I run Spybot and Ad-Aware (http://www.download.com/Ad-Aware-SE-Personal-Edition/3000-8022_4-10399602.html?tag=pop). Sometimes, one will pick up something the other will miss.

I run both those as well, they work real well with each other. I also use Avast for anti-virus. No problems in two years.

And by the way, Norton users - Norton SUCKS! It's like the AOL of Internet Security. It is the most expensive, and it sucks your computer's memory.
It was all I used up until about a year ago, when I decided to try ZoneAlarm. ZoneAlarm takes up far less memory, costs less, and it works faster and more smoothly. I have five computers in my home - three use ZoneAlarm and two use Panda.
I am a better person, and my family is a better family - all since we got rid of Norton.
We won the lottery, as soon as we got rid of Norton.
My son hasn't missed an answer on a spelling test, since we got rid of Norton.
I don't get that embarrassing itch, since I got rid of Norton.
If Norton was soft, I'd use it to wipe my butt. If it was absorbant, I'd use it to soak up my puppy's urine. If... If... If...

I'll echo those sentiments....I wouldn't go as far to say that it's life changing....but it certainly helps with those nasty pop-ups.
I've got McAfee Security Suite 8 - but the anti-spyware is no better than any of the free ones you get.

I have five computers in my home - three use ZoneAlarm and two use Panda. This is the ONLY guy here who knows what he is talking about. Norton is absolutely positively bad, Norton is the Boston Red Sox of the anti-virus programs. It had one good year that masked the years upon years upon years of losses... er bad programs.
Here is the thing about anti-viruses, they all may do their job, but none of them do them completly. Why wait until a virus or a piece of spyware infests your computer when you can block it before it gets in and does its damage? ZoneAlarm has by far, the best firewall on the market. It keeps the bad programs out before they get in, thus eliminating the true need for anti-virus or anti-spyware protection. I still would advise using one, and scanning once a month but that is all you will need.
ZoneAlarm Free Firewall (http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/company/products/znalm/freeDownload.jsp?dc=12bms&ctry=US&lang=en)
Avast Free Anti-Spyware (http://files.avast.com/iavs4pro/setupeng.exe)

Spybot Search And Destroy Free Anti-Spyware (http://fileforum.betanews.com/sendfile/1043809773/1/spybotsd14.exe)

*Recomneded*
ZoneAlarm Security Suite 15 day trial Free firewall, anti-virus, and anti-spyware (http://s23.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=0VEIA29239K0U12IVZVVDWX2J8)
*Recomended*
This program gives you everything you need in a very lightweight program. Not the easiest to use, but definitely not the hardest to figure out either. You can use the file Keygen.exe to find a liscence key to use. No, that isn't the most legal way, but unless you want to pay 49.99 for a one year liscence it is the best way. IM

OK, I picked up this really annoying porn popup thing. It pops up on the damn screen unnanounced even when I'm offline. I gotta kill this thing, cause I'm picking up my Kid on Tues. I've run spybot and adaware, but it's still popping up. I'll download and run the Mfst, Zonealarm and Avast above, but do I need a webwasher or what?

I've had luck doing a Google search on the problem. Try searching on the text that is displayed in the popup and put the whole thing in double quotes.
You'll probably find a message board where someone has asked the same exact question before and a working solution follows (rather than trying all different stuff hoping it works).
Sometimes an egghead will tell you how to go into your registry and delete it from there.....it all depends on the issue and your comfort level with diving in deep to fix it.
Give us more info or a screenshot or something.......

Try Stinger from Mcafee, they changed their site recently so not sure if you can still download for free but it knocks out worms & trojans.

You can get Anti Virus Software through either Torrent sites, MIRC or any P2P file sharing program. Through those websites you can get their best packages for free. This is of course pirated software.
If you feel bad about pirating software in general, stop and think a moment about the spyware and virus protection industry. You'll start to ask yourself questions like, "who makes these viruses?", "who gets paid to code them?" and "Who the heck would want to infect other peoples computers, wheres the money in that?"
A lot doctors would be out of a job without the common cold. Fortunately for them, the common cold will always be around, you don't need to artificially generate it..... Viruses and Spyware on the other hand....

Sounds like a messenger problem.
When you say "offline" are you using dialup or broadband? If broadband then technically you are always online. Your webrowser being closed has nothing to do with your computer being offline.
If its a windows messanger problem, there is a quick fix. If its a recent problem, there is also a quick fix. Otherwise, its going to be a pain.
Not to mention, spybot, adaware and Zone Alarm are not programs i would want to put on my computer eating up RAM. Once you've cleaned out your PC, remember to install SP2 and use firefox NOT Internet explorer. From there, you shouldn't have a problem ever again.
The best way to protect your computer from internet attacks is not through a firewall. Its through smart internet surfing.
But if you can, i recommend purchasing a router and setting you computer up to use a Dynamic IP. Basically makes your computer invunerable.
I don't have an anti-virus software on my computer, I don't have anything except Windows Service Pack 2 and Firefox which automatically disable Active control X and block popups. That is enough, my router does the rest.
In 3 years i have never been infected with a single ad or virus. Granted, I don't go to some of the more questionable sites on the web. In anycase, don't click on what look suspicious and you'll never have a problem.

StopZilla was a good product the last time I needed to eliminate a browser hijacker. CWShredder is a free software that is similar. Some programs embed themselves in such a way that when the anti-spyware program eliminates them, it just regenerates itself at bootup. Ewido Anti-Malware was also useful in getting the last part that StopZilla wasn't removing.
If you want to be cheap about it, most programs will let you run the free demo for a limited time and this will clean out your major problem. Then you can uninstall the program before paying to register.
I use AVG anti-virus and ZoneAlarm - both are free for personal use on the basic level and they do a good job preventing crap from coming in to start with. Spybot S&D and AdAware SE are used to scrub out the adware cookies, etc. that gather from normal surfing.
Also, if you don't have many passwords or cookies that you need to use, just clear all cookies and files from your browser periodically. You'll be amazed how much crap you can eliminate that way.

Firfox has vunerabilites also. I have received Cert alerts for Firefox patches as well as Mac browser issues. They are few & far between but as more hackers use those browsers they will develop more hacks for them. Key is smart surfing & not installing or allowing websites to install apps on your PC when you visit a site. Don't allow auto Popups. Even for here! Open that important PM from Mock in a new window if you have to but no POPUPS!

Firefox is more stable than IE and thus the better browser but I didn't mean that its invulnerable.
What will save your computer's life is not the web browser, its your networking setup. The wireless (or wired) router is unbelievable in protecting your computer. If you go to Mcafees website and do a "vulnerability test" with a dynamic ip address it will tell you "we apologize but we couldn't run the test, this should make you feel even more safe because we could not detect your IP"

I use FF, Sygate software firewall (smallish footprint), Symantec corporate antivirus (moderate footprint) and a Linksys router. The only ports open are the ones I opened.
No virusus, spyware or any of that crap for years now.

Then go here (http://tinyurl.com/gnn3w) to learn how to run it and post the log to the Cyber Safety forum (http://www.cybertechhelp.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=25). Someone there will analyze your log and tell you how to fix it.

That's a very good idea ... there is mal-ware and worms written to hide in friendly applications so they can dodge Anti-Spyware software. But in Safe Mode, 90% of applications don't load, so there's nowhere to hide.
I use SpyBot Search & Destroy, though ... three years running. It's free at www.download.com (http://www.download.com), but after a year you really should donate $20.

Windows Defender Beta is good, too .... http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspx
But remember: THESE ARE ONLY ANTI-SPYWARE! You still need an anti-virus program of some kind.
Norton Anti-Virus 2005 SE is FREE from Google: http://pack.google.com/
