Lineman says he'll be ready for training camp; Chukwurah re-signs
By Bill Williamson

The comeback of Dwayne Carswell has commenced.

Carswell was one of more than 60 Broncos players to begin the offseason workout program Monday. The offensive lineman is attempting to return from serious injuries sustained in an October auto accident.

Barring a major setback, Denver strength and conditioning coach Rich Tuten said he expects Carswell, 34, to be ready for training camp in late July.

Tuten said the offensive tackle will be brought along slowly. Carswell began working out on his own in February, but Monday was the first time he worked with Tuten this offseason. He rode a stationary bike and lifted weights.

"It's a great start," Tuten said. "To come back from where he was is amazing. I can't imagine what he went through to get to this point. He's going to be sore, but that's good. That means it's working."

Carswell was hospitalized for eight days after his car was struck on the morning of Oct. 27 while he was on his way to work. Carswell underwent an emergency five-hour surgery after suffering multiple rib fractures, a ruptured diaphragm and a ruptured spleen that was surgically removed.

On numerous occasions, Carswell has said he expects to be well enough to participate in training camp, and his agent, Jimmy Field, recently said that plan has not changed.

At the NFL owners meetings last week, Broncos coach Mike Shanahan said he will be interested in Carswell's progress through the offseason program, which will run for 15 weeks through mid-July.

Denver will hold its minicamp in July instead of May for the second consecutive season.

Regardless if he can make it back, he can rehab from his unfortunate accident.

Good for him, but even if he is fully recovered, he could have a hard time making the team this year if an OL is selected in the draft. Might be a good choice to stash on the PUP list.

I'd like to see him come in and play Guard. We could use him if he's healthy.

I think it's uphill at his age and the severity of his injury, but it shows the class of the organization to keep him around, at least for now. He almost died and to rehab and have the support of his teammates is great therapy even if he doesn't make the squad this year.
