Daunte Culpepper's days in Minnesota might be numbered.
The quarterback, due a $6 million roster bonus on March 17, released a statement to ESPN on Wednesday that read:
"Now that I have confirmed that the Vikings have been seeking to trade me, I have asked for permission to speak to the interested teams. The Vikings have denied my request. If a trade does not happen then I am asking the Vikings to terminate my contract as soon as possible. I appreciate that the owner, Mr. Wilf, is willing to pay my March bonus. However, because of the fundamental differences I have with management regarding the approach to my personal and professional life, I think it is the best business decision for both parties to go our separate ways. If the team chooses not to honor my request, then I intend to fulfill my contractual obligations to the Minnesota Vikings."
In a statement to the media in February, Culpepper said that he had offered to move his roster bonus to another date to help the Vikings sign more free agents under the salary cap -- though the team is projected to have plenty of room.
"If I am not traded, I want to help coach Childress make a serious run for the championship this year," Culpepper said.
However, both the Star Tribune and Pioneer Press reported that Vikings owner Zygi Wilf told reporters at the NFL scouting combine that the team planned to pay Culpepper the bonus.
When he was asked if Culpepper figures in the team's 2006 plans, Wilf said "That is our plan, yes. Always was."
Downplaying the trade speculation, coach Brad Childress asserted that he plans to have both Culpepper and Brad Johnson on the team this year at quarterback.
"That's the mindset," Childress said at the combine. "I don't know anything to the contrary."
The injured quarterback, who tore three ligaments in his right knee in an Oct. 30 game and has been rehabilitating in his native Florida, said last month that he told Wilf he wasn't happy with what he's been reading in the news -- and what he hasn't been hearing from the club.
"I shared my disappointment with the lack of communication and the false reports about me demanding more money coming out of Minnesota," said Culpepper, who let go of his agent in January and has been representing himself.
Childress acknowledged that the team has had inquiries about Culpepper.
"That's what goes on this time of year," he said.
But the coach diverted his comments toward Culpepper's knee. He's projected to return for training camp, but that's not a guarantee.
"He's three months out of a major surgery," Childress said. "Before we do anything, we're going to get him back to health.
"All my talk with the trainers is about getting him back to the level of play he was at in 2004," he said.
That's when Culpepper was chosen for his third Pro Bowl after setting several franchise records and establishing an NFL mark for most combined rushing and passing yardage. But playing without receiver Randy Moss, center Matt Birk and offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Scott Linehan, Culpepper started last season poorly and then suffered the devastating injury.
"All of the discussion about me being traded or cut has helped me realize that the contract I have ran out of guarantees the day I was injured," he said. "Therefore each year they pay you to play is a gift. I expect that if there are no changes to my present contract, then I should prepare for a year-by-year commitment. When I am ready to hit the field this year, wherever it may be, I plan on being better than ever and enjoying the ride."

Actully, the funny thing is this guy is too dumb to read defenses and now has fired his agent and representing himself. He communicates with the media and team via email.

Slap isn't being harsh (well maybe a little bit about his weight). They guy has some record for consecutive games with a fumble and he also has the highest fumble-to-snap ratio in the NFL. He happens to lose a lot of those to the defense as well. It's not like he's a young quarterback and I doubt that the coaches haven't talked to him about it before. And don't try and say it's because he's a "scramblin'" Quarterback. I think Plummer fumbled twice last years. McNabb never had a problem with fumbles. They guy has some kind of serious problem with holding onto the ball.

He's got small hands. That's been one of the major knocks on him since he came into the league.

Two years ago he did complete 69% of his passes, and threw for 33 TDs with only 11 ints. I think he can read a defense.

Plummer did fumble twice last year, in the AFC Championship game. Also had 2 picks.

I'll pass on Culpepper. But I like the fact that he said he doesn't like his situation, but he's willing to come back and perform his contractual obligations.
Sounds like he means it. Nice to hear one of these millionaires are going to play out their contract and not hold out/ stay home and pout.

I don't get all the hate towards Culpepper. Yeah, he sucked through seven games last year. But look at the two years before that. He completed 67% of his passes. Threw for over 8000 yards, 64 TDs and only 22 ints. He had a 96 rating in '03, and a 110 rating in '04.
He's a damn good QB. Before last year I had him in the top 5 in the league. So did many others.
If Plummer was on his way out the door, I'd be all for Culpepper replacing him. Plummer did save his job last year by playing well all season. So I'm not about to make an argument that Shanny should replace him with Culpepper (I would have made that argument last offseason if Culpepper was available). But I'd say Culpepper is a better QB. It's not really close.

MINNEAPOLIS -- Daunte Culpepper (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?statsId=4659)'s shaky relationship with the Minnesota Vikings (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/clubhouse?team=min) deteriorated further on Wednesday when the quarterback said he has asked to be released if the team can't work out a trade.
<TABLE cellSpacing=0 align=right border=0><TBODY><TR><TD width=2></TD><TD width=65>http://espn.starwave.com/i/nfl/profiles/players/statsid/s4659.jpg</TD></TR><TR><TD width=2></TD><TD width=65>Culpepper</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE>
"Two days ago I got an e-mail from management that confirmed for me that they did not see me as the player or person that I see myself," Culpepper told ESPN's Andrea Kremer. "I was shocked. It pushed me to this point [seeking a trade]. The e-mail made no mention of trying to trade me, but I confirmed from an outside source that they were attempting to trade me. While I have not yet told the Vikings, if they do not trade me, I intend to ask the Vikings to terminate my contract."
In an e-mail to reporters, Culpepper asked the Vikings if he could speak to interested teams on his own behalf -- and was denied.
Culpepper said he appreciated that the team's new owner, Zygi Wilf, was willing to pay him a $6 million bonus due later this month.
"However, because of the fundamental differences I have with management regarding the approach to my personal and professional life, I think it is the best business decision for both parties to go our separate ways," Culpepper said.
He softened his message slightly by saying that if the team didn't honor his request, "then I intend to fulfill my contractual obligations to the Minnesota Vikings."
In a brief phone interview with The Associated Press, Culpepper said he had been angered by a recent e-mail he received from the team. He didn't elaborate on the contents of the e-mail.
A Vikings spokesman said the team would not comment on the e-mail.
Culpepper's status with the team has been in question ever since a boat party scandal on Lake Minnetonka in September. He was charged with several misdemeanors for lewd conduct; Culpepper has said he is innocent and will fight the allegations in court.
Further complicating Culpepper's situation is his continued recovery from a devastating knee injury on Oct. 30 against Carolina. Culpepper missed most of last season after tearing three ligaments in his right knee, calling into question whether he will be ready for the start of the 2006 season.
Even before the injury, Culpepper was having one of his worst seasons as a pro.
He threw twice as many interceptions as he did touchdowns during the Vikings' 2-5 start. After he went down with the injury, backup Brad Johnson (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?statsId=2160) guided the Vikings to six straight wins, though that was due as much to an improved defense as it was Johnson's play.
Culpepper let his longtime agent, Mason Ashe, go in the offseason. He has been representing himself since then, saying he wanted to be more involved in his financial business, and has issued several statements to the media conveying his general unhappiness with the organization.
Culpepper signed a 10-year, $102 million contract in 2003, but much of that money was not guaranteed. He restructured his contract during training camp last season to give him nearly $8 million more in guaranteed money, but the quarterback has not been a steady presence with the team during its coaching change.
Wilf fired Mike Tice after the last game of the season and replaced him with Philadelphia offensive coordinator Brad Childress.
During his introductory press conference, Childress proclaimed Culpepper the starter, though he acknowledged at the NFL combine that the team had received inquiries about his availability.
Childress said then that he hoped to have both Culpepper and Johnson on the team this season.
"That's the mindset," Childress said at the combine in Indianapolis. "I don't know anything to the contrary."

Well, that's why I took that model citizen Marcus Vick in my mock draft. When I saw that play where he made spagetti out of his knee ligaments, I said..."That knee just got shredded...ACL"...It was worse. This is a Robert Edwards type injury that will never fully go away.
As many of you know, my NFC team is the HornHeads, and altho I haven't been back in NW Iowa for more than a few years...his fumbles are just absurd. He can (could) run but would stand there and has very poor pocket presence and get hammed...he doesn't feel the heat and move well till he simply takes off (or did).
I don't think Brad Johnson is exactly the QBOTF...Ha! But he has better pocket presence. Williamson was a serious reach at WR. Maybe he will wake up after his rookie campaign. mock isn't optimistic about next year at all, I wouldn't release him tho. If they are going to pay him 6 million plus his salary, WTF is he whining about while he sits out next year?
Nice coat, looks like he borrowed some bling from CP with the earrings and Fox coat. I think it's fox. Fox is one of mock's friends (good mousers and can take on a rat) but they have virtually no cover anymore as fencerows are all gone due to blizzards and no cattle anymore. They have lost alot of habitat but they are still around...they prefer phesant to rat... It's like T.O., you just hope for the best. I wouldn't give him away, but if he's going to be released, why pay the roster bonus?
He messed that knee up good and I could tell it immediately.
