Some of you may recall that Sports Illustrated somehow found out about our tailgate group. Last year they sent a photographer out the weekend of the home KC game. They ended up taking several hundred pictures. They sent me a few of them and I'll put some more up when I have a chance.
Anyhow they are going to do a story on the bus and our tailgate group in the fall issue of Sports Illustrated! They called me this afternoon and asked me some basic questions about the bus and started to ask me questions about the tailgate. Being that our tailgate is a combination of local tailgaters and online tailgaters I told Sports Illustrated I thought it made more sense to throw their questions to the group via the Orangemane. They agreed.
So here are the questions SI wants your input on. Some of you may recall we did the same thing for Hooters Magazine and they ended up picking quotes out that they wanted to use. It worked out great!
Please take a second to answer some of these questions or tell a story about your tailgate experience. Some of your answers will end up in this falls Sports Illustrated!
What are your favorite tailgate traditions, either on and before gameday?
What makes for the ultimate tailgate?
What makes tailgating in Denver and/or with the Orange Force One crew so unique?
Any favorite tailgating recipes--either food or drink mixes?
Any advice for tailgaters hoping to get as much out of the experience as you do?

Yes. Don't worry Sassy. They have several hundred pics. Infact here is a bit of the letter they sent me.
Steve,
"Great talking to you earlier. As promised, here are a handful of images from last fall's shoot that we really like. There are some others like this--like I said, we have maybe 300 in all--but this is a good sampling. Take a look and if you don't mind, spell out the names of anyone pictures, plus anyone from your core group who might be missing in these particular shots."
I'm sure they are going to use more than just this one pic Sassy. I'm sure you made it in some others.
This article is about more than just this one tailgate though so if you've been to any of the others over the last couple years please put your 2 cents in!

Thanks for the input so far guys. B-love I must say that is one sweet pic there. We've had the pleasure of doing some fun things with OF1 but that ride to the game with your boys does rank up near the top as one of my favorite moments so far. I don't know exactly how all this is going to work but I'll definetly forward this thread to Sports Illustrated and they can do with it as they see fit.
I need to give a little love to the guys who built the bus. This pic was taken Sept 13th 2004. The day after the first tailgate with OF1. You can still see the mess in the front yard from the last minute things we were still working on. That's scrappy in the middle. He made the trip with us from Tucson. I've known some of these dudes since 1983. Thanks fellas.

Pre-Game at the "Barn" (Orange Force One's garage)
What makes for the ultimate tailgate?
People make a tailgate. Politics, Religion, all the other things that seperate people dissappear on Sunday, it's all about our team.
What makes tailgating in Denver and/or with the Orange Force One crew so unique?
Once again the people, as great as the bus is in the end it is only transportation, the community of fans is what makes it great.
Any favorite tailgating recipes--either food or drink mixes?
Carne Asada is the house speciality, I make a mean spicy BBQ sauce, Sloppers (open faced cheeseburger smothered in green chile) and during training camp Disco and I invented-Tater Dogs

What makes for the ultimate tailgate?
It's about the group you are with. The online community we've built helps keep fans in touch coast to coast. You meet guys that come from all over the country to go to games and though you've never actually met, the Orangemane.com as already made you friends.
What makes tailgating in Denver and/or with the Orange Force One crew so unique?
The bus is more than a tailgating unit. It was our base of operations during training camp. We were able to watch training camp and take notes, then walk two minutes out into the parking lot and type up what we saw on the Orangemane via satelite internet access. We had the latest camp reports before the local news aired and it was more detailed (and more accurate.) A boon to people who don't live in an around the Denver area.
Any favorite tailgating recipes--either food or drink mixes?
Hotwings, BBQ Chicken
Any advice for tailgaters hoping to get as much out of the experience as you do?
Be respectful. Try and contribute. A lot of people will mooch, get drunk, and try and trash the bus. That ruins it for everyone. Try and tailgate with people you know and get involved. A good group will usually respect each other enought to keep things fun and you'll enjoy yourself more if you're personally involved in some way.
Name one piece of tailgating gear you can't live without and why?
My Champ Bailey Jersey. It's lucky and I'm undefeated at games I've attended.

What are your favorite tailgate traditions, either on and before gameday?
As others have cited, the evening-before-gameday party at Meck's has been a big highlight and heaping disrespect on an item of "enemy" apparel... like a jersey or shirt sets a nice tone for gameday.
What makes for the ultimate tailgate?
Spending quality time with friends over good food and cold beers.
What makes tailgating in Denver and/or with the Orange Force One crew so unique?
It's unique because they are unusually devoted to the team and the sport of football. They truly go "the extra mile" on gameday.
Any favorite tailgating recipes--either food or drink mixes?
Beer and brats are great...
Any advice for tailgaters hoping to get as much out of the experience as you do?
Get to the parking lot early... and be prepared to have a killer case of laryngitis the next day. If you still have a voice after the game, you didn't yell enough.
Name one piece of tailgating gear you can't live without and why?
Have to agree with AK... the beer cozy is a necessity to keep the hand warm and the beer cold.
How far do you travel for Broncos tailgates?
Round trip? 2200 miles.
What do you love most about the tailgating experience?
The shared camaraderie of celebrating a Broncos victory with other fans who are just as passionate about the team as I am.

The pleasure was ours Steve. Off the charts memories for these kids. I actually just coached our Pee Wee Blues Dek Hockey team, and the four kids in the front row in my Bus photo, were also on my Dek Hockey team.
They actually asked if a St Louis Blues bus was coming to take them to a game.
Props to all of your crew for their incredible work. I will only get to take advantage and enjoy it once/year in all likelihood, but I will enjoy it to the max each time.

I haven't attended anything with any Maner's ever. Too bad for me. I've been...um...busy! Yeah. I am answering this from the perspective of season ticket holder who hasn't been to a live football game in three years. I was at the last game at Mile High and remember singing "We are family" with the south stands maniacs as they tore apart the stands. It's kind wierd cum ba yah moment swaying side to side with a guy holding a 12 foot chunk of the South Stands, a chair or a big sign. What I would give for a hunk of that sod now. When Meck first started these tailgates I was really happy to see somebody stepping up. This, for me, is the biggest part of being a fan. I think the one thing I would love to do the most as a fan is go to all the Broncos away games for a year just to say that I did. That trip to NYC I would have loved to have been on win or lose.
What are your favorite tailgate traditions, either on and before gameday?
---Frisbee, barbecue, micro beers and sitting at a poker table taking other people's pennies. I am the penny poker king! I have a bad habit of bringing office work and getting the jump on Monday.
What makes for the ultimate tailgate?
---Good people and dominant home field advantage. As a season ticket holder I like letting people use the tickets while I enjoy the roomy seating outside the stadium. It's fun watching a kid's eyes lightup because he gets to go to the game.
What makes tailgating in Denver and/or with the Orange Force One crew so unique?
---I have never attended one of these in person but you can see by the level of enthusiasm that it's something worthwhile attending. The conversation ABOUT the tailgate is always fun. It's good stuff all around.
Any advice for tailgaters hoping to get as much out of the experience as you do?
---Learn your way around Denver to such an extent that the term shortcut is meaningless. Develop a near psychic connection with the local weatherman. He who parks well partys well. Never pray for the Broncos to win God will only piss you off. Turn on radio announcer. Turn the volume down on the television. Remember be kind to the Raider fans. They came a long way to get embarassed publicly.
Name one piece of tailgating gear you can't live without and why?
---Jake Plummer jersey. It's one of the best conversation pieces a man can have. I want to see Jake win a Superbowl. I came to Iraq because of Tillman. I closed my company to do this deal. I believe in Jake and respect him for the kind of person he is. He stands by his friend.
How far do you travel for Broncos tailgates?
---I don't know if Iraq counts. It's kind of a wierd tailgate at 0300 in the morning. No beer. No sandwiches. No frisbee. Just 5 guys dressed in beige in a near trance like state (largely because it's 0300) chanting in near gregorian cadence "Go Broncos".
What do you love most about the tailgating experience?
---Familiarity. When the new stadium was built that destroyed the tailgating experience. The old familiar friends in the South stands were scattered to the winds and I was around strangers. I've been gone from Colorado for awhile but everything I see is that tailgating is alive and well. I look forward to getting back and renewing traditions.

What are your favorite tailgate traditions, either on and before gameday?
Gotta love when Meck & Disco get the crowd going with some inspired words and little bit of WOOOOO!!!
What makes for the ultimate tailgate? Good people, good food and plenty of beer.
What makes tailgating in Denver and/or with the Orange Force One crew so unique? They have every aspect covered, no matter what situation may come up they have a solution. I have never met people so prepared for anything.
Any favorite tailgating recipes--either food or drink mixes?
Anything that BroncoBum is grilling always seems to hit the spot. A litttle swig of Jack Daniels from Disco and some jellow shots never hurt as well. Can't forget the Coors Light, nothing better than Rocky Mountain water....Any advice for tailgaters hoping to get as much out of the experience as you do? Make sure you meet as many people as possible, I have met some great people over the past couple of years.
Name one piece of tailgating gear you can't live without and why?
Gotta have the Jersey- used to be Al Wilson but after the Giants game I was forced to retire it, now I pimp a #16 In JAKE WE TRUST
How far do you travel for Broncos tailgates? Wherever....
What do you love most about the tailgating experience? Meeting new people,I think it is amazing that people you have nothing in common with except for the fact that you are bronco fans can instantly become friends. No matter where you are from, what you do, if you root for the orange & blue then you are family.

Any favorite tailgating recipes--either food or drink mixes?
JELLO SHOTS AND LOBSTER! oh yeah and pig!

here are my answers from Orange County California
What are your favorite tailgate traditions, either on and before gameday?
Must wear your Broncos jersey and wear the same one every tailgate party so others recognize you.
What makes for the ultimate tailgate?
Passion for the team, great food, lots of adult beverages and the fans from all over the country that has the same love for your team.
What makes tailgating in Denver and/or with the Orange Force One crew so unique?
The Broncos make it a friendly competition of who has the best tailgate party game in and game out (The award "Most Valuable Tailgater"). Add OF1 of 100 fans that know each other daily from the Orangemane website and you got one of the most unique groups that can make a good Sunday the Best. Plus, when was the last time you saw a hot tub at a tailgate party?
Any favorite tailgating recipes--either food or drink mixes?
The first one I came on at OF1 was the Pig roast in 2004. Why would I want to party somewhere else when Meck offers some choice meat to a hungry out of towner? oh, you must add beer to anything grilling.
Any advice for tailgaters hoping to get as much out of the experience as you do?
You must start early in the day and be prepared with food, drinks, shelter and great fans regardless if they are rooting for the same team or not.
Name one piece of tailgating gear you can't live without and why?
My beer opener on my key chain. I just dont have the time to wait and see if someone can open my beer. It shows lack of enthusiasm for my beer if I dont bring the appropriate equipment to pop that top off!
How far do you travel for Broncos tailgates?
I come from Orange County , California so its about 900 miles and I go every year to San Diego for the biggest Broncos' tailgate outside of Denver.
What do you love most about the tailgating experience?
Without a doubt it is the friends you meet at a tailgate party. All different walks of life, but on Sunday, it is about the Broncos and the passion other fans go through to make the tailgatting experience top notch. Someone else cooking doesnt hurt either!

well, we all know i USED to travel 7 hours each way (had to work saturday and monday in new mexico) to get to the tailgates, but that is no more, and thanks to meck for helping make that happen.
we couldnt be happier being back home.
as for the rest, to me its all about the people.
its like "cheers".
we're going somewhere where everyone knows us.
somehwere where we have a common passion and a common goal.
somewhere where we are surrounded by others who share our obsession.
somewhere that we can call "home".
meck has made that possible, and disco and the many others that help him do so deserve more credit than we could ever give them.
the tailgate to me feels like one big family, and i for one am damn proud to be a part of it.

Although I only made it once and that was after the party had broken up, I can say that the best part of what I experienced was the compraderie and the chance to meet some fellow Bronco fanatics. Of course, the beer wasn't bad either! Next time I plan on being there early enough to enjoy some of the BBQ too!

....and as far as traditions (superstitions) go, there are just too many to list them all.
flag on the same window of the car.
the EXACT same parking spot in pepsi center (7 spaces over from a lightpole)
the same jerseys, hats, UNDERWEAR, socks, etc.
the knocking on wood, the hats sideways when we need a big drive, and the orange crush at the tailgate.
the list just goes on and on like the energizer bunny.
im very superstitious.

They definetly have some quotes to pick from. It will be interesting to see how the article turns out! It's interesting seeing all the different perspectives.
Thanks for the input.
Just a few more months and we'll be grilling it up in the parking lot at Dove Valley for training camp. KHAN live.......watch out!

When Meck bought that bus out of mothballs, I thought he was crazy...but I guess he's just infected with Broncomania (an incurable condition). I figured he would tear out some seats and get out 100 cans of Krylon in orange, strap down a keg and roll. I was wrong. It's a rolling palace.
