View Full Version : EA Sports may lose exclusive deal with NFL

Due to the current troubles with the NFLPA and the NFL EA's deal may become voided, and anti-trust rules could kick in. I know most people would be happy about that since EA has no competion and raised the price of the game. But If things don't get worked out the next edition of Madden may look more like the college game, with no names on the roster list.

would be worth it.
I mean its very unlikely to happen, just saying it'd be worth it.

I will try to post the link, but I read it awhile ago and it sounded like it might come to pass rather than not.

EA May Lose Exclusive NFL License
Even hardcore Madden gamers were disappointed to see EA get an exclusive license from the NFL because the deal made it impossible for anyone else to compete and consequently raised the price of the game. Now it is looking like EA may lose the license it gained last year due to problems between the league and the players association.
"The current problems in the NFL between the league and the players association might make the EA/NFL contract void. This is because if the union decertifies, then anti-trust rules will apply. If this happens, then EA is out of luck. Antitrust laws would be in effect and the contract would be voided," GamersReports has noted.
We will keep you posted as more develops on this story.

i'm pretty sure that this would just mean that EVERYONE could use players names instead of just EA.

No ****. The EA/NFL exclusivity contract is incredibly annoying. It's bad for everyone who likes NFL video games. I would laugh my ass off if this were to happen.

Its still fun with a few buddys but damn it is weak if i were not for the graphics i would still play 2k5
Well even if it does go up in smoke. Programers are busy on other projects. Trying to asemble, or even convert the other football game programers, into a NFL game may only produce a sub-par product.
I hated the Exclusive contracts that are now in effect.

Lets be serious here, the 2k games actually have what is called a "physics engine" and a "lighting engine." Madden just has a bunch of different colored maps and recorded animations = bad football.
Anyone and i mean Anyone that knows two sh*ts about football would love 2k NFL games, just give them a try. Most people who play madden are nerds and people who have never bother to follow football (no offense), either that or they never tried other games with any care.
I strongly urge people to try NFL 2k5, it is much better than any madden will ever be.
As for the exclusive contract, exclusive contracts are bad for anything, this is why capitalism rules and everything else sux LOL jp.

Easy there Willy. Not like us 360ers have much of a choice. :)

I still play my 2K5, I refuse to pay more for an inferior product in Madden. Don't get me wrong, I played several years of madden in the past, but 2K5 was , and still is, the pinnacle of NFL video gaming. The player models actually look human, move realistically, and you can actually count on the computer controlled players to be in the right spots at the right time. IT actually feels like a team game. As much as I want a CBA deal done, I will rejoice if 2K sports finds a way to make more NFL games.

tahts too bad ;D
i played it this year because i was FORCED to buy it.
I would rather play 2k, but i cant live without correct rosters.
I really hope they get something worked out, but if the 2k series is allowed back in, it may be worth it.

The 360 version was rushed out, so the console would have some "depth" when it came out. It is a shadw of what it will be next year. The current version is more like a $60 demo.

Well I have been playing Madden since it first came out on a console (Genesis) And it was the best Football game of it's time, I have stuck with it year in and out. A few years have dissappointed me, I have nothing against other football games, but I am used to Madden, I know the plays, I know the controls...like a second nature...I have tried Madden on X-Box and even the slight change of controller screws me up I don't play the same on X-Box as I do on PS2. That's the same with other games I am just more comfortable with Madden than learning another format. So don't call me a nerd or tell me that I know nothing about football, Nerds are guys that argue on the internet about why their game is better than another.

I actually did the same thing, I played 2K2, but everyone else was plaing Madden, so I played Madden 2003 and 04. When 2K5 came out before Madden 05 for less money I made the switch back and was never more pleased with a football game.
for the 2K5 players, you know you can edit the players, so if you are dedicated enough you can update the rosters yourself. I personally only update Denver

I played the 2K series when it FIRST came out on Dreamcast... i think the one that was really good was 2K2. Every madden up to and including 2002 i just did not like at all. I started playing madden again when 2003 came out and i learned to love it. As for ESPN 2K5, i didn't really give it a chance. I rented it once, and while the replays were a cool idea, and the graphics were a little better, i preferred the gameplay of madden, and probably always will.
The SINGLE reason i would hope that 2k series comes back is so that Madden has a reason to keep raising the bar every year instead of just making the same game with roster updates.

I'm totally cool with someone liking one game over the other. I just hate the fact that the consumer isn't allowed to choose which they prefer anymore. Even the most hardcore of Madden players have said that 06 is a dissapointment, I wouldn't expect too much improvement until they aren't the only product on the market.

Fantastic.. Uber-giant EA Sucks errr Sports will have one hell of a mess. Its like my gaming dreams come true.
Oh please Gods of gaming, let this happen and make them suffer for what they've done ;)
I hate running on Madden. It's annoying has hell to get hung up on a O-linemen on plays.
Also the review play option is weak. Theres now reviewing if a player stepped out of bounds and came back in to make a catch! Which I have done and had done against me.

madden is a game designed in the mid 90's which just keeps getting new features.
2k is a better design that is less refined, but even now plays better and has a much higher potential.

Good to see everyone sees quality for what it is. ESPN is superior in so many ways. I remember last year was the first year Madden bothered to make a legit bootleg/rollout play. ESPN has like nine variations.
I'll just say this: Madden is a cheezer arcady video game. 2K5 is a Pro Football simulator.

I'd play ESPN, but there are two problems.
Madden is the only PC football game (that changed this month, but Maximum Football is taking forever to hit the shelves).
ESPN's franchise mode sucks balls.

It's true that Madden's franchise mode is superior. However I mostly play for the game play so that tips the scales for me. Obviously if you're PC only your options are a little more limited to begin with.

What I would like to find is a PC emulator for the dreamcast and play NFL 2K2.

Tell me about it. Oh, and can I get a lineman to actually block for me? Just a thought.
