"I am not basing my demotion of Knicks coach Larry Brown on this season alone. While he's had great success all over, he's also had too many missteps to be a "legendary'' coach. People make a lot out of him turning San Antonio from a 21-win team his first season into a 56-win team the next ('89), but the addition of David Robinson had more to do with that resurrection than Brown.
Then, in his fourth and final season in Indiana, Brown failed to get the Pacers into the playoffs. The next season, Larry Bird, who had never coached a game in his life, led those same Pacers to the conference finals.
And of course, there were the 2004 Olympics. Brown was as bad then as he has been this season. I know that team was poorly put together, but it still had two MVPs (Allen Iverson and Tim Duncan) and the four best young players in the world in LeBron James, Amare Stoudemire, Dwyane Wade and Carmelo Anthony.
Yet Brown hardly played the youngsters, even though Anthony was his best shooter and one of the few guys with extensive experience against a zone defense. James made something good happen every time he entered the game, yet he got few minutes.
Why not press fullcourt when depth and athleticism are your major advantages? Why not double team Carlos Arroyo to take the ball out of his hands instead of letting him single-handedly lift Puerto Rico over Team USA?
Even in Detroit, folks forget that Brown's Pistons had lost 7 of 8 games before trading for Rasheed Wallace. Detroit was already a two-time 50-win team that had made the conference finals under Rick Carlisle the year before Brown got there."
I always liked carlisle more than brown.

Larry Brown is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay overrated. Look at what the guy has done over his career. He has destroyed as many teams as he has helped. Plus, the guy is an arrogant jerk.

Where were these guys when Detroit first beat LA. I remember how tiring it was to listen to all these talking heads gush about how Brown was the best coach alive...Give me a break. He is good, but far from the best of his generation. But with these talking heads it is just flavor of the month. The Knicks are losing, lets bash Brown...The next NBA champ will have the best coach alive, just ask the talking heads ::) :nutkick

I see....well...it would seem that he was charged and plead guilty to giving alcohol to an underage drink while he himself was underage after the girls mis-represented their age. If you want to hang your agrument on that go ahead. And it turns out he didn't have a gun at all...merely a cell phone I believe...so I'll ask you again...what exactly are you talking about? I guess if another is just accused of being guilty it makes it so.

Because he stomped on that kid Dumervil...that's why he got kicked out. Otherwise...the citations against him in traffic are something that everybody gets all the time.
Sept. 2, 2003: Suspended for one game by coach Frank Beamer for undisclosed reason.
Feb. 17, 2004: Arrested without incident and charged with four misdemeanors -- three for allegedly allowing underage girls to have alcohol and one for allegedly having sex with a 15-year-old at a January party. Released on $2,500 bond.
May 14, 2004: Convicted of three counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor and sentenced to 30 days in jail and fined $2,250. Found not guilty of having sex with the 15-year-old.
July 3, 2004: Charged with reckless driving and possession of marijuana after a traffic stop about 25 miles east of Richmond, Va. at 2:30 a.m. Police said he was clocked at 86 mph, 21 mph above the speed limit, and that the vehicle smelled of marijuana.
July 6, 2004: Indefinitely suspended from football team for off-field problems.
Aug. 3, 2004: Suspended from the university for the 2004 season on same day he pleads guilty to reckless driving and no contest to marijuana possession in New Kent, Va. Is fined $300, has driver's license suspended for 60 days and is placed in a first offender program on the marijuana charge, requiring that he perform 24 hours of community service, undergo drug counseling and random drug tests, and give up his driver's license for six months.
Sept. 13, 2004: In plea deal, pleads no contest to one misdemeanor count of contributing to the delinquency of a minor. Receives 30-day suspended jail sentence, is fined $100, ordered to perform 24 hours of community service and stay away from the teenage girls.
Jan. 17, 2005: Cleared to rejoin football team and re-enroll at Virginia Tech.
Oct. 1, 2005: Leads No. 3 Hokies to 34-20 victory at West Virginia, and makes obscene gesture to fans who have been calling him names related to past problems throughout the game. He apologized a day later.
Dec. 17, 2005: Pulled over by police in Hampton, Va. for driving 38 mph in a 25 mph zone and driving with a suspended license.
Jan. 2, 2006: Leads Virginia Tech to a 35-24 win over Louisville in Gator Bowl. In the game, he stomped on the left calf of Cardinals All-American defensive end Elvis Dumervil, the NCAA sacks leader. Claims the incident was accidental and that he apologized to Dumervil, who denies ever receiving apology.
Jan 6, 2006: Is kicked off team at Virginia Tech for legal trouble and unsportsmanlike conduct in Gator Bowl.
Oh I see the reason he got kicked out of Virginia Tech had nothing to do with the dope or getting 14 years old drunk and fuuucking them. He stepped on a guys leg and Frank Bemer said, "we can't have that kind of conduct at Virginia Tech. Fuuucking junior high girls, driving with suspended licenses and smoking dope is perfectly acceptable. But we can't have guys steppin' on other players legs god damn it. We have a reputation to uphold."

I agree with the Brown comments...He sold out the upcoming youth for old beat up but get it done now veterens at most of his stops...so then he could beat his chest about turning around a team despite selling out the franchise future knowing full well he would jump ship quickly.
Also look no further than the fact the non-Rasheed Wallace Pistons were better with Rick Carlisle than with Brown...2 straight division championships...Carlisle goes to Indy and Brown takes over in Detroit and Carlisle again wins the central...Detroit then went out and bought a top notch player in Wallace late in the year that put them over the top in the playoffs and won the title but with the same talent they were better under Carlisle....Then take it a step further...the Rasheed Wallace version of the Pistons are now a lot better under Flip Saunders than they were under Brown.
And let us not forget his one main college accomplishment at Kansas was done on the dirty...he bolted town and got them put on probation.
He is anything but impressive in my eyes.

Well Marcus Vick is a pot smoking, gettin' jr. high girls drunk Virginia Tech QB if you want to be technical with it. Larry Brown is a good coach but his ego gets the best of him.
People blame the players for the 2004 Olympic Team for their downfall but Brown was outcoached on every game. And he does the immature thing in blaming the team - he rubs a lot of the players the wrong way.
I cant stand him anymore, he bounced around like a nomad and leaves every situation w/ drama.
He's the reason to me why we lost in the 2004 summer games (and the other countries play), not the players.

The greatest coaching/managing job in sports history in my opinion .... 1969 New York Mets - Gil Hodges. Outside of Tom Seaver, no really superstar players on that team. Actually if you compare position by position that team against the 69 Orioles, there is no comparison. Simply Amazing. By the way, I am a diehard Oriole fan from those days.

Larry Brown one of the greatest coaches of all time? What in the hell makes you or anybody else in this thread think that? His career winning percentage is barely over 550. Does that in anyway show signs of greatness? He has won one NCAA championship and one NBA championship. Are two championships greatness? If a 550 coaching record, two championships and 8 head coaching jobs define greatness then I don't know what to say. Greatness is measured through winning percentage and championships, not some trumped up ESPN media hyperbole.
