, and hotmilitarystud.com is Bedrock Corporation of 4001 Kennett Pike in Wilmington, Delaware. Bedrock is owned by Jim Guckert, the apparent real identity of Jeff Gannon. The administrative contact for Bedrock was listed as "J. Daniels," possibly another alias.
After the Gannon story broke, militaryescorts.com and hotmilitarystud.com were redirected to a secure log-in site at Cupertino, California-based www.dividezero.net/, which was registered to GKG.Net, which had a contact email in College Station, Texas, the home of Texas A&M University and the George H.W. Bush presidential library. Dividezero.net had a secure log-in window but no subscription information. Experts who track illegal content on the web, including child pornography, report that such sites are common where log-in information is provided separately by regular mail so that the identities of subscribers cannot be easily tracked by online enrollment and entry of credit card information.
Gannongate is reminiscent of a huge political scandal that surfaced in Nebraska in 1989 when it was learned that Lawrence King, the head of Franklin Community Credit Union in Omaha and a rising African American star in the GOP (he sang the national anthem at George H. W. Bush's 1988 nominating convention in New Orleans), was a kingpin—along with top Republicans in Nebraska and Washington, DC, including George H. W. Bush—in a child prostitution and pedophilia scandal. King was later convicted and jailed for fraud but pedophile and prostitution charges were never brought against him and other Nebraska Republican businessmen and politicians.
The scandal, investigated by Nebraska State Senator Loran Schmit, his assistant John DeCamp (a former GOP state senator), State Senate Committee investigator Gary Caradori, and former CIA Director William Colby, reached the very top echelons of the George H. W. Bush administration and GOP. Child prostitutes from Boys Town and other orphanages in Nebraska as well as children procured from China were reportedly flown to Washington for sexcapades with Republican politicians. GOP lobbyist Craig Spence and a number of GOP officials in the administration and Congress were implicated in the scandal, including Labor Secretary Elizabeth Dole's liaison to the White House. Young male members of the military in Washington, DC, were particularly sought after by the prostitution ring. During the early 1980s, a number of naval officers were implicated in a child pornography ring that extended from Oregon to the San Francisco Bay area and to Chicago and Washington, DC. The story about that ring was covered up by then-Secretary of the Navy John Lehman.
The Nebraska pedophile scandal was similarly covered up on orders from the highest levels of power in the senior Bush White House. Caradori and his young son were killed in a suspicious plane crash in Illinois in 1990. Colby was found floating dead in the Chesapeake Bay, near his home, in 1996. Craig Spence allegedly committed suicide in 1989. Witnesses, many of whom were abused themselves, were intimidated and subsequently jailed in Nebraska and the investigation of the pedophile scandal eventually collapsed. The entire military aspect of the King-Spence scandal is now being repeated in Washington in Gannongate.
Last year, a senior source on the Washington Times editorial staff (the same paper that broke the GOP pedophile scandal in 1989) linked White House Deputy Chief of Staff Karl Rove to gay activities involving top Republican political strategists in Washington, DC.
Gannon (Guckert) has been a major player in GOP and fundamentalist Christian politics in Washington and around the country. In 2004, "Jeff Gannon" was a featured speaker at a Capitol Hill Bible reading sponsored by anti-abortion Operation Rescue head Reverend Rob Schenk. In 1995, Schenk was the spokesman for the American Center for Law and Justice, an anti-abortion group funded by Pat Robertson. Schenk was also a major supporter of former Alabama Supreme Court Justice Roy Moore, who was removed from office for refusing to comply with a federal court order.
Schenk, who attended prayer meetings at John Ashcroft's Capitol Hill apartment after Ashcroft came to Washington in 1994, established his Pentecostal National Community Church at the dilapidated Giddings School in a crime-ridden neighborhood in Southeast Washington. One of his congregants was Ashcroft. The Hill newspaper ran an article on July 30, 2003, about a controversy surrounding plans by the community development Eighth Street Main Streets Project to place park benches in a small triangular park at 8th and I Streets in Southeast Washington, opposite the U.S. Marine Corps Barracks. The paper reported that a "community activist" named Jeff Gannon vehemently opposed the park bench plan claiming it would attract "vagrants, alcoholics, and other 'problem personalities.'" The park is located just five blocks from the school where "reporter" Gannon's friend Schenk first located his Pentecostal church.
Gannon hosted a web-based radio program called "Jeff Gannon's Washington," broadcast on his own web site, Jeffgannon.com, and Righttalk.com, a conservative GOP site whose registrant is based in Watsonville, California. Gannon's only journalism credentials were his attendance at a two-day seminar at the Leadership Institute's Broadcast School of Journalism in Arlington, Virginia. The head of the Leadership Institute is Morton Blackwell, a former Reagan administration official and a one-time head of the College Republicans, a post that Karl Rove also filled.
Gannon seemed particularly interested in South Dakota politics. GOP Senate candidate John Thune appeared on Gannon's radio webcast program. On February 4, 2004, while being served softball questions by Gannon, Thune called Daschle an "obstructionist and antagonist to President Bush."
According to Roll Call, Gannon also served as an official of the Free Speech Foundation, an organization that helped defend ProBush.com from a lawsuit by former South Dakota Democratic Senator James Abourezk. The web site features a "Traitor's List" that includes Abourezk. The former senator and Navy veteran sued ProBush.com for defamation. Abourezk asked for $5 million in damages and a public apology after sending a cease and desist letter to the web site owner, a 21-year old suburban Philadelphia resident named Mike Marino, who registered the site using a post office box address in West Point, Pennsylvania. After Abourezk's lawsuit threat, Gannon came to Marino's assistance. Other names on the Traitor's List include President Jimmy Carter, Susan Sarandon, Viggo Mortensen, Al Gore, Hillary Clinton, Howard Stern, John Kerry, Edward Kennedy, Martin Luther King III, Rep. Cynthia McKinney, Michael Moore, The Dixie Chicks, and former Democratic Rep. Gary Condit of California.
Gannon was also wired into the neo-conservative American Enterprise Institute (AEI). He wrote a pro-Iraq war article for the March 1, 2004, issue of their magazine, American Enterprise. AEI employs such ardent neo-conservative figures as Richard Perle, Michael Ledeen, and Lynne Cheney. Ironically, many of Gannon's articles were anti-gay rights, such as one that insinuated that John Kerry's "pro-homosexual platform" would make him the nation's "first gay president."

As such, you are nothing more than background noise.
Cut and paste this in individual quotes, and add lots of smileys. No sense stopping being predictable now.
Just as expected - nothing but a bunch of willy-nilly ad hominem attacks and baseless accusations - none of which address my original post.
Talk about "predictable" - you are a veritable walking textbook of standard-brand, right-wing deflection and obfuscation tactics.
But I'm sure the folks at DHS are happy to know you have their backs. :D

That's got nothing to do with it..and look...the guy got caught despite his job.

The minute you present this list, the right-wing spin jobbers will claim that you are trying to argue that all republicans are pedophiles.
Actually, we just want them to explain why so many GOP office holders are pedophiles.
Is it just a coincidence?
If so, then why can't they produce a comparable list of Dems?

Bingo.
Someone finally gets it.
It's not like this Doyle character is the first DHS official who has been arrested for some crime or another or who has been exposed as a fraud/Bush crony who possesses no real qualifications for his position.
DHS is a government bureaucracy created by the Bush administration and charged with 'securing the homeland.'
Can you image the reaction from the right had something like all of the above happened on Clinton's watch?

I was referring to your last post.
Rather than simply stating "I disagree with your opinion, and here are the reasons why" or "you don't have your facts straight, and here's proof" or "this particular statement you made is false, and here's why," you simply label anything that makes you uncomfortable as "spam" or "propaganda" - as if that ended the entire debate right then and there.

I was referring to your last post.
I meant to say that my only intention on this board is to spam it incessantly with anti-Bush, anti-GOP propaganda. I volunteer for moveon.org and we are implementing a propaganda strategy for internet message boards. I have no interest in the Broncos or in any person or persons on this site.
I am logically challenged.
LAPM, I was just commenting on how funny it is that you make posts that you gear towards an "audience" and how it is rare that you will ever even address the person you are conversing with.

You know what I said about you being "background noise" is true. Everyone else on here knows it, too. The funny thing is that I am not really all that conservative in my political beliefs. Heck, I voted for Bill Clinton - twice! But you are too blinded by your paranoia and your desire to slap labels on everyone that you don't even notice what people really think.

The irony of your ability to dish the ad hominems out but not take them.
Case in point:
You know what I said about you being "background noise" is true.
And he follows the ad hominem up with a bandwagon appeal:
Everyone else on here knows it, too.
And a real whopper:
The funny thing is that I am not really all that conservative in my political beliefs.
And I'm the Easter Bunny.
People who are "not really all that conservative" don't vote the way you did in baja's recent poll.
you created the perception people have of you.
Actually, just the reverse is true.
People see what they want to see, and there is nothing either you or I can do about it.
The real question is: Why are other people's perceptions, i.e., appearances, so important to you?
I'd be willing to bet there isn't a single person on the OrangeMane that is more on ignore than you.
Bandwagon appeal #2.
Beats having to actually construct a valid argument or deal with matters of fact, questions of truth/falsehood, etc., I suppose.

No. You'd have to actually have to go back to read the thread to see - apparently, you are the version of the fully automated DemBot that doesn't have that level of sophistication.
I said:
Sure, there are incidents about which I am not proud. But as a whole, I think this presidency has dealt with issues unprecedented in our country's history. I believe they deserve to be judged, as a whole, by a slightly different set of standards for that reason.
And then:
Of course you have to put a presidency in the context of the issues it faced, because judging a presidency is a subjective process. There's no absolute score that can be kept.
The great presidents almost always have had a focal issue they dealt with, and how they handled that issue is what made their presidency memorable. In other words, their presidency is judged contextually. All the great presidents have failed at some things. But it is easier to overlook their failings because they dealt successfully with something of extreme historical significance.
And finally:
It just seemed that you tried to paint things a bit more black and white than what is fair.
It's part of why I can't stomach LABF. It's every bit as predictable as Rush Limbaugh.
I don't lean dramatically one way or another politically (although, in fairness - I would say I lean more to the right than the left). But the left seems to be incapable of getting on the same page long enough to mount any kind of challenge against the right - and MY, are they capable of complaining! Another milquetoast approach in 2008 by the Democrats is likely to result in more of the same for our government (and thus, more incessant b****ing from the left).
It's time to crap or get off the pot.
Nothing "blindly" pro-W there. I'm just not willing to incessantly b**** with no reasonable solutions, like you.
