VALPARAISO, Indiana (AP) -- A house estimated to be worth $121,900 was erroneously valued at $400 million.

Now officials say the glitch has resulted in budget shortfalls, and could lead to possible layoffs in municipalities and school districts...

...

County Treasurer Jim Murphy said the home usually carried about $1,500 in property taxes; this year, the owner was billed $8 million.

I'm sorry, but

Im not familur with the way that state works but just to get the record straight thats not the Treasurers fault the valuation process is the assessor's job.

Can you imagine getting an $8 million property tax bill on a little 2-bedroom house?

I'll bet you that words were said.

You are correct! I didn't pay attention to the title of who made the mistake... It definitely would be the tax assessor that screwed that one up! But, you'd think that someone would have double checked that prior to budgets being set. A smart office would make a double check on any property that lends itself to be a large percentage of income for the county. Any property with a significant value should always be double checked!
