I was just reading the article in today's RMN about Pat Bowlen and the labor agreement, and I'll tell you what - there isn't a better owner in the NFL than the one we have in Denver. A few things that I love about him:
1) He spends money. When have we ever not gotten a player solely because Pat Bowlen wouldn't open up his checkbook? He's not the wealthiest owner in football, but that has never stopped him from keeping the team competitive.
2) He's obsessed with winning. An important factor in #1.
3) He's not a meddler. He doesn't get overly involved with personnel decisions. He's not constantly creating issues with the press. He does his thing, and lets his football people do theirs. Plus, he's never made knee-jerk reactions to situations. Shanahan has a bad year - no big deal, at least publicly. He sees the big picture and stays the course (two cliches in one sentence!)
4) He gets stuff done. He's a leader among League owners, and he's influential with every major issue the NFL faces.
5) He's savvy enough to have co-existed with some pretty big egos as owner of the Broncos. This might be what I most appreciate about him. Shanahan, God bless him, would just not work with an overbearing owner. Bowlen has given him the space he needs to work efficiently.
Can you think of an NFL owner you'd trade him for?

A excerpt from the article that I think could be Bowlen's mantra:
"Not that he (Bowlen) seems to be worried about it (moving to the middle of the pact of NFL team revenues). With all of the chatter about revenues and labor strife now in the rearview mirror, Bowlen said he's ready to think about what he considers most important.
"We want to win games, we want to win Super Bowls, that's what is important to us," Bowlen said. "People know if they come to our games that they're going to see an exciting game. So we're doing whatever we can. Winning is a lot more important to me than the value of this franchise or making money."

His posts here are hilarious.
He's also drinks himself silly. Did anyone see that interview before the Steelers game when his eyes were closed and he could barely speak. Pretty funny.

A excerpt from the article that I think could be Bowlen's mantra:
The Broncos being out of the top five revenue teams is actually a good thing. The five richest teams give the most to the revenue sharing pot, the next five give a lower percentage and so on. That means if you're the sixth (like us), you are the richest of the the next five, but just shy of having to pay the larger amount of the top tier teams so you get to keep more.

Don't mind Bob. He's just stinging because the only way his teams owner can get anywhere near a Super Bowl is by turning the Chefs into a candy assed dome team.

Thus the pity gesture they're throwing his way. They know that his team will never be a part of a Super Bowl before he dies, so they have to get him involved somehow. I just love that he's being forced to turn the Chefs into a dome team to get it. That's priceless.

The city rejected a new stadium already. I fail to see how this little carrot on a stick is going to motivate them to spend that money now.

Don't get me started - Mike Brown, especially, is a disgrace. At least Ralph Wilson could fall back on senility as his excuse for not voting for the new CBA. Mike Brown's only excuse is being a cheap, selfish, greedy bastard.
Marvin Lewis has done a good job with the Bungals. But mark my words, they will end up in the crapper again soon. It starts at the top, and Mike Brown is just not a smart, competent guy. The proverbial crap will float to the bottom.

Okay, so here's a bit more about Mike Brown. This is from the article in the Cincinnati Enquirer about Brown voting against the new labor agreement:
Even so, Brown said the new agreement brings with it financial pressure.
Brown said low-revenue teams, such as the Bengals, pay 70 percent of their revenue toward player costs. High-revenue teams such as the Washington Redskins and New England Patriots pay about 40 percent.
That's because the Redskins and Patriots of the world generate a great deal more local revenue from advertising, radio agreements and stadium luxury box rentals. Each NFL team will receive $100 million in television contract money.
"We don't want any of the revenues from the high-market clubs," Brown said. "We merely want them to pay the costs that they export down to us under this system."
High-revenue teams force about $45 million to $50 million in costs onto other teams in the league, he said.
The owners attempted to address the revenue disparity by creating an additional pool of shared money. The top 15 revenue-generating clubs will contribute a portion of their local revenues to a pool that will be distributed to the remaining 17 organizations, including the Bengals.
Brown said he does not regret his vote and would have preferred no deal at this time compared to the one that passed.
"I would have wanted to bargain for a new deal," he said.
Someone explain a few things to me. First, what is he talking about when he says, "We don't want any of the revenues from the high-market clubs. We merely want them to pay the costs that they export down to us under this system." Am I missing something? What costs? All I see are revenues that are being diverted to his sorry ass and his sorry excuse for a franchise.
And second, why is Cincinnati in bad shape with "advertising, radio agreements and stadium luxury box rentals" - compared to other teams in the NFL? They have a brand new stadium. They are the 23rd largest metropolitan area in the nation - bigger than Kansas City, Milwaukee (Green Bay) Indianapolis, Charlotte, New Orleans, Nashville, Buffalo, and Jacksonville. That puts them only slightly smaller than Pittsburgh, Tampa, Denver, San Diego, St. Louis, and Cleveland. So why are "advertising and radio agreements" dramatically less than other mid-sized markets?
Perhaps it is because Brown runs his organization like a thrift store. Perhaps it is because of the nepotism rampant through the Bengal organization. Maybe his relatives aren't as adept at negotiating good deals and choosing good players as outsiders might be. Perhaps it is because it is easier to leech off of the efforts of well-run organizations than it is to make the Bengals a successful franchise.
If I was a Bengal fan, I would kill the man. I hate him as it is, and I have no allegiance to the Bengals.

**** Mike Brown. Maybe if he hadn't run the Bengals into the ground for so many years, he'd generate more local revenue.
Stop crying because you want everyone else to help you pay for that fat contract extension you just gave Carson Palmer.

mock is to Bowlen as Madden is to Favre
I don't know if there are many people I would rather be. Fur Coat, Trophy wife, sideline view(or caviar up on high). He's a fine leader in the NFL approaching the pull of Tags.
Thanks for getting a consensus together Pat.
The two biggest mistakes were not bringing in Roaf, altho Lepsis has played well, and especially Berry, who I kept screaming should of been playing more during his entire tenure here. It seems like we are better at pulling bums off the street noone wants than drafting, altho last years and 2002 were good drafts. Berry, Hernon Dayne and Cox come to mind. Droughns as well.
Well...lets get ready to rumble...FA in a few minutes.

Mr. Bowlen is a blessing to us all as the owner of the NFL franchise that we'd like to think of as being ours. I have nothing but respect for the man. He deserves big thanks from us for his role in the way he captains this organization.
He deserves even more thanks for the way he allows the team to operate independently of his own oversight. He's a guy who hires the right people and then lets them do their jobs. That kind of insight is rare and valuable.
He's the man.
