Plummer takes time to reflect
By Bill Williamson
Denver Post Staff Writer

Jake Plummer (Post / John Leyba)

Jake Plummer was digging in for his 10th NFL season as he hung out Tuesday at a picnic table at Dove Valley shortly after completing his second day of the Broncos' offseason workout program.

"To say I love coming here to lift and run this early in the year would be a lie," Plummer said. "But it starts the season so it's important. Hopefully, nine or 10 months down the road, we'll have that championship and this will all be worth it."

A relaxed Plummer, speaking publicly Tuesday for the first time since right after Denver's 34-17 loss to Pittsburgh in the AFC championship game, addressed topics ranging from his 2005 season, the upcoming season, Terrell Owens, the team's needs and his new mentor.

As Plummer, 31, prepares for the Broncos' AFC West Division title defense, he reflected on a mostly successful 2005 season. Plummer was named to his first Pro Bowl team, answered his coach's challenges and cut down dramatically on mistakes. Plummer, who completed 60.7 percent of his passes - second highest in his career - threw 18 touchdown passes and only seven interceptions in 456 attempts.

"I'm coming off the best season of my career," said Plummer, who has healed from an abdominal injury that kept him out of the Pro Bowl. "I'm confident I'll continue to make improvements that will make me better."

Still, Plummer said he is bothered by his performance in the Jan. 22 loss to Pittsburgh at Invesco Field at Mile High. He threw two interceptions and lost two fumbles in the game.

"If it weren't for the mistakes I made, we probably win that game," Plummer said. "If you ask Al (Wilson), he'd say we lost the game because the defense didn't make enough stops, but that's a team. We all take the blame. But I really do think if I didn't make my mistakes, we would have won."

Eight days after the loss to the eventual Super Bowl champion Steelers, Denver coach Mike Shanahan brought in Owens for a visit. Owens wound up signing with Dallas last month. Plummer said he happily would have accepted Owens, who alienated Jeff Garcia and Donovan McNabb, the last two quarterbacks he played with.

"I would have welcomed him," Plummer said. "He's a playmaker. I always want to play with playmakers. I really don't think it would have been a problem here. Attitudes don't work here. I'm playing with one of the greatest players to ever play the game in Champ Bailey and he doesn't come in here with an ego, and I wouldn't expect T.O. to have come in here like that, either."

Plummer said he is looking forward to the draft April 29-30, in which the Broncos have the No. 15 and 22 picks in the first round.

"I think we'll probably take a playmaker pretty high in

the draft," Plummer said. "I don't care where. As a quarterback you always want weapons."
Plummer said he still believes the Broncos' current crop of offensive players is strong. He said he will be excited to see young receivers David Terrell and Darius Watts - who he said has "sick" talent - take the next steps in their careers.

"I like focusing on who we have here now, and I like what we have," Plummer said.

Plummer said he has had a few meetings with new assistant head coach Mike Heimer- dinger, who replaces Gary Kubiak and will be working closely with Plummer.

Kubiak, the former Broncos offensive coordinator, is now the head coach in Houston. Plummer said he will begin working in earnest with Heimerdinger next week.

Unlike the calm Kubiak, Heimerdinger - known for his development of quarterback Steve McNair in Tennessee - has a reputation for being vocal.

"Gary would get on me, but mostly in games," Plummer said. "In practice, I don't act like a fool so I don't think Coach Heimerdinger is going to have a problem with me."

Footnotes

Offensive lineman Dwayne Carswell said his comeback from an auto accident has made him appreciate the remaining time in his career. Carswell, 34, has been cleared to play and is participating in the team's offseason program. He was lost for the season last October after the accident, in which he suffered several injuries.

"The accident threw a monkey wrench into my playing career, but it also made me realize that I have to take advantage of the time I have left in the NFL," Carswell said. ... Defensive end Ebenezer Ekuban believes the team will adjust some of its schemes to enable the defensive line to get more sacks. Ekuban also said he expects new end Kenard Lang - the two played together in Cleveland - to register five to eight sacks as the nickel pass rusher. ... The NFL regular-season schedule will be released Thursday. There's a chance Denver will open at St. Louis or Cleveland.

Remember last year, he said the same thing, I think he came out and said in some article that they were going to go offense, offense, offense. Let me see if I can find it.

I remember that.

Maybe Jake is a part of the Broncos smokescreen machine for the draft.

He's not the GM. He also wanted TO. I'm not saying he doesn't talk to the people in charge regularly, but when it comes to Shanahan's draft "No man knoweth, save God only."

Plummer: Broncos will return to playoffs
Quarterback excited about off-season upgrades on defense

By Lee Rasizer, Rocky Mountain News
April 13, 2005

It was during the Denver Broncos' free-agent courtship of Courtney Brown that quarterback Jake Plummer first voiced the attitude that apparently permeated the team's locker room during off-season workouts this month.

While considering whether to join the Broncos, Brown said he was tired of the teams he played on failing to make the playoffs.

No worries, Plummer replied, that is not a chief concern for the Broncos.

"We know we're going to get to the playoffs this year," Plummer boldly said Tuesday in retelling the story during an informal sit-down with Denver media. "Now it's a matter of getting past the first round."

Plummer was asked to clarify the statement regarding the postseason.

"Right now, the way the team is going, we've got the same team back," he said, noting the exits of safety Kenoy Kennedy and running back Reuben Droughns were tough but replaceable losses. "But we've got the same core leaders, guys that have been here for many years and some new additions, so we're excited about our prospects. If everything goes right, we definitely should be there."

Among the new players Denver recently added were Brown and three of his other former Cleveland Browns defensive linemates, Gerard Warren, Michael Myers and Ebenezer Ekuban. Denver also persuaded linebackers Ian Gold and Keith Burns to return, further adding to the team's emphasis on defense.

Meanwhile, only tight end Stephen Alexander and running back Ron Dayne were added to the offense.

That apparently is fine with Plummer, who is entering his third season with the Broncos.

The addition of Gold will be "huge," Plummer predicted, and the other defensive reinforcements likely will help lessen the pressure on the offense to score and will allow the group to take over possessions quicker and with better field position.

"I think we're loaded on defense," Plummer said. "And now they're going to make some moves in the draft on offense, which you never don't like as a quarterback."

Denver will have to avoid another lull after a fast start if it is going to come close to fulfilling Plummer's playoff vision.

The Broncos started last season 5-1 but finished 5-5 to finish second in the AFC West.

Plummer threw for 27 touchdowns, 20 interceptions and 4,089 yards, calling it a "successful" individual season.

But it was not enough to keep the Broncos from avoiding a second consecutive road game in the wild-card round against the Indianapolis Colts and a blowout loss at the RCA Dome.

Getting over that hump will "take a team commitment," said Plummer, who got a taste of it this month while working with 72 other players in Denver's strength and conditioning program.

Plummer reiterated his belief he needs to improve and said he already has begun the process by reviewing some basics from last season. He expects to address specifics with coaches during the team's passing camp in May and through training camp.

"Going into my third year, I'm really comfortable with everybody on this team," he said. "Some guys obviously stepped up last year, with (tight end) Jeb (Putzier) and (receiver) Ashley (Lelie). That's exciting. To get a Tatum Bell back there (at running back) and they are going to get more weapons, you have to love the position I'm in.

"I just have to keep working hard."

ON TAP: The NFL schedule will be released today. When it is, do not be surprised if the Broncos have a Thanksgiving game at Dallas.

The team also believes it might receive a couple of prime-time home games because Denver's opponents at Invesco Field at Mile High include Super Bowl finalists New England Patriots and Philadelphia Eagles, plus the New York Jets and Baltimore Ravens.

Think maybe he's talking about Joel Klopfenstein in the third round?

Doesn't change my opinion of where they are headed in the draft. Still think they grab a couple of DL and spend the rest of the time emphasizing offense. I wouldn't be shocked to see all three of the first day picks go offense. Maybe something like White/Pope/Joseph.

As far as I know, Jake and the rest of the players still get zero access to the draft boards unless they ask the younger guys for character references from their old teams. Even then, they really do not get access except for the player in question.

Jake should just say he has no idea like the rest of us ;D

Did we acquire a 3rd rounder that I'm not aware of? ;)

That was actually quite slick of Plummer to place blame on the defense while not actually placing blame on the defense at the same time. Bravo!

You took the quote out of context. He was saying every memeber of the team would take the blame the same as he is doing.

I disagree. Instead it seems he is stating the whole team had a role on the loss. The D had some critical failures (couldn't stop a 3rd down to save their life), and he was partly responsible for 4 turnovers. Moreover, I don't think it is an accident he mentions Al, good leaders always should see their role in failures.

The quote I actually liked was from Ekuban:
"Defensive end Ebenezer Ekuban believes the team will adjust some of its schemes to enable the defensive line to get more sacks"

Now that I look forward to. Also it was nice to read that Plummer thinks that Watt's talent is sick. Now if he can only get his head into the game, maybe he can live up to Plummer's description.

Not at all. Plummer knew what he was doing. Sure he played bad but he knows the defense actually played worse than than him in that game. He is not going to come out and blame the defense for that lose but he is going to let be known that he wasn't the only guy that played bad that game. Besides what in the hell does Al Wilson have to do with how he played that game? I'm sure the question he was asked had nothing to do with the defense. It was probably more like, "How do you feel about your performance in the AFC championship game?"

no... but i am not going to try and convince you otherwise.

House feeling better is awesome, and EE's comment on getting the DL more sacks is very encouraging as well.!

But then what could we complain about. We would be winning SB's every yr and have no reason to kvetch.
