View Full Version : What could John Elway do with the current team?
Hey it's off season.
How would the receivers fare?
Would Putz still be here?
Would Watts and Ashlie be stars now?

With Elway, this team wouldn't be better than the Super Bowl teams of '97 and '98, but this team would win the Super Bowl.

We would win a double Super Bowl...not back-to-back...but a double. We would beat both teams from the NFCCG...as well as all teams in the divisional rounds.

Elway had a tremendous amount of talent around him when he won those two Super Bowls. Just compare the roster of those two teams to the one that went to the AFC championship last season.
RB Terrell Davis VS Mike Anderson/Tatum Bell
FB Howard Griffith VS Kyle Johnson
TE Shannon Sharpe VS Jeb Putizer
WR Ed McCaffery VS Ashley Lelile
WR Younger Rod Smith VS Older Rod Smith
T Gary Zimmerman VS Matt Lepsis
C Younger Tom Nalen VS Older Tom Nalen
TE Dewayne Carswell VS Stephen Alexander
Elway played with three possible hall of famers in Sharpe, Davis, and Zimmerman.
Plummer has played with an older Rod Smith and a bunch of developing players.
I don't think Elway could have won a Super Bowl with the team we had last year.

He'd be the Denver Broncos' version of Tedy Bruschi.

I think he could have. While the O might be different just having Elway would make MA/Bell better. It also would MAKE teams fear Lelie. The D we have now is better even without the pass rusher that we seem to be missing.

Elway simply being on the field would have changed the whole way defenses gameplan for us.
Right now, defenses are content stack the box, throw more tight coverage towards Rod and let Lelie go deep because Plummer isnt' asked to take risks and throw the ball long.
With Elway he was best at using his velocity on short to intermediate routes and did an excellent job of getting the ball into the right spot even if the WR was off in his route. That's why team so covet a guy with a cannon.
Basically Putz/Lelie would come into their own and we would have more matchups to exploit instead of just run, run, run, safe pass to Rod.

Elway could throw a football so hard that it would stop a WR's heart, killing him instantly. Then Elway would just look hard at the WR and he would come back to life and finish his route.

Is this a Elway current or Elway in his prime question?
Because I dont think we would win 8 games with Elway in his current shape.

Elway once threw a ball so fast that it broke the time barrier and struck down Amelia Ehrhart's plane, killing her. She only stayed dead because she wasn't running a pattern. That's why they should allow women in pro football.

Elway only gives the appearance of feebleness with age so as not to embarrass Dan Marino and Joe Montana.

Great thread! I think the same as someone else said on here, they would win the Super Bowl but not be as good as then '97 '98 team.
That Pittsburgh game would've been very, very different.

Are we talking about a 14" Elway or a regular sized Elway? The mini-Elway would make the game more interesting.

I agree that Lelie would a much bigger thread with John tossing the ball and that alone would have been a huge difference maker. Not to mention John's ability to read the field so much better than Jake. He did not see open receivers quite often since he has been here.
Well it's better than another TO thread...

Because of expansion and free agency, I don't think it's fair to compare the 97 and 98 team to the current team. It takes less talent to win now than it did then.
Considering we got to the AFC Championship Game with Jake, I'm pretty sure John would've won it for us last year.

Of course there was free agency then but that 97-98 team was the last true dominant team the NFL ever saw, IMO. Free agency was still a relatively new concept too.

the patriots were pretty dominant. I mean winning three SB's, but our 97-98 team would monkey stomp them.

Like I said before, the '97 and '98 teams would have been clearly better, but Elway would have still won with this team. If you think that a great QB like Elway could not have made the difference on a team that made it to the AFC title game, then you are saying that no QB could have helped this team win two more games.
Elway would of had less talent to work with, but he would have played against teams that had overall less talent.
I don't think there is any question that Elway would have won with t his team.

That's like asking if the Colts could finally win it if Johnny U (in his current state) was the QB instead of Peyton Manning.
I just assumed it meant Elway during his playing days.

You had to go and ask that one. I'm stumped. I can't even think right.
I'll put it like this. If that team can blow teams out with Bubby Brister at QB, then they'd beat damn near anybody. So I'd have to say the '98 Broncos with Plummer. Just too much talent. Not many weaknesses, if you'd even call them weaknesses. If your weakest position is CB, with Crockett and Gorden, then you must be pretty damn good. Crockett was a borderline Pro Bowl player, and Gorden was decent/good on this team.

The Oline back then vs the Oline now isn't close, that was a very dominant Oline especially 97 team with Zim and stink on the left and habib and Jones on the right.

The defense is alot better though. It's a tough call on how good this team would be.

Elway would win Super Bowls with this team because of the defense. The offense wouldn't be as good as '97, '98, but it'd be good enough, that's for damn sure.
