Troy Brown resigned with the Pats.
Boston, Pathon and Price, but neither of those guys is any better than what we already have. The Buffalo Peerless Price would be a nice #2 as would the 2001 David Boston.

I'm thinking if Denver doesn't use a a pick in the first or 2nd round on a wr than Boston would be a great fit in Denver. He wouldn't have to be depended on like he was in the past and he can just come in and play.
He is a huge target and definatley creates mismatches.

Proehl will retire. A bunch of his Panther teammates had to camp in his garden last summer before he finally relented and returned for his 17th NFL season. I wish we would have acquired this guy earlier. One of the great clutch players of his era. Sort of a Robert Horry type athlete.

there looks like there are some serviceable UFA available at DE
The guys left that I'd have interest in:
Stephen Neal OG UFA Patriots
Sam Adams DT UFA Bills Released by Bills on 3/1/06
Grady Jackson DT UFA Packers
Damion McIntosh OT UFA Dolphins Released on 3/1/2006
Maurice Morris RB UFA Seahawks

This wasn't a very good FA crop, a lot of guys got overpaid by teams just planning for '06. If some of the guys above are available for reasonable prices though they'd be intersting acquisitions.

I like Garry Walker ,a inside pass rusher and Allen ,who could start at Rg. Maybe add Ty Law to start at corner and keep foxworth and William as Nickle and Dime corners.

Kevin Johnson. Ok, I know he was a Brown....but the guy had a 84 catch 1000 yard 9td season in '01 (with the browns). Since then he has been passed around to a coupla bad teams and wound up on Detroit last year......along with 3 first round picks (Williams, Williams, and Rogers). Worth a look, IMO....if we are just picking up depth......and a possible #3.

How is it easy to address? What names are out there?
Requiem
03-24-2006, 09:23 AM
Yeah, don't even bother. No quality free agents at DT that would really help us on our team. Don't tell me we need to get a veteran of 9-12 years when we need youth at the position.

Last year we had Warren, Myers, and Veal as our DT's basically.
We have them returning this year and these guys are still available:
Gary Walker
Brentston Buckner
Ron Edwards
Travis Hall
Antonio Cochran
Steve Martin
Kenny Smith

Sorry I have other things to do then sit down and come up with an obvious answer to your question.
We need youth? Warren (28), Myers (30), and Veal (25)?
And Gordon (25).
Requiem
03-24-2006, 09:37 AM
Veal is still a free agent and Gordon is a piece of ****. What has he done in the NFL that makes him a good option for us at tackle?
Also, I'm still laughing at the players you mentioned that are "quality" and would be good for our team. Bahaha.
Requiem
03-24-2006, 09:44 AM
Gary Walker is old, fat and slow. Not to mention he's missed eighteen games the past three years. What, he's 33 too?
Brentson Buckner is 35 years old. My bet is he retires. Nice try though.
Ron Edwards is injury prone. He's had one good year. I think I'll pass on a guy who is twice as likely to go on IR than to get one sack in a season.
Travis Hall? You're joking right. You want another 34+ year old lineman? Damn, these are some quality guys you're giving us.
Cochran would be probably the best option, but how many games did play last year? Also, he played DE.
Steve Martin? He's played for like 7 teams. Does that tell you something?
Kenny Smith? You're ****ing kidding right? He's played zero games the last two years. I think I just died laughing.
Good job, I think you just dropped my NFL IQ by twenty points. Talk about quality guys in free agency, eh!?
Rascal
03-24-2006, 09:49 AM
I don't care if you are laughing or not.
We had an excellent run defense last year with Warren and Myers leading the charge so I, and basically everybody but you, see no reason to work on that issue when we have more glaring needs at DE. We could work on the depth issue, but considering in years past we've done quite well with Fatafehi, Johnson, and Pope I am not concerned about our starters.
In case you missed it, which apparently you have, our biggest problem on defense was a pass rush. And Lang is not a significant improvement in that area and people's blidn faith in Jackson, Engelberger, Vaughn, or Gause to create that pass rush is moronic at best. Our best DE's (Brown and Ekuban) are rush oriented DE's. Lang is the only one with any kind of pass rushing ability.
You go ahead and worry about that #2 rush defense while I and everybody else worry about the pass defense that had nobody with more then 4 sacks one of which was our SAFETY and the other one has LEFT!!!

Dude, settle down!
Name a Defensive Lineman on the roster from two Years AGO! Wait, you can not can you? What does that tell you? They are in the process of revamping the entire DL. Processes are NOT accomplished in a week or two. They take more time usually.
Rascal is entitled to believe his opinion and probably does not have the time to reasearch the way you did to his post. Guy was just making suggestions that you asked for and then you blow up like that? Nice!
You do not have to agree with him, that is what this board is all about, but at least have a little class.

Since when does your backup DT's need to be young?
Look back at 2005, 2004 and see how many young DT's we had.
And we don't need allstars at DT...when just need serviceable people to give the STARTERS some rest.

You do not have to agree with him, that is what this board is all about, but at least have a little class.
Had he not called me an idiot, I probably would have not said the thing about twenty IQ points dropping. However the names he mentioned, are embarassing and go to show more than him not having enough time to research these players.

Nice!

We have our starters established along the DT area in Warren and Myers. We don't need young players behind them. We need savy veterans that can come in do a good job while the starters get a breather.

You basically insulted me the post before I called you idiot. If you want bitch about that you need to develop some thicker skin.
You want a young stud DT...whereas I don't. The players I mentioned would do a good job as a backup DT which is what we need. We don't need a young DT to develop (oh wait we have one in Veal).
Requiem
03-24-2006, 09:59 AM
Since when does your backup DT's need to be young?
Look back at 2005, 2004 and see how many young DT's we had.
And we don't need allstars at DT...when just need serviceable people to give the STARTERS some rest.
I'd like for them to be young. As you stated Myers is 30. At best, he is an adequate defensive lineman and there could certainly be an upgrade over him.
Perhaps that's a problem with the pass rush... the age of the players playing the position? Perhaps their old age doesn't allow them to do so?
I whole-heartedly agree that we need a pass rusher off the edge who can rack up some big sack numbers, but we also need an undertackle to pair up underneath Warren who can cause some havoc as well. Myers is strong against the run, and barely 'average' against the pass. I like Veal and he was pretty impressive for a guy I didn't even expect to make the roster last year, however he's still an RFA -- have we even made an offer to him yet?
I disagree with you. It's not that I think we need an All-Star guy, however we need an impact player there. Defensive tackles are crucial parts to the line itself. A lot of the pass rush artists are undertackles in systems that are paired up two a huge NT who's taking up two gaps. Kevin Williams is a prime example.

Sorry, but rascal calling you an idiot is a sign of affection ;D Just check out the Survivor thread.
This team has been well above average with Street FA's who are out of the NFL Starting at DT with Coyer at the helm. Never once below top 6 against the run.
I respect your opinon about the need for a few more bodies at DT. However, they have a long time to address that and always do. Fatefehi and Holland were brought in During Training camp and became starters.

And yes...you are still an idiot.
The players you mentioned are ones you've probably never seen play and are just names you threw up to try and formulate the argument with. Half of the guys you mention are on the verge of retirement, (see how there has been no interest in them either) and the others spend or have spent most of their season on IR. Bull**** on good back-ups, those guys are far from it.
I like Veal a lot, however he's a RFA, have we offered him a contract, is he back on the team, will he be on the team? As I stated now, we have two guys on our roster, one of them (Myers) is an average starter and could be upgraded.
Talk about ACQB, you're by far the worst.

Which is my point. We have good run stopping defensive tackles, but we lack a nice pass-rusher. A lot of the teams who are consistently getting pressure on the quarterback have a guy like that. Also, our run defense also has to do a lot with the linebackers we have, who by far make more plays in that respect than our lineman do. However, it's nice having a guy like Warren in there, who can take up two gaps and allow our LB's to make plays. (Al Wilson has said that numerous times.)
Thank you for the respect, the same goes to you as well. Yes, they have time to address the need; but there isn't any quality person out there, even a veteran in free agency who would be that good for our team. We need more than a few journeymen at the position, which for several years now are what most of our lineman have been. Average journeymen. We need more than that.

DT's are one of the key positions let go after june first cuts as well.
It's all good to disagree, let's just try to be somewhat civil about it or big brother is going to pass some kind of bill to stop it;D

Whatever.
Sure DT could be upgraded...but at the cost of upgrading our DE's or another position. Like Med mentioned we were able to use off the street FA's in Holland and Fatafehi in years past as our STARING DT'S!! Warren makes up for the both of them and Myers who is not an all-star (never said he was) is above average and with our defense that is all that is needed.
They weren't just named I threw up to make an argument with. I looked at them and thought...hey this guy would probably come at a cheap price and is good enough that he can give Myers or Warren a breather during the game. You say otherwise...I don't care. It's your opinion and you are entitled to it.

No, I infact stated that we do need a guy who can rush off the edge and put up big numbers. However, when I go back to '03 and '04 -- we had guys like Hayward and Berry who were putting up solid sack numbers off the edge. Too bad we let them go.

Myers is average. Part of what you say is my point. Perhaps we could have more success pass rushing if we didn't use average lineman as our starting defensive tackles because "we can" since they're effective against the run in the system we run.
Since I've been here, I've stated how big I am on getting a END and TACKLE to help our team. I'm not ignoring end like you think I am.

I never claimed Myers was good. With Warren and two solid DE's we should be able to rush the passer much better then in years past. I think Lang could be one of those guys, but none of the others guys IMO have that ability.
I didn't say we should ignore DT, in fact you jumped all over me when I said we should bring in some of the DE's available that I mentioned and you assumed I meant we should ignore DT. It's just that IMO we should focus on getting better DE's more so then better DT's.

Engleberger has put up some decent numbers with the 49ers at DE. When they went 3-4 that made him expendable. Perhaps he could go back a few years and help us get 4-6.5 sacks, I'd dig it.
