.... that the posters on this forum would make an effort to try to keep things civil. I realize that many of us here are very passionate about our political viewpoints and that more than just a few threads of late have involved hot-button topics that have a strong tendency to get out of hand.

However... those who hold a different political opinion are not the enemy (enemy: n. Raider or Chef fan ;D)... and going postal on them isn't going to really solve any differences of opinion or change anyone's mind.... plus, it could be detrimental to the OrangeMane forum.

Give us mods a break, willya? ;D :P ;D

Blue... Completely agree that some of the dialogue around here goes over the top. Both sides of the fence need to keep it in check...

On the other hand i would soooooo love to know who is constantly bitching to the mods and just what their complaints are???

as for both chevy and ford owners... be happy you aren't driving a dodge!!!

Why are these people allowed to hide behind the Internet discussion forum equivalent of the rape shield law?

If someone is complaining about you to the mods, then you should have the right to know the identity of the accuser so you can answer their charges.

To clarify, this thread wasn't posted in response to a specific complaint; it was just that we'd had a few very heated discussions of late and some of those threads were looking like they had the potential to get out of hand.

At any rate, a hostile exchange of insults probably isn't a terribly effective means of coaxing those who may hold a diametrically-opposed viewpoint into considering the merits of one's argument... and even though this forum is often referred to as the War Room, it might not be in the Mane's best interests for it to turn into a war zone...

With all due respect, I'd like to suggest that none of the regulars here are in the business of merely coaxing anyone who is diametrically opposed to our viewpoints. Diametric opposition requires more than coaxing. Diametric opposition responds to nothing less than scorched earth posting. Scorched earth is the nature of politics in the U.S. today. There are issues at hand right now that are as important as any we have ever faced in our history. Passions run deep now, and passion should be accepted behavior on a political forum.

I see more bitter posting about football rivalries on these pages. I never see serious controvery over that kind of discord here. I certainly never remember a mod having to ask us to stop attacking the Chiefs fans.

Perhaps the OM could establish a political forum wherein we could all just agree to get along, but I doubt there'd be much interest.

As for the mushy middle, if they are offended by our volleys, I'd suggest that there are any number of popular magazines that might not offend them as we do.

If the complaints to the mods are coming from partisans, just ban their whining butts if you really need a permanent solution.

I'm not trying to get in your face on this, Blue. I'm just trying to get you to ignore us. We're just not worth the brain damage.

Fair enough... and I do agree that a thick skin is one's best friend on this forum. However, there are limits to what's acceptable even here and mod intervention could become necessary in the event that any given discourse reaches a certain level of rancor... "scorched earth" is not something I'd personally consider a viable option and I rather suspect the other mods would hold a similar view. Maintaining a modicum of civility means we won't have to make decisions/take actions or get in anyone's face. :)

well to be fair, if said party doesn't either PM or use the damn pussy way and leave a negative rep - then there should be something like this TJ

Since it's your BB it's your rules - but enforcing secret vengence is something the dick and bush show would do -

TJ,

if x poster cites another user, but doesn't have the sack to talk to the offending poster - and then the mods take action - that would be 'secret' justice -

and how would i know if it's secret :)

The instances of mod intervention on this particular forum are few... and for the most part, it's readily apparent what a given poster did to "earn" a temporary... or sometimes permanent (thinking Mountainman here) ban. We're not looking to be overzealous in moderating any part of the Mane, but again, in the best interests of the Mane, some standards still have to be observed here despite the level of passion the political and religious topics can evoke.

You didn't address my point blue.

I thought I had... in that to my knowledge, no moderator intervention has occurred due to any kind of "secret justice". Any time I've acted in that capacity, it's been clear either on the board or behind the scenes (PM) to that poster why the action was taken/about to be taken. Unless the post was egregiously offensive (Mountainman), a poster is usually given at least one opportunity to adjust the post (or their attitude in general) prior to even a temp ban.

yes, but is the 'accuser' ever divulged if they don't contact the offending party first?

Blueflame

yes, but is the 'accuser' ever divulged if they don't contact the offending party first?

If a poster takes issue with something another poster says, then usually they do say something publicly on the board to indicate that they were offended before clicking the "report this post to a mod" button. Once a post has been reported, then the decision whether or not to divulge who reported it would be up to the discretion of the individual mod who was dealing with the situation.
