View Full Version : KC to host a Super Bowl! (Merged with Crazytard's dumb thread)
National Football League Commissioner Paul Tagliabue is scheduled to announce on Sunday the date Kansas City will host a Super Bowl should Arrowhead Stadium get a roof. Tagliabue is expected to make the announcement at 2 p.m. Sunday. Steve Glorioso, a spokesman for Kansas City Mayor Kay Barnes, said Friday that Tagliabue might be at Arrowhead to make the announcement. If not, he'll reveal the date via video connection. NFL owners decided Nov. 17 to give Arrowhead Stadium a Super Bowl game between 2012 and 2021 if the stadium has a climate-controlled enclosure by 2010. More recently, that range had been narrowed to either 2015 or 2017.

Been there in Oct. It blew chunks.
A Super Bowl needs activities. Music, shows, atmosphere and decent weather.
The NFL will bring in it's caravan on NFL experience crap, but the city needs to show off it's own talents and it's local. It's nice when a Super Bowl is in a city with a NBA and or NHL franchise to had to the weekend.
THen theres shopping, food and other attractions. Not to mention hotel rooms and the ability to handle the influx of people.

I am of the thinking a Superbowl should be held at least once in every NFL city. Football is a game played outdoors, best games are the ones where the weather is not perfect. I suppose tho, that if Pdiddy gets cold, they cant hold it outside.

I second that. The most intersting thig to do in KC is the Oregon Trail Museam, and that was kinda boring.
Overland Park is kinda nice, but not only is most of KC a ****hole, but there really isnt anything to do. I knew a church group from KC once who mad their summer camping trips to Bailey, CO because they said Colorado was much better for the outdoors AND there was a lot more to do. When I asked them where they were from, they said "Misery"
Ironically two of them were Chiefs fans... one a Broncos fan, I guess the rest didnt really watch football.

Denver has a rediculous amout of things to do.
Most of them involving sports as I have come to realize that no other American city (and believe me, I've been to many) is as big on sports than Denver. Maybe Boston or Dallas. New York has a strong fan base too, but its probabally because they a huge.
Great Restaraunts..... 16th Street.... biggest Art museam west of the Mississippi (of course this doesent matter to Chief fans).... Elitch gardens... national parks.... the worlds nicest Ski Resorts.
Yes, I had an amazing time growing up in Denver. Littleton is the most beautiful city in the US. I rank it up there with Stockholm, Vancouver, and Helsinki in terms of niceness. And its great for things to do considering its size. Denver is a cultured city that rivals any other city in the US with simlar populations, and rivals many of the bigger cities too.
Lets not forget that Denver, including the metro area is ranked #8 in size of US cities.
I miss it.
Still dont want to have a Super Bowl here.

Why did they play night games in January?
"The networks like weather, so the NFL likes it, too -- in the last few seasons, it has scheduled night games in places like Foxborough and Green Bay, hoping to get a little ice and snow into the picture or at least shots of players breathing cold air. Who can forget the "tuck rule" game four years ago that started the Patriots on their run of three titles in four years -- mythology has it being played in a blizzard, although for New Englanders, it was just a run-of-the-mill snowstorm.
Chicago has had some classic weather games, two in particular.
One was the "Fog Bowl, " a 20-12 win by the Bears over Philadelphia in 1988 at just this stage of the playoffs -- "the best game I've never seen," one fan called it. The fog rolled in off Lake Michigan just before halftime. The only way to see the second half was on monitors after television cameras were stationed on the sideline.
And even from there, the game was almost unwatchable.
"I could hardly see across the field, and I'm sure they couldn't, either," Eagles coach Buddy Ryan said. "They'd run a play, and I didn't know who had the ball or what was going on."
That was a fairly warm day in Chicago.
It wasn't warm on Jan. 5, 1986, when the New York Giants played a second-round game against another Chicago team with a dominant defense -- that one went on to win the Super Bowl in dominant fashion. The wind at Soldier Field howled so wildly that day that it blew the ball away from Giants punter Sean Landeta's foot and he whiffed, looking on in bewilderment as Chicago's Shaun Gayle picked it up and returned it for a touchdown.
There are others, even going back to the "Sneaker Game" at New York's Polo Grounds in 1934 when the late Wellington Mara, then 18, was dispatched at halftime for sneakers to overcome icy conditions. The players donned them, overcame a 10-3 deficit and beat the Bears 30-13 for the NFL title.
There was, of course, the "Ice Bowl" in Green Bay, won by the Packers over the Cowboys 21-17 for the 1967 NFL championship in minus-13 temperatures and minus-48 wind chill.
And, more recently, the 1981 AFC title game, played in a wind chill of 59 below in Cincinnati on Jan. 9, 1982. Warm-weather San Diego never had a chance: the Cincinnati offensive linemen came out with no covering on their arms to intimidate the Chargers, Dan Fouts' passes fell like lumps of coal and the Bengals beat them 27-7 to go on to the Super Bowl.
That Super Bowl was in Detroit that year, just as it is this year, and Cincinnati lost to the 49ers -- the game was indoors, not out.
That's the weather factor.
There's unlikely to be much this week and that's a shame."

The only thing Denver has over the rest of the midwest(yes Denver is still considered flyover country) is more skiing options. I had to go to work. Don't get me wrong its fun to watch people post about things they know nothing about like yourself or even go Smurf style and talk about things that are not even there.
I think KC is a fun town...has different things there that make it unique. I like to travel...I think there are a lot of great cities in this country each one having its own things that it brings to the table.
Things I would point out when someone comes to KC?
First off I would say the Country Club Plaza.
http://www.countryclubplaza.com/
Tons of great dining and shopping. It has a very cool esthetic modeled after Seville, Spain. All the cool different things this area brings to the table is special. Go to Capital Grille for the best steak of your life.
The Nelson Atkins Museum always has great collections. I was lucky enough to catch a great photograpghy exhibit the last time I was visiting folks in KC.
http://www.nelson-atkins.org/
The American Jazz Museum. Must see for anyone who enjoys music. http://www.americanjazzmuseum.com/
Negro Leagues Museum. Preserves the rich history of the african american baseball league. http://www.nlbm.com/
Union Station has a great science museum inside of it aside from just being a great building to check out by itself. http://www.unionstation.org/
Downtown is looking better all the time with a ton of work being done. The Sprint Center will be done in time and there is a lot of nifhtlife to be had in the area. Aside from that KC is one the best places to catch a football game there is wether you are a Chiefs fan or not. I believe anyone who loves the game of football should see a game at Arrowhead. The Royals suck beyond words but it is a good place to see a game of baseball...if they happen to win thats just extra. ;D
Anyway, some people have made up their minds and thats ok. Kansas City has some fun things and is worth visiting. I just think it is funny to here opinions from people that have not been there or someone on this board but went and formed his opinion from driving through and eating at a pizza buffet.
I don't think there is a big city in a country this big that isn't worth visiting but hey thats just me...

I see your point Zach.
Im betting KC has some stuff to do. Arrowhead is a classic stadium, and putting a roof on it is a mistake. I hope Denver NEVER does that. It cheapens the game.
Anyway, heres my take on SB locations:
I want at least 1 SB in Denver. But:
People who go to the games spend thousands upon thousands of dollars. They go for the game, but mainly to have a good time and use it as a vacation as well.
Hot spots for that are Florida, AZ, CA, and TX. I think the fans that spend all this money would rather go to places like those over KC and even Denver.

I am taking a wait and see approach....it isn't a roof in a classic sense. I will find a link to an animation of the rolling roof that will be able to go over Arrowhead and the K which are right next to eachother. I am not crazy about it but we will see how it is implemented. It seems you are still going to feel like you are outside but I could be wrong.
As far as your second point I agree thats what lot of people want but there are times when it just doesnt seem right seeing these amazing AFC or NFC conference championships played in places like GB, DEN, NE...the elements are part of it and its just great football...then you see this game in AZ and it just doesn't feel right.

I really hope that if KC gets the SB, owners like Bowlen and Kraft will have an easier time to get the SB to our cities. But a lot of the time, the SB isnt filled with "real" fans.
It's not worth visiting and downtown is a joke.

Ive been there. It wasn't the greatest place Ive been too. The car that was on fire outside the city on the interstate was pretty cool. Does KC have Worlds of fun or Oceans of fun? I went there, that park with the Timberwolf, whatever that place was called. Still I don't know if thats a place I would like to go in Jan/Feb.
Not open in winter.

She said herself she hadn't been there...she doesn't know what she is talking about.
Aside from that there is a lot of support this time around for the stadium deal. The last one didn't go and im glad it didn't. There were so many shady things tagged along to it...
If you think there is only going to the zoo and BBQ there. Then more power to you bud. Sucks for you to live in a place you dont like and are not interested in liking. Life seems to short for that.
How many football fans are museum or art gallery types ? Not many, country club plaza = real snooty types.
What support, the hell there is. Read the paper or listen to talk radio. Be glad to get your stadium updated, no way you will get a roof.

No. I haven't been there...but like it's been said. Why would I want to spend tons of money and go to SB in a town that basically has the same climate I have in February. I'm not spending my hard earned dollars to take a vacation in KC...If I'm going anywhere I'll go to St. Louis but only if the Broncos are there and it's not winter! Give me somewhere warm anytime. Besides...I'm not that into museums!...since that's about all you listed.
As for places to eat...you can find good places in most cities...and as for a zoo, the one in Boise, Idaho is pretty good...and we might go to the Diego Zoo next time around...but a zoo is pretty much a zoo. I can find museums, a zoo, sports and shopping in my own hometown.

Have you seen the crowd that goes to Superbowls?
So KC can take **** for being white trash but you are also going to talk down for something because some upper class types are often there?

A Super Bowl needs activities. Music, shows, atmosphere and decent weather.
The NFL will bring in it's caravan on NFL experience crap, but the city needs to show off it's own talents and it's local. It's nice when a Super Bowl is in a city with a NBA and or NHL franchise to had to the weekend.
THen theres shopping, food and other attractions. Not to mention hotel rooms and the ability to handle the influx of people.
I'm sure that the pre-game week will have at least one Monster Truck rally. :mullet1:

Every time I've gone to Kansas City in the summer to watch baseball (before the Rockies were born in 1993) I've had a good time. Royals stadium is a nice, small ballpark. I had great BBQ ribs at some place downtown that I can't remember right now.
Denver would be a slam dunk Super Bowl city if we had a roof over Invesco. Concurent activities at Breckenridge, Vail, Copper Mountain, Winter Park, etc. would be easy and attractive to visiting suits. Avalanche and Nuggets games would probably be scheduled for Friday and Saturday of that week. The weather has been real nice in Denver the last two Super Bowl weekends.
That said, I'd rather not have a roof over our stadium and not have a Super Bowl than vice versa.

"Lets not forget that Denver, including the metro area is ranked #8 in size of US cities"
Ummmm no. Not even close.
http://www.census.gov/population/cen2000/phc-t29/tab03a.pdf
Denver is the 22nd largest metro in the US. Sorry if that hurts your feelings. Denver is not NEARLY as big or as important as many of you would like to belive. The only thing Denver has over the rest of the midwest(yes Denver is still considered flyover country) is more skiing options. And who cares unless you are either a pot head or some revolting suburbanized soft white boy? Get some reality folks. People in Philadelphia, DC, Chicago and people from other real cities are laughing at you.
Wow you're kinda dumb. It's okay, I respect your right to live.
The fact of the matter is that Denver is not a big city. Thats why I said metro area. They dont count the metro area in a census. The majority of Denvers population is in the outerlying cities, IE Lakewood, Aroura, Littleton, Englewood, Golden, Evergreen, Westmenister, Commerce ETC.
I didn't look at that sheet, although its probabally pretty accurate. I do know that DENVER's population is only about 500,000
But compair that to that of, say San Antonio, which has a population of 2 million.... or here in Jacksonville 800,000. The city limits are huge. Any city can have 2 million people if the city streches on for a hundred miles. And the fact is that these cities dont have surrounding cities, because the city limits include all developed areas. Denver is bigger than both San Antonio AND Jacksonville by quite a bit.
Including the metro areas San Antonio lies at about 2.1 million.... Jacksonville 900,000.... Denver at about 2.8 million.
Thats how it works.
Denver is the home of such great stars as:
Matt Stone and Trey Parker (writers/directors of South Park)
Jessica Biel (from Stealth, Blade 3, 7th Heaven) is from Boulder
Don Cheadle (Academy Award winner from Crash, Hotel Rawanda, and Oceans 11)
David Fincher (Director of Fight Club and Se7en)
Wellington Webb (Former Mayor and runner up for Chairman of the Democratic National Party)
Condoleezza Rice (we got both Dems and Reps)
Neil Cassidy
Reese Roper
And some awesome bands -
Five Iron Frenzy
The Fray
The String Cheese Incident
Big Head Todd and the Monsters

Speaking of, I think that the Denver Art museam has a great section on 16th Century Dutch Rennisance painters.... they even have a Heiyronmous Bosh origional.
Its the largest art gallery west of the Mississippi. I think they focus too much on recent western art though. Too much stuff fomr early 1900's Colorado... not enough older stuff from the Rennisance, Surrealist era, or the Industrial Revolution of France and England.
I acutally had a chance to see an Origional Di Vinci at the Hermitage in St. Petersburg Russia. It was beautiful.

Overland Park is nice, that's about it. It's downtown is rotting, but if you want crap...check out St. Louis. The obsolete freeway is confusing and dangerous....and it literally smells...kinda like a mix of beer and piss...or something...might of been the river...
Why they would spend all that money on a 30 year old stadium is odd. Yes, it was ahead of it's time, but it's still 30 years old. I imagine it will just be a temporary fabric roof because a permenant one would put too much outer stress on the structure without trusses.

And Sassy, since you're so much smarter than us, tell us what there is to do in Denver that you cant do in Fargo, ND sans Skiing and going to a Nuggets game. Because frankly there doesnt seem like theres much to be brag about. Especially if its filled with idiots like you.
What does that have to do with it...there are a lot of things I can do in Denver that I can't do in Fargo...such as see a Bronco game, visit the Denver mint, Hang out with friends on OF1, hang out at the 16th St. mall, Go to a Rockies game, go to an Avalanche game, go to a Crush game, hike in the mountains, ride a horse/buggy downtown Denver...visit the capital, etc. Not sure what you're getting at....doesn't seem like much to do in Fargo or in Denver???
As for Fargo, we have a minor league baseball team...The Redhawks that are usually really good, jazz concerts, plays, farmers market, nice parks, fishing in the Red River, skiing, local sports, museums, a zoo, shopping, movies, street fairs, etc.
There are things going on here.
My guess from your first post was that you aren't a Bronco fan anyway, so why do you care?
...and why am I an idiot. I'm just saying there is as much to do in Fargo as there is in KC. I was disagreeing with Zach...not really arguing with you...Just wasn't impressed that your first post had to do with the population of Denver...that's all...and the fact that you came off arguing right off the bat.

Exciting!
"Hang out with friends on OF1"
there aren't social places to hang out in Fargo?
"hang out at the 16th St. mall"
ZOMG you have teh Mall, you pwn all other cities!
"go to a rockies game go to an Avalanche game, go to a Crush game"
Rockies, wouldnt be in season during superbowl weekend, Avalanche....Anyone know the percentage of football fans that care about hockey? Crush...Who are they? You're joking right?
"hike in the mountains"
you get one point
"ride a horse/buggy downtown Denver..."
Many, many cities offer horse and buggy rides. And If this is how you would spend your time/money I feel sorry for you.
"visit the capital"

There are more things to do in Denver...I wasn't putting KC down...just telling the truth.

If you adjust for the population difference, while Denver has a greater number of Trailer parks, Kansas City has a greater number per capita. If Kansas City and Denver had the same populations, KC would have more trailer parks and they would take up more land.

Maybe we have differing perceptions of what a winning season is. Missing the playoffs entirely isn't a winning season....one and done isn't a winning season...in case you didn't notice...noone was happy with our one and done seasons in 2003-2004....but you call missing the playoffs a winning season. Unreal.
When Denver went 11-5 years ago and Cleveland won the division 8-8 we were pissed, but those were the cards. You need a reality check....to miss the playoffs and call it a winning season is idiotic.
Going 13-3 and dumping your first playoff game is a winning season too right Bob...but going deep into the playoffs is a rather odd concept isn't it Bob. Denver has milder weather than KC at that time, better downtown very near, and could certainly support a tarp for the game.
Why do we have to coddle these rich bitches...if you can play the game outdoors in the AFC championship, you can play it for the SB. Denver's weather can vary, but the AFC game was played at near 40 even tho it was played late. Did they give Vinatari a roof when he kicked the winner in the snow?

Best possible scenario for a KC Super Bowl.
KC wins the AFC west with us coming in as a wild card (perhaps due to a few early season temporary injuries)
We win the wild card game and the first playoff game and wind up destroying KC at Arrowhead 42-7 in the AFC Championship game in which they are favored.
Two weeks later we slaughter the NFC champs 48-0 at Arrowhead in front of 30,000 KC fans still on suicide watch from two weeks earlier!
Now that would be SWEET!! :-)

I'd welcome the SB to KC, just so there is something different. I would like to see every venue get a chance to host the SB (except for Joakland). Weather is part of the game and should be at the SB too.

So what? The window has closed and that's what I said. Every year the NFL sends Denver to KC in December. I never said KC was a BAD team, but I expect them to slip even more next year.
Peterson has said that they won't spend in FA, they are well over the cap right now, their best two coaches have bolted and they aren't getting any younger. Time for you to take a reality check.

These things tend to be cyclical with every team. Not many clubs go out and spend huge money in free agency every offseason.
They will try. I'm expecting a good draft (Bunkley please) and one or two free agent pickups.
I'm of the opinion that we don't need much, anyway. I just wish we had dumped Gunther...

Dont forget, we will draft players if we do nothing else. I can appreciate your attempts at riling ol' bob up. But the facts are that spending big money now would put us in poorer cap shape next season than we are this season. Surely you can appreciate the condition of your own cap this off season.
I expect we will see some participation in free agency this year. But probably not to the degree we did last season. However, the draft will provide change in it's own right.
The Denver Broncos are a prime example of why you dont just spend money for the sake of spending money in free agency. Though the Bronco faithfull may feel like last seasons signing of the Browncos was an upgrade, there is a strong arguement that they went backwards on that defensive line last season.

Denver is allready under the cap even before Warren's deal voids, yet alone a new CBA.
Lepsis, Nalen and Brown have allready redone. Putz is the only real loss IMO...Pryce wasn't dominant for the 8.5 we saved. MA is an aging RB who might or might not be brought back, but I think we will get fresh legs with multiple picks out there.
When Warren's deal voids we will be 17 under the cap if the CBA is approved. Your currently 19 over.

You're incorrect. We're not 19 over. We, as you, have made cuts and restructured deals. Understand however, oh shorsighted one, that with restructures comes a price further down the road that will have to be paid.

We cut line, you restructured.
Let me repeat this since you didn't seem to grasp it. WE CUT LINE. With only 3 players and have tons of picks in the draft. We have literally no dead money except for a little on Pryce. Our team is one of the youngest in the NFL, and will be even younger next year. 5 players are aging but still performing well, Lynch, Lepsis, Nalen and Rod Smith. The rest of the team is quite young. The point is that KC is a very aging team that missed it's chance, period.

I think the point that many seem to struggle with when talking to Chiefs fans, is that we just aren't that impressed with the Broncos. That happens when you lose to the Chiefs
You make fun of our defense, but we beat you.
You make fun of our age, but we beat you.
You talk of how you made the playoffs, but we beat you.
Do you see the trend?
Now, I dont contend that beating the Broncos is the only thing of importance for the Chiefs to accomplish. Indeed, I would love to have made the playoffs last season.
But when you sit around thumping your chest, or making fun of the age of another team, it carries more weight when you actually have the ability to beat said team. In the case of the Kansas City Chiefs, this simply does not apply.
Now, if this was the beginning of the season and we were playing you at your place, I would be more appreciative of your point.
However, last I saw, Larry Johnson ran for 140 and Green threw for 200 before halftime. Thumping your chest about your defense and calling the offense old just makes you look well.....like Donko fans.

I guess that is one way to get KC mentioned with the word superbowl again. I'm just grateful Denver already has a new stadium and our team won't be playing in some pussy ass dome.

Q: The concept was a Rolling Roof between the two stadiums. Is there any discussion about making Arrowhead an all-weather facility and not doing the same to Kauffman?
PETERSON: “There was a discussion but Lamar’s vision and the original architect’s plan is very sound in that, in the great days that we love to play football in Arrowhead in September, October and even November, that this roof be completely off of the stadium, be completely open air, with no shadows on the field, and allow us to continue to let the grass grow. That’s why this Rolling Roof concept is quite unique to the National Football League.”
