As long as we're there, the religious fanatics will try and kill us and each other. Staying there will do nothing to stop it.

Majority of Americans think Iraq headed for civil war
WASHINGTON (AFP) - Most Americans believe the sectarian violence in Iraq is building up to a civil war, and more than half think US troops should begin to withdraw from that country, according to a recent poll.

President George W. Bush's handling of Iraq met with a 59 percent disapproval rating, and 65 percent do not believe his administration has a clear plan for the troubled country, the Washington Post-ABC poll found.

A full 80 percent of the 1,000 people who took the survey between March 2 and 5 thought the recent upsurge in violence in Iraq made a civil war likely, and 52 percent said the United States should begin withdrawing its troops from Iraq.

Fifty-seven percent said the war in Iraq was not worth fighting against 42 percent who said it did; a two percent swing up and down respectively since the last survey was taken in late January.

Bush's overall approval rating dropped one point to 41 percent from late January, while his disapproval rating went up two to 58 percent.

On issues, Bush had negative approval ratings for his handling of Iraq, ethics in government, health care, prescription drug benefits for the elderly, the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, the US economy and international affairs.

Only in dealing with terrorism did Bush fare better, getting a 52 percent approval rating and a 46 percent disapproval rating in the survey that had a margin of error of plus or minus three points.

I think this thread hit the nail on the head

Hope in Baghdad (at a funeral no less)
enjolras

Iran's interests are in seeing a weak and/or partitioned Iraq. And al queda's interests are furthered by the sunni shooting a the shiia. It may be irrelevant that a maj of both sunni and shiia just want to live in peace. So long as a sizeable minority keep butchering each other, the maj may have no choice.

80% Of Americans Think Iraq Headed For Civil War

The other 20% either have no access to TV or newspapers, or get their "news" from Rush Limbaugh, Fox, and/or newsmax.com.

If the iranians/bin laden are successful at triggering one maybe, (and yes the iranians)just ask yourself who benifets from a civil war?

how the heck does bush get out of this?

Bush, Cheney, Halliburton, Carlyle, and all of BushCo's defense industry cronies make a killing off of war - any war. (In terms of both dollars and cents and, potentially, "political capital.")

BushCo steers lucrative contacts to its defense contractor cronies, and its cronies keep the BushCo/GOP war chest topped off.

It's quid pro quo.

man your agenda is obvious.

And what "agenda" is that?

Protesting the idea of a crime family running the U.S. government?

Guilty as charged.

"The only people who want us in Iraq is Iran and al-Qaeda. I talked to a top-level commander and he said China wants us there also. Why? Because we’re depleting our resources - our troop resources and our fiscal resources...The war on terrorism is worldwide. In Iraq, it’s a civil war. We have diverted ourselves away from that war on terrorism."

Yes, that's exactly what has happened to every commander who has dared to question the boy king's edicts hitherto.

It's not a mater of questioning it, it's a matter of running your piehole to people that don't need that info in the first place, it puts our boys at risk zero info about our success or failures needs to needs to be babbled about by senators. (even if it's true or not) the senator/commanders should have their a**es kicked too if you ask me.

???

So the general who, at the outset of the invasion, told Bush we needed more boots on the ground (and got canned for his trouble) was "puting our boys at risk?"

That's some convoluted logic.
