View Full Version : Even though we're at +12.5 million - do you see any restructures?

Pending what we do with Warren, (who even if we re-sign, I'm fairly certain we'll gain some money anyways) and the rest of our free agents, we should have some good ammo to get a top tier guy, along with some others in free agency. Currently, (according to the wonderful guy on this site) we're under at around 12.5 million dollars. With that said, do you believe we still may look to guys like Plummer, Bailey and Smith to re-structure?

Since we might end up being closer to 20 million under if Warren doesnt re-sign I would not be surprised to see some reverse restructuring with the money left over after FA and the Draft. Increase some of Al and Champ's base salaries now in exchange for reducing some future year base salaries so that we dont have to keep backloading and backloading every year to make some room to play with.

if by restructure ur not meaning paycut then I dont see the point. why leverage the future when u have room?

I could see that and that's a great idea. I wouldn't be surprised if some of the guys who already restructured tap Sundquist on the shoulder and say "So the cap is lot higher now, you know..."

why would they do that? all in all restructuring(w/ no paycut) is very helpful for the player. it turns salary into guarenteed money and gives it to the player right away.
I'm not sure if I was bailey that I would do this. Remember if u dont play u dont get paid. all u have to do is be on the team for all those other bonuses.
now if they wanted to give me a roster bonus instead of a signing bonus and do it this year, well then we can talk!

We need to re-sign Putzier and Warren.
Champ and jake could both spread out their money ...

I was going to mention pushing some salary cap forward if this 2% over cap thing goes thru so we are not screwed next year.
I'm offering Bronco Billy an assistant Head Coach position to get him from the Lions...
They know what they are doing, but pushing up the cap right away might not be the best strategy, but it's still just 102 next year, and 107 next so who knows...it's gotten so old...bring on the carp.

I think it really depends on how aggressive the Broncos want to be in free agency/trades.

Exactly. There's no point spending money on Turds simply because you have the money to spend.
1. Draft Well.
2. Sign a difference maker (rather than another Engelberger, or Stephen Alexander etc)
Then see how much money remains. Ofcourse since the cap is now extended we should have enough money to resign Warren which I think is a priority given that we have ZERO depth at DT, the draft isn't heavy on DT prospects as is FA.

Good idea SoCal but I dont think it's really common within the NFL. Cant remember the last time someone had their base salary increased to save money down the road. Plus the 1st time you do that you could end up with every player wanting similar treatment.

Would it be okay to give Dorsett Davis another shot? Seems kinda rare to bring back a cut from a previous pre-season, but he sure looked good ...
And with the new CBA, you gotta figure the Warren thing is basically a done deal ...

You mean like give Willie Middlebust, Terry Pierce, Lenny Walls, and Kevin Kasper another shot? There's a reason why guys like Dorsett, Middlebust etc are out of the league.
I hope we do resign Warren, but he's obviously taking his agents advice and trying to find another suitor (Green Bay), and play them off Denver to start a bidding war since FA/Draft are poor in DTs and how with the CBA signed and extended, there are going to be a lot less DTs available.
The Broncos are in a bind because they don't want to overpay for a player who has a history of getting lazy after a big money deal but they also know that they won't be able to find a replacement unless you're talking about putting in a far less talented player.
Maybe it's time to start thinking about a trade or looking at RFA DL.

The option is there if it's needed. I wouldn't do wholesale restructures for more room, spend what's there and if Shanahan decides he needs some more cap room, restructure a deal or two. Rod would be the last guy I want restructured since he's so close to retirement. Don't push anymore of his money back.

Very good idea! We could take a bite out of that restructured back end monster we have created which has forced to restructure every year. We have almost no dead money this year and our team is basically made. very good idea So Cal. lets hope Sundquist thinks of it.
