Redskins | Team working to acquire Lloyd
Fri, 10 Mar 2006 19:23:05 -0800

Jason La Canfora, of the Washington Post, reports the Washington Redskins are working to acquire restricted free agent WR Brandon Lloyd from the San Francisco 49ers, according to several league sources. According to sources, the two sides were working on parameters for a deal, but had yet to agree on compensation.

If the 49ers trade Brandon Lloyd, they're going to be awfully thin at the receiver position. There isn't a whole lot out there in free agency as far as receivers go (I can guarantee you that the 49ers are not interested in Terrell Owens ;)) and the receiver class in this draft is pretty weak. If the 49ers trade Lloyd, might they turn their sights to Ashley Lelie as rumored previously?

Just something to think about.

I'd give up Ashley and #22 for Mario Williams, and I'd never wash the hand that shook on the deal.

Interesting...good eye there, CO.

That would leave them with Arnaz Battle and thats it at WR. That very well may be what is going on.

That's nice, because no one would give up Mario Williams for the 22nd and Ashely.

Maybe they feel Jonnie Morten is finally ready to step up and be a number one WR. ;D

If Ash was to go there........let's just say he would never be heard from again.

That's a great idea, let's trade a solid, proven player from a position we're short at for a guy that plays a position we're pretty well set at and may very well be a bust. We need to be adding to the receiver position, not subtracting.

I agree with Ratboy here, no thanks.

Are you truly saying that we're pretty well set at DE? Devoe, Terrell, Adams, Rod, Watts Vs. Ekuban, George Gause, and John Engelberger. Get real.

Why would Denver give up a first for Abraham to later give up its other first and its #2 WR for another DL. Not only does it sound unlikely, but the cap ramifications on both those players would kill the possibility of any other significant FA (plus it would limit Denver for next yr as well).

True, but a team desperate for a WR in a very thin draft at the position might be willing to trade out of the #6 spot for a nice young WR and a later first rounder.

Yes, the only thing we do lack is a serious pass rushing DE, but if we do get Abraham, that problem is solved most likely.

Devoe, Terrell, Adams, Rod, Watts

Devoe is unproven, he made 1 big catch last year and that's all. Terrell is also unproven here (although I remain confident in him), Rod is getting old and could very well be gone next year or soon after. Watts couldn't even get on the field last year.

Vs. Ekuban, George Gause, and John Engelberger. Get real.

Our DE's may not put up sexy numbers, but they're solid and definetly more proven then our receiving corps.

That would mean they are rating Ashley as the equivalent of a 25-27. Not very likely, but the market often dictates "real" value, not abstract numbers.

I'd like to know, BroncoHaven, what you suggest we do with our receiving corps if we trade Ash and lose Rod to retirement next year.

Are you really saying you're confident with any combination Watts, Terrell, Devoe or Adams, making up our receiving tandem?

Oh, well since we are talking speculation: when we sign TO our WR problem is solved, and Ashley is completely dispendable. Name one DE more proven than Rod. Ekuban? A pass rush has been the Achilles of this team this entire century, but if you enjoy mediocrity, by all means let's stick with it.

I'm fine with Watts, It's those other 3 hacks i'd be worried about.

Courtney just re-upped for 4 years.

Merlin

Would it not be more likely they would go for Abraham and keep their 22nd and Ashley? Not only is it cheaper, but you can strengthen the team further this way. It is unlikely the cap could afford both TO and MW (plus any other FAs and rookies).

I'll take this:
WR 80 Rod Smith 14 Todd Devoe 17 Darius Watts
WR 81 Charlie Adams 13 David Terrell

Over this:
LE 98 Courtney Brown 91 Ebenezer Ekuban
RE 60 John Engelberger

Oh god so what we did last year is mediocrity? For **** sakes. Abe, Mario, TO, Edge, Lewis and Williams. Man this FA period is getting out of control fast and it hasn't started yet. Oh and by no means is TO a long term fix. Hes 33 years old!

Great, so we lost our third leading receiver and now its time to toss out Lelie. Hey Rod we know your starting to slow down so we got a plan to help triple your load next year. Hope you don't mind.

I only included the Abraham speculation because it appeared that he was close to being signed, although that looks to not be true now.

TJ took a lot of flak for his Lelie trade rumors & shouldn't have.

Shanahan's denials aside, Lelie's name DID come up in talks with SF...as well as Miami & Philly...perhaps only as a discussion point, maybe not even in a serious offer, but it DID come up and Lelie got wind of it somehow.

They can deny it all they want.

Shanahan is making moves & NOTHING is OFF the table.

Thanks, I realized long ago realized that Shanahan will listen to all options and no one player is really if off the table if Shanahan thinks a trade, new FA in same position will help the team he will do it. Maybe Lelie will use it to motivate is his butt.
