Am I missing something here. People keep mentioning him as a potential free agent target but unless his deal voids he's still under contract with the 49ers this upcoming season.

LB (#96)
Year: 2001

San Francisco 49ers
Round: 1

San Jose, CA
Position: 7

Salary History

2001 1000000.00
2002 350000.00
2003 375000.00
2004 455000.00
2005 3500000.00
2006 1350000.00

I realise ESPN had him down as a potential cut but the 49ers are $17m under the cap and would only save $1.3m if they released him.

Trade Chris Young for him, straight up

Also, with a weak market for free agents, many of the 49ers' potential free agents might consider re-signing with the team.

Defensive end Andre Carter and linebackers Julian Peterson and Derek Smith would become free agents if not re-signed today.

Where'd you get that from Popps? Cos that states he's a free agent but the NFLPA and ESPN dont concur.

I've read it in a few places. I think Carter had something in there that voided his deal.

Yeah i think his deal voided.

I would like to get a WR in the open market tho, and draft DL. But who knows, I wouoldnt mind guys like Abraham or Carter either.

As I wrote in another thread: Why is Carter such a big deal? I haven't heard boo about him except from guys hereon. Is he good, or what? Is he cheap? Why would the Broncos want to sign someone while they are still getting cap space? Is he better than anyone they could get in the draft?

he's Courtney Brown all over again, people don't remember it real well bt Shanny had an endless woody for AC when he came out & he was considered potentially a franchise pass rusher(though undersized)

so this is basically a "we missed out on him then but we'll get him now" situation where he could finally live up to his potential in Denver

Depends on your definition of project ;D

He was a top 7 draft pick in 2001. He has good pass rushing skills, but not like Abraham. Once a player is a FA, good teams make them look better than the poor teams they previously played for and vice versa, ie the Browncos of last year. Carter might be a good upgrade at RDE. That is what teams look at. Is this guy an upgrade and is it a significant upgrade to pay them?

if our DT's can clog it up a bit Carter would be a fiend sack artist

but i just don't know how much $ he'll command in FA
