I don't necessarily agree with what he's saying, but that's not even close to his point. The point is that the winter games feature almost exlusively sports that are restricted to fairly affluent people, and hence not very many african americans are involved. There is some truth to that, though the point relates more to wealth than race, because you could just as easily note that there are not many poor whites who have illustrious careers as skiers or figure skaters.

And another thing: that girl is so hot I don't know how anyone could help but respect the guy.

While amusing, I really didn't see what was bad about the quote. As far as the race angle, I think he outed himself in limiting to "black" or african american, whatever term he used. It's true that the winter games are sports that are predominately played by whites, and whites comprise a minority of the people on this planet, so advertising the participants as the greatest athletes in the world is pretty bogus.

I was gonna say something about Spike Lee (positive) but I looked at his filmography and realized I hadn't seen anything since clokers from 1995, so I'll do what Gumball should'a done.

ps, and the greeks really did compete in the nude, as marriage track women were supposed to be virgins, unmarried men did gay stuff (going greek), and women didn't attend the games.

League fee: $1,200
Extra Lessons & Camps: $500
Helmet: $60.
Pads: $170.

Equipment Bag: $30
Pants (Padded): $60
Stick: $10 - $20 depending on quality, and average lifetime was 3 games, so he went through an average of 6 per season - - round it off to $90.
Tape, wax, mouthguard, and miscellaneous stuff: $30.
Jersey: $30

Subtotal: $2,300

Copayment fees for medical treatments & league insurance fees (slashes, stitches, concussions, broken wrist): average of $100 per year.

Gasoline (trips to rink for practice, 25 miles away, and to games at various places in the State): average: $600 per season.

So it came to about $3000 per season.

He was able to use the same pads & skates a couple years in a row, but that would be offset by fees for special tournaments and the like.

Keep in mind that in Canada, the ice fees are probably a lot less. Kids can also go out & play pond hockey & find pickup games whenever they want. Extended ice time still costs a fortune in most US cities & suburbs.

What it leaves Bryant is a place like HBO where success is not defined by ratings. Gumbel's rants eventually got him moved off NBC's "The Today Show". Then CBS tries to start their own morning show with him. It bombed. Then CBS tried some other vehicle for him and it bombed too. Gumbel is irrelevant and that's why he has to do sports now for HBO which cares only about being provocative, not about attracting an audience.

Gumbel is essentially Spike Lee minus the talent. Or Scoop Jackson minus the ghetto smack. There is one huge difference between Gumbel and Limbaugh. Limbaugh attracts advertisers. There's 600 stations daily out there proving that he can move a product. If people didn't want to listen to him, there's no way he'd be all over the AM dial.

What's funny is that Katie Couric must see Gumbel as the road to success because she's about to jump to CBS and follow the same descent into irrelevancy.
