San Diego police arrested a 29-year-old man for allegedly posing as Braxton, romancing an unsuspecting woman and buying rounds of drinks for strangers in a hotel bar.

Police said Rodney Johnson of Ohio, using a stolen credit card number, checked into a room at the Hyatt Regency La Jolla, where the Broncos are staying during Super Bowl week.

Johnson's alleged scam was discovered on Tuesday morning when the woman called Braxton to thank him for the night of champagne and courtship. Braxton told the woman he "didn't know what she was talking about" and notified Broncos' security chief Bill Malone, police said.

NFL and hotel security joined police in investigating the report and, using the man's room number given by the duped woman, arrested Johnson on Tuesday. He was taken into custody at the hotel on suspicion of charging about $3,000 with a stolen credit card number.

"It was just a guy impersonating Tyrone," Broncos coach Mike Shanahan said Thursday. "Tyrone came to me in the morning and said, 'Coach, I had this girl call me about 7:45, and she told me what a great time she had the night before.' He said, 'Coach, I swear I was in my room.' I said, 'Yeah, that's your story and you're sticking to it.'

"But that's when we called security. It wasn't long before we caught the guy. These things do exist."

Braxton was informed of the scam by assistant coach Rick Smith. "He's been calling me Rodney," Braxton said.

Informed that the impostor was using a stolen credit card, Braxton said, "That ain't all he was doing, from what I hear."

Where in the world is Mark Macon? -- Adam Peek, Fort Collins

Adam - I figured that instead of answering the question myself, I'd get it from the horse's mouth. I e-mailed him at Temple, where he now works as an assistant coach and still ranks as the school's all-time leading scorer. For those with shorter memories, the Nuggets selected Macon eighth overall in 1991. He spent two-plus seasons in Denver before being traded to Detroit. He wrote: "My life is just what it supposed to be. Being that I am an assistant coach at Temple U. for the men's b-ball team, that pretty much takes hold of my life. Still enjoying b-ball - the teaching aspect of it as well as being a student under a Hall of Fame coach in John Chaney."
