NOTE -- The NFL will announce today that the Miami Dolphins will play the Steelers to kick off the season Thursday night, Sept. 7, at Heinz Field. The Dolphins, who did not make the playoffs last season, last week acquired quarterback Daunte Culpepper from the Minnesota Vikings. The Steelers' players and coaches will receive their Super Bowl rings that night.

Shame. I thought the Broncos would be the front runners for that one as a rematch of the AFC CCG would be a good way to open up the season for the networks. The game in Pittsburgh will still be a Monday Nighter, I guess.

The Fins can start 0-1. :)

I predict that the lovely NFL schedule makers will now pair up trips to SD, KC, NE and Pitt all in December and January. They do this every f'n year.

i'm sure if we play a FLA team it will be in weeks 1-4 as well when the humidity is at its worst.

On the other hand, this means that the schedule will be out pretty soon. They usually let the opener slip about a week before they release the schedule.

We donīt play a team from Florida. The closest thing we have to a road trip to Florida next season temperature wise probably is the game against the Cardinals. I can really see this game being the Sunday Night Game now. Cards get a new stadium, they signed Edge ...

The price of tickets (since it is not the Banner raising game) just dropped significantly.

You have to make moves to try to better yourself in the offseason. Why would they want a team that got spanked at home by Pittsburgh and done nothing in the offseason, when they can get a team like Miami who ended the season on a run and have tried to get better?

Signed back all of our priority free agents. I suppose this is nothing.

Wow, Denver tried to remain the same team from last season. I forgot, what was the score of the Pitt-Den game last season?

We resigned all of our key free agents and Pittsburgh lost a bunch of theirs. We will add peices through the draft with multiple high 1st round picks.

I swear we don't go out and sign ego-maniacs like TO one offseason and everybody thinks we are doing anything to get better. THAT in itself makes us better.

Do you think Pittsburgh was better then us all season? They got red hot after they beat Indy. We had two really bad games last season... it just happened to week 1 against Miami and the last week of the year against Pittsburgh. I think if we would have played any other week we would have won. We were just flat and they were flying.

Pittsburgh loses key peices on the field in the locker room like Bettis, Randel El, and some of their DB's...

Denver will almost undoubtably get better at HB, TE, and even DE.

Your arguement is flawed and bitter because we missed out on some poor free agents like TO.

Chris is right that the broncos did do right in that they are for the most part are the same team for the most part . and this is a good thing . coach Shanahan never lets go someone unless he has someone on the team that can keep the production the same or better so in that part I belive he is kind of hoping thet the draft will pan something out in the draft it is kind of a crap shoot ...

I loved the play of putzs but they must realy belive in jackson or we would of hear of us realy after someone ......Jackson better be busting his ass off I hope the best for the guy !!!!!!

What Pittsburgh did means dick. Guess what? They won the Super Bowl last season, so they host the first game regardless of what they did this offseason. They could have gutted their team, and they'd still host that game.

Good, Denver will add multiple high pieces through the draft. That's what the NFL should base who should play the first game, who the Broncos might draft in April and how they might help the team.

And your's has no ground to stand on because you continue to compare what Denver did this offseason to what Pittsburgh did. It doesn't matter if Pittsburgh got hot at the right time. It doesn't matter if they lost some key players. The only thing that matters is that the Steelers are the defending SB Champions so they get the first game. Someone making a relevant argument would try to compare the Broncos and the 'Fins, since that's the team that is probably going to open up with the Steelers.

Pittsburgh got spanked in the AFC championship the year before against NE. They didn't make any big acquisitions last offseason and actually lost Burress (and Bell if you want to count him) in free agency.

To me, Denver got beat badly by Pittsburgh because things didn't go their way early in that game. They had a chance at multiple turnovers and just couldn't make the plays that they had been making all year. The running game was working early but had to be abandoned because of the early hole. I really don't think they are as far away as that score indicated.

I see your point as to why the networks wouldn't want to schedule Denver for this game.

Looks like a Golden Eagle. Definitely not a Peregrine . We have them (PF) on the ledges of our building (35th floor downtown Boston)all the time with dead Jays and pigeons . Pergrine photo.

From John Clayton's blog:

Broncos pass on opener: NBC wanted the Broncos to visit the Steelers on the first Thursday of the season as a rematch of the AFC championship game. Broncos owner Pat Bowlen balked, and the league talked the Dolphins into doing it. Bowlen thought it was too soon for the Broncos to play against the Steelers after losing the title game. The Bengals were another consideration for the opener, but Carson Palmer's knee situation made the Dolphins a more attractive option.

I guess I quoted the wrong post by Herc. I don't disagree with Herc's point about why the networks wouldn't want the Denver in the season opener, although it sounds like Bowlen is the one that didn't want it.

The first part of my post was meant to address the statement Herc made about a team having to make moves to try to better yourself in the offseason. I don't think the Broncos are as far away as the score in that game indicated and I think the best moves this offseason were internal.
