Anyone watching it? Any thoughts? It has somehow captivated my attention, and I must say that I kind of like it. Anyone else?

Yeah, I'm watchin it ... it's HBO Original, so I'm watching it.

Problem is, though ... it sucks.

Harry Dean Stanton is such a tragic casting blunder that I'm afraid the entire show is doomed. Roman the Prophet - the character he plays - is absolutely central to everything the show needs as a couterpoint for the sunny-but-neurotic three-house family fest.

Stanton is a decent actor I suppose, but he's just not dark enough. On a continuum line between a properly cast actor for the part - a mellow but controlling, grizzled but powerful actor on one end ... and Don Knotts/Tim Conway on the other ... I'm afraid Stanton is closer to Barney Fife than Hannibal Lechter.

The show wouldda been 100% better with maybe a Donald Sutherland or Kris Kristofferson in the role. To me, when the camera goes to ominous closeup on a cowboy boot stepping out of the truck ... then pans up to .... Harry Dean Stanton? I'm waiting to hear a rimshot and Gomer yell, "hey, Barn!"

I've been watching since it comes on right after The Sopranos. Kind of interesting but I think it will get old soon. I'm waiting for the orgy scenes! I don't imagine too many mormons are happy with it....

The Mormons don't particularly care as it against their religion and these people are not Mormon. I like it but it's missing something. The girls we grew up around that were from polygamous families wore the long dresses, no makeup, coats that were one size too small and their hair in a bun. They all looked alike. Most of the patriarch's from those families were so butt ugly you wondered how one woman, let alone more, would lay down with the guy.

Up and down for me.
I like it and will to continue to watch it, just seems to be taking awhile to reallly get going....

The first season of the Wire was kind of like that, took about 2 episodes to get me hooked. Now I think it is the Best HBO show.

"The Wire" is pretty damn good...

The only HBO Originals I don't watch are Rome and Deadwood ... am I missing anything?

Has anybody heard when (if?) The Comeback is coming back?

4.Da Ali G Show
5.Russell Simmons Presents Def Poetry

"Extras" is ready to move into the top 5 after another season.

Deadwood is very good IMO. I bought the last season on DVD to catch up because I kept missing it. The dialogue is really funny but you have to pay attention because a lot of it is subtle. It's actually a lot more sophisticated than you would expect from a bunch of yahoos (except for the creative swearing) but it adds something different.

I thought they were a cult that had spun off from the Mormons and preserved some of the old Mormon traditions. I remember reading somewhere that a lot of Mormons were unhappy with the way they were portrayed.

Your avatar is weakening my family values.

I think Big Love is Great. Here's How I would rate the HBO shows now:

1. Deadwood--almost as good as Sopranos used to be
2. Sopranos--still pretty darn good
3. Curb Your Enthusiasm--almost as good as Seinfeld
4. Rome--really good mostly, but a little cartoonish at times
5. Big Love--not as exciting as the others, but I'm hooked. Excellent characters, like Roman and Margie and the main character's mother.

I never have gotten into the Wire, but I always hear good things. I hated Entourage for some reason. I loved the Mind of the Married Man, and I might get even one day with whoever cancelled it.

I thought they were a cult that had spun off from the Mormons and preserved some of the old Mormon traditions. I remember reading somewhere that a lot of Mormons were unhappy with the way they were portrayed.

They believe the Mormans are not following the true word of god. You see, the Mormon religion was founded on polygamy. Its founder Joseph Smith was a polygamist, its second prophet Brigham Young had something like 28 wives.

The US goverment then steped in and said they would not allow Utah to become a state unless the mormons abolished polygamy. So suddenly the leaders of the church stepped in and had a "revelation" from god and got rid of the practice. Mormons still believe when they get to heaven they will have many wives if they reach the highest kingdom.

Polygamists still follow the book of mormon and have all the same beliefs as mormons.

Thanks for the info. That certainly would explain why many Mormans are not happy with the show and the way some of the polygamists are portrayed. Still, I find it entertaining!

I see a huge problem with polygamy... for the man!

Yeah, it sounds sweet, but just 1 nagging girlfriend/wife is enough. How a man could have double or triple the nagging, combined with the girlfriends/wives fighting amongst themselves is beyond me.

In bed with multiple girls is nice, but during the day I couldn't handle it, personally.

SO, this isn't an HBO programming show, but has anyone seen Rescue Me on FX? It has Dennis Leary, he's a fireman after 9/11.

I'm seriously hooked. One of the best shows on T.V. in my opinion. It seems like every episode does the fantastic job of drawing you in through relative situations.

And then, there's Battlestar Galactica. INCREDIBLE. That has got to be my absoLUTE new favorite show. Luckily, my very hot (and very nerdy) downstairs neighbor has all of the shows on DVD, so I've gotten to watch them all. She turned me on to one of the most incredible series ever produced.

The cast is amazing, the plots are insane, the special effects are delicious... every show leaves you on edge and clawing for the next one.

I wanted to start a Battlestar Galactica thread, but I haven't heard anyone else talking about it.

By the way, Big Love doesn't do it for me. Except I do find it comical when one of the wives crosses over into the whole morning sex routine then everybody gets pissed because she has "more time" than the others.

Living in Utah and not being Mormon, this show is great it puts the screws to the establishment. It is a taboo subject almost like when Brokeback Mountain was cancelled from the largest theatre chain in the state (the Jazz owner owns the theatre and it was his call) the "population" also got miffed when Micheal Moore came to town. The Mormons might have relinquished polygamy but in Utah their values still "live" in the 1800's. (a generalization but it true)

I like the Sopranos and Big Love the best. They are both interesting shows about extraordinary families.

The modernized Mormans are squabbling with the traditional Mormans. The main family appears normal and tries to hide their polygamy. The guy has three wives and one of them came from a polygamous family herself. Her family are the traditional polygamists in "prairie outfits." Her father, Roman, has like over 180 grandchildren! It's interesting to say the least.

No the dominant culture keeps away the riff raff,.so we can have this state to ourselves. Beautiful place with a weird culture. Kind of like being a baptist in Vatican City. I am not angry, just like to see the establishment shook up a bit!!! I love Utah just don't like the strangle hold the Mormons have on the Government and our drinking laws.
