View Full Version : Denver and SanFran Trade?

I have heard the rumblings of a possible Lelie trade to SanFran if Lloyd got moved then this morning I picked this up on Footballguys.com in the Shark pool forum:
I have a friend who works inside the SF organization, says there's been an unusual amount of communication today between SF and Denver. Kevan Barlow was also spotted at the facility today with his agent. He said it's very starnge, but has the look of something about to go down
Anyone else hear anything about this?

Kevan Barlow????
I dont want him here in Denver.

This has been rumored for some time now. Lelie and the broncos have spoken out against this saying the reports were false. Of course, they have to say that, so who knows. I want no part of Barlow, though. In my opinion I can't see how denver can trade Lelie. It sounds as if TO will land elsewhere. It will be interesting.

I also dug this little tid bit up:
Player Spotlight: Kevan Barlow
Two springs ago, Mike Shanahan -- who knows a thing or two about running backs -- tabbed Pittsburgh tailback Kevan Barlow as the best back in the 2001 draft. Despite Shanahan’s kind words, Barlow was the 80th player taken, going to the Niners toward the end of round three.
You guys know what happens when Mike has a woody for a certain guy!!!

considering we'd probably want their first round pick, I don't see Barlow even being a factor.

Base salaries, not to mention there's likely a few roster bonuses in there.

woods isn't a bust yet. he's only been in 2 years and he hasn't exactly had steve young tossing him the rock.
Yep, Barlow being seeing around the 49ers complex is more likely a push by the 49ers to restructure his deal, not to trade him.

From my "sources", the answer is yes. Pat will also be streaming the ass kicking over the internet for a fee. It part of the "Plan" to expanded revenue. He trying to do it first before Danny Boy, or Jerry "I don't have a face lift" Jones figure it out.

Shanahan has always been intrigued with underperformers who, in his thinking, have considerable abilities.
While I would be surprised to see the Broncos make a move for Barlow...once again, everything is on the table right now, or so I'm hearing.
The Broncos aren't just looking to upgrade here & add a player there.
Last year Shanahan said the team was a couple of players shy of the talent needed to get to a Super Bowl.
Right now, the general feeling is that the talent IS in place...with a tweak of two...and new additions just give that much more insurance this team can get where they want to go.
Only a few years ago, Mike said they ONLY way to build a consistent winner was through the draft.
It would seem that philosophy has changed...90 degrees.

If the NFL ever starts broadcasting lockerroom throwdowns between teammates, you know I'm getting a season pass.

Either of them would make me very happy.
If I'm a smooth swindler, I find a way to make it happen that we trade for Abraham with our 29th pick, sign David Givens from the Patriots, and then swap our 22nd and Ashley to the 49ers for the #7 overall and decide what we want to do... have absolute beasts mauling the QB and add Mario Williams or give Jake the best TE prospect he has had since Shannon Sharpe with Vernon Davis.

How about both. Woods hasn't shown he worth a trade of Lelie at all. Lelie has lead league in yards per catch, and improved his blocking every year. Lelie shows that he belongs in the NFL. Woods was on the bubble to be cut last year. Woods was great college player but that it.

That would be a dream off-season.
Mario Williams opposite of Courtney. Wow.
That would be a dream and if there was anybody who could pull it off, it would be Shanahan.
Nobody thought we would trade CP and considered us crazy for doing it. We would have to free up a little more wiggle room with the cap to pull it off but man... what an amazing set of pickups this would be.
I imagine we can trade for Abraham and sign him to a back loaded cap friendly number with a large bonus. If not, we can go option B and pick up Andre Carter or even make a play for Darren Howard.
Plan A: we trade for Abe, sign Givens or a quality FA WR would be a must because we would be 1 1st round draft pick down. In that scenario we could parlay the 1st round pick and Ash to the 9ers for the 6 over all pick. Then we take our choice of bringing in Mario Williams or Vernon Davis. Some people think this probably won't make sense... Courtney Brown, John Abraham AND Mario Williams? Well, last year was Courtney Brown's first season playing almost the whole year... I think he made it through 13 or 14 games. Williams of course is a rare talent who can step right in and be effective in the NFL. I'm not argueing with Davis either... that would be a great pick.
PLAN B: We keep our picks, don't trade for Abraham. Parlay Ash and the 22nd to SF for 6th overall selection. Definitely take Williams in that case to pair with CB and Ekuban. Stay at 29 and take the best possible WR and or TE. I'm not a fan of picking up WR's in this draft... I just don't think we develope them very well. Givens would fit us perfect might I add, I would totally be in favor of bringing him in.

The idea was never a straight up trade for the two. The idea was that Ash has value as does the 22nd pick. We could get the 6th pick with some additional consideration. Why not ask for something in return like Woods rather than a 5th or conditional pick next year?
Clockwork Orange
03-12-2006, 12:31 PM
Allright, hang on a sec here.
First of all, Lelie by himself is not enough to move up 16 spots. Lelie & the 22nd pick is not going to get the Broncos the 6th pick. Denver would have to add more to sweeten the deal.
Second, Mario Williams likely won't be there at #6. All signs are pointing towards the Packers taking him at #5. So if he's not going to be there, why would the Broncos trade up?
This scenario doesn't add up. I can't see it happening. Lelie may get traded to the 49ers but I don't think the 6th pick will be involved. If they offered their 2nd rounder I'd take it and be thrilled.

yeah I guess you're right, but then again this team isnt that far away from the super bowl, we don't need 2 firsts and 2 seconds. Actually, there are some pretty good burners in this years draft. While the class is pretty thin overall, Chad Jackson, Santonio Holmes and Sinorice Moss are all deep threats.

the only one I really like is chad jackson, who will be gone by our picks. I don't think Plummer has the vision to get the ball to moss and I don't know much about holmes (I know he used to be rated the number 1 wr in the draft, but now I have no idea)

Santonio Holmes is still the best overall prospect coming into the NFL this year at WR. Jackson tho, is intriguing. Mike Haas, David Anderson, Jackson, Holmes. Productive receivers who could get playing time early enough. I still think the Broncos make a move in the mid rounds for a punt returner, like a Jeremy Bloom.

The only reason Holmes isn't still the #1 rated receiver in the draft is because Chad Jackson ran a 4.38 40 at the combine.

Holmes isn't all that! I witnessed him first hand having trouble getting open against Anwar Phillips of Penn State. He is only the second best receiver on his team. Jackson put up fewer numbers but that was because of Florida's new offensive scheme. Jackson will be a better pro!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I love the trade proposal. Great idea but I dont think we would have to throw in our 2nd rounder. That is a very valuable pick and I would hate to be picking so late in each round. I also think now that Cromartie is healthy he is far and away the best corner available. He wont last past pick 15.
How about:
Denver gets:
6th overall and RB Kevan Barlow
SF gets:
22nd overall, the 29th overall, the 87th overall and WR- Ashley Lelie.
22- BOBBY CARPENTER (OLB) - OHIO STATE
Arguably th ebest 3-4 outside linebacker in the draft.
29- DOMINIQUE BRYD (TE) - USC
One of the best pass recieving TE's available. Senior bowl really boosted his stock.
37- DARRYL TAPP (OLB) - V.Tech
Great coverage for a big guy. He will bring the heat as an OLB in the 3-4.
68- MAURICE DREW (RB) - UCLA
Great back for the WCO
87- GERRIS WILKINSON (MLB) - GEORGIA TECH
Great fit for the inside of our defence.

I agree. As I have said earlier, I dont believe we are efficient with both of them. Trading Gold is the best option (although cap hit issues probably preclude that), the next best option is trading DJ and the worst option is keeping both, given that whatever either of their talent level and overall value is to a ball club is, it is undoubtedly higher than what they are providing for the team right now given our circumstances. When both are on the field, one of them will be out of position and therefore not put in the best situation so that they can help the team. And one will not be on the field about half the time. This is not an efficient arrangement. The argument that having both makes us more "versatile" in the regard that unlike 2004, teams cant scheme their way into a mismatch on Donnie, strains credulity given that both of them will be on the field only half the time anyway.
I agree with your thoughts here, although I would prefer Gold to be the one that is traded. But as between keeping both or trading DJ, I would go with the latter.
labronco
03-12-2006, 04:10 PM
DJ obviously has better trade value than Gold. Plus, Shannahan is in love with Gold, bringing him back after he drafted DJ who I thought played as good as anybody as a rookie.
I don't know if Greenbay, NYJ, or Tennessee would be interested in DJ. The bigger question is if the Broncos will consider trading him.
And Mario will not last till SF pick according to the SF media.
