The MATHEMATICAL outcome of who won the trade ....

Kaylore has provided the standard draft pick numerical value chart that NFL teams use to evaluate trades, so this is a BIAS-FREE judgment of the trade.

FALCONS GET
2006 First Round #29: . . . . 640 points
2006 Third Round #93: . . . .128
2007 Fourth Round #125 . . . 47
Total Points to the Falcons : 815

BRONCOS GET
2006 First Round #15: . . . . 1050 points
Total Points to the Broncos: 1050

Just like Super Bowl XXXIII .... a blowout.

We won't actually know who won for a couplla years, but this is how the teams figure things .... http://www.theredzone.org/2005/draft/draftvaluechart.asp

A chart like that has been posted before but this is a link to an external webiste which means we have a chance to actually remember where it is! Thanks for that...

Just goes to show that the Falcons wanted Abraham baaaaad...

Thing is, you look at the stats and the biggest problem Atlanta had last year was stopping the run. They were middles of the pack in terms of sack and INTs, bu t ranked extremely low against the run. You might have thought they woudl have had more interest in getting some big bodies in the middle than in paying 15 mil a year for a pass-rush specialist.....

It won't matter squat until we draft someone worth it.

In recent trades we got Bell and Champ from Portis so I guess that was in our favour.

Last year we drafted Paymah, and this year's fourth and 22nd overall for the skins to get Campbell. Hopefully we won't fug it up.

Oh and Karl, STEP IT UP!

2007 Fourth Round #125 . . . 47

We don't know the # of our 2007 4th round pick. It wouldn't be valued at 47 points either. Future picks are worth less in equal drafts. This deep draft makes that 2007 pick even less valuable.

Interesting .... next year's pick is less valuable. Makes sense.

Khan and I discussed what draft position to project for next year's pick, btw .... but the difference between fourth round pick numbers 26-29-32 is just 50 - 47 - 44. So it doesn't change much at all. Even if we drop to #20 - its just 16 more points.

I think the rule of thumb is to subtract a round for next year to make pick #125 worth about 28 points.

So what is this, the 10th time someone has posted the trade value chart that fans go by but teams don't to say Denver won the trade?

The chart is a reference for fans and teams. However, just like the real world those picks have different values to different teams.

Maybe some here will finally get why those First round Picks Were SHOPPED to some undisclosed NFC teams. They were Shopped as a precursor to estimate their legit trade value. They were also shopped to see what a future first rounder in 2007 would be worth to other potential trading partners.

This is another shrewd use of resources that the FO has become quite adept at making something out of nothing to the rest of us. You have to offer something to see what the value of it is to somebody else. You will never know if you do not ask!

Multiple picks in this draft are probably carrying extra weight in trade circles since its so deep. Falcons probably had that in mind when they made the move, though I still think its very much in our favor.

This is true.

But another factor was the sheer number of draft picks we had available!

Prior to the trade with Atlanta, Shanahan was looking at 8 or 9 draft picks depending on whether we got one or two comp picks. Considering that this team is pretty well rounded off 8-9 rookies weren't all going to make the final cutdown so it made some sense to use our extra picks to move up. Right now we have 5 draft picks + compensation picks. Five of them in the first four rounds.

That trade equation doesn't take into account Abraham so it's not entirely accurate.

The trade also makes Abe worth two first round picks. Culpepper went for a second rounder.

Denver had the 25th pick last year so they also moved up three spots in the draft.

Okay .... but why the heck are FUTURE picks worth more than RIGHT NOW picks?! How can that be?

That trade equation doesn't take into account Abraham so it's not entirely accurate.
Well, Abraham is irrelevant to us. This was NOT an actual 'three-way' trade. It was 2 'two-way' trades made simultaneously.

The Broncos and Jets had no connection, and what the Falcons did with the picks we gave them doesn't really matter to us, does it?
