Tom Nalen speaks on why patriots wont attract any quality freeagents
early this morning my cousin (BC/ foxboro high grad) got a call from foxboro native tom nalen (broncos) and he puts the call on speaker phone so I can hear they've been good friends for almost their whole lives. so anyways the discussion turns into nalen playfully razzing my cousin about the patriots lack of moves and losing good players. my cousin then asks him "as a player how are the patriots viewed by freeagents " and he says something like "football players from every team are like a fraternity so we talk to eachother about whats going on, and honestly, nobody I've talked to wants to go to new england because they have no clue what the heck is going on down there ." there was a brief pause and my cousin asks "thats it?"

nalen without hesitation says"a certain degree of loyalty gets franchises a long way and the patrots are looked at as a cold hearted team. " so my cousin asks him "why havent the pats talked to many freeagents when they have $20M to spare?" the answer kind of shocked me. his answer was "Trust me they've talked to tons of freeagents you've just havent heard it because thats how they operate, I know of 4 or 5 great freeagents that have been contacted by the pats front office one way or another and they've turned down the pats over the phone and didnt even bother flying into foxboro to hear what they have to offer. players are reluctant to even bother with the pats this year because you cant use them as leverage because they undervalue you and you dont want to play there because of their unwillingness to pay" so to end this part of the discussion my cousin asks him "If you were a free agent would you consider the pats " his answer "I'll tell you this much, as much as I would love to be back in my hometown , they wouldnt even be in my top 10 places to land"

20 mill to spare is a lot. But like Eagles GM said, "Always need at least 15 mil for a rainy day"

I realized my information might start a world wide conflict so I deleted the post. Hopefully nobody else sees this thread. It's always the cousin who has the goods.

Makes alot of sense. They have no idea what they're doing. They have only won 3 out of 5 superbowls....???

Undervalue players ? Maybe other teams overvalue them.....

yep, 3 out of 4 championships is a clear sign that they have no idea what they're doing...maybe nalen should fine himself.

The dude who responded that Nalen would go for his biggest payday since he's near the end of his career needs to look at what TN signed for last month.

I don't see the surprise here. It's been my impression that the Pats were known for being frugal/cheap vis a vis free agents - there's and others. The two most notable additions they made were Harrison, who signed cheap as I recall, and Dillon, who I recall there was some give and take as to how they'd fit him in.

The folly of free agency is seen in the chorfs defense. A team might could fill a hole with renting a guy like Sharpe or Dillon, but it's not a way to build. DE's are a sellers market.

I think what he meant is the free agents have no clue . . .

Nobody can argue that that franchise is as well run as any in the league, but only certain types of players are going to want to go there.

A me-first, money-grabbing flava clown is not going to want to go there.

That's how I read it too. That the players on the market have no idea what's going on down there in Foxboro.

Considering that they couldn't even hold on to Vinatieri makes me think there's got to be some truth in there.

I agree I mean how hard can it be to retain a kicker? Especially as one as good as Vinatieri. The Pats had plenty of cap space they should have just made him the highest paid kicker in the league and done away with it.

Patswin is probably embarrassed by what is going on.

They've been able to get away with paying cheap contracts and picking up multitudes of FA in the past because it was obvious a player could possibly get a SB ring. But I think some saw last year as the evidence that the party is over......especially those that didn't buy the fact that it was the "injuries" that did in the Pats and that the Pats "really" did beat Denver....and now it's either the money or bye bye.

Well we have offical found the Anti-Redskins and it the Pats. When football players think of Danny Boy and his team they think "Money, I'm getting paid", when they think Kraft they think mac and cheese.

I posted to some pats fan that the reason they were able to hold the "dynasty" thing was that with Brady coming out of nowhere at a young age, they had a huge cap boon early on. Then, they did have a good scheme to let their inside backers and dbacks walk, because Billichicks defensive scheme relies on the NT, whom they replaced at least twice, and the ability of Seymour and McGinist to get pressure. But, I think their show is over. Still a dangerous team, as Brady's learned to throw deep.

They're prolly being smart keeping that cap money free, and letting guys walk, cause they'll need draft picks and some retooling before regaining elite status. In retrospect, I think we all wish shanny had did that rather than bringing in Dale Carter.

It was also to their benefit that Tom Brady took way less money to stay in Foxboro than he could have gotten on the open market.
