One day after gaining his surprise freedom from the Minnesota Vikings, cornerback Brian Williams struck gold and agreed to a six-year, $32 million deal with the Jaguars that included a $10 million signing bonus.
Williams was designated a transition player last month by the Vikings even though he was the third cornerback behind Fred Smoot and Antoine Winfield. The transition tag at the time was relatively cheap for a cornerback at $4.774 million.
Those numbers changed when the collective bargaining agreement was extended Wednesday. A calculation change in the transition number happened when the league was mandated to included past franchise and transition numbers in the 2006 numbers.
Williams is considered a physical cornerback with good man-to-man skills and comes to an already talented defense.

That's a lot of $$ but corner was a definite need for the Jags.

$10m signing bonus, reckon the Jags overpaid.

Along with Mathis they are solid at that position. On paper at least.

He was probably a cheaper alternative to Charles Woodson, who they were reported to be interested in.

I was going to say that as well. Woodson will want the world. In other news did anyone see what Law wanted? 10 mill bonus, something around 8 mill a year. Crazy stuff for a guy that age.

weren't they one of the top pass defenses in the league?

That defense is going to be sick. With him and Rashean Mathis together, it will be hard to deal with their secondary.

I think this is about right, besides fans generally disbelief over contracts remember everyone in theory is worth 20+% more than they were this time last year as the rosters are still 53 ppl but the salary cap is 20% higher.

Yes, they were 7th in the league against the pass. But that's mostly due to the fact that they've got the best DT tandem in the NFL.
This signing may also have something to do with the fact that they face Indy twice a year. Either way, they wanted to upgrade their secondary and they've done that.

I dont believe the reason matters. if ur good against the pass ur good against the pass.

He should add about 5 more sacks to Haywards totals next year :yayaya:

Then tell me yavoon, why did they shell out this kind of money for a corner if it wasn't a need?

maybe they wanted to try and become dominant? I dont know, are u implying all moves done by teams are good moves?
I will say though they dont got much talent on offense, maybe they can make it work, who knows.

No, Im not implying anything of the sort. But the Jags obviously felt they needed an upgrade since they were interested in Woodson and eventually spent this much coin on Williams.
Whether it works out for them or not, we'll see. But I don't think it's going to hurt them.
